International Programs at Washington State University

I think that one of the advantages of being
in a college town is that you really feel more integrated to the university culture. I think its a good chance to meet a lot of different people from different parts of the world. Coming to the United States, especially here in Pullman is probably the best thing I ever did. WSU is something that really expands your horizons and also your perspectives. I think the decision to come to WSU for any international student should be quite easy. I’m the Vice President for International Programs at Washington State University. I came to
WSU in 1983 from Pakistan, and I literally had absolutely nothing in my pocket except one semester’s worth of tuition. Washington State University not only gave
me the opportunity to get a Ph.D in Agricultural Economics, the university supported me in every possible way. This is a place that welcomes international students. Their presence is a great way of understanding what the rest of the world is all about. So my mom is the main supporter of my coming to WSU. Hi, I’m Hui, from China and I’m a Sophomore this year. My major is Communications and German. Because my native language is
not English, I was worried about maybe I couldn’t catch up with other classmates. But all my professors are really great people, they help me a lot. What I would say to any student that wanted
to apply, they shouldn’t hesitate to do that if they are concerned about their English. My name is Dr. Kate Hellman, and I’m the Director of the Intensive American Language Center at Washington State University. This is a campus that’s very supportive of the international community. Not only do we have an excellent intensive American language center, but, we also have all of these supportive English language programs once students are on the ground. I’m a program assistant at the International Center. We have conversation tables where we have a volunteer come in and he will spend hours properly speaking English but not in the sense of straight out of a book. Kind of more, more just speaking with each other and more practice. When you come to Washington State University your degree is going to be worth as much as any of the best places from around the globe because we have colleges which are truly world class. We have almost 200 fields of study. We have colleges which are nationally recognized: Our College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Agriculture, Vet Med, Murrow School of Communication. The list goes on and on. WSU is in the top 100 universities in the
United States. My friends call me Jackson. I’m the former
President of The International Student Council. Besides study, we also have a lot of things to do. Develop your leadership. You develop your intercommunication skills. So, it’s really helping out growth as a person. It’s a very good university and you get to learn life, not just school. I’m from Oman, doing Mechanical Engineering. When I first got here, I was picturing the United States, as like a big New York. The image I had is what I saw on the criminal justice movies and series. But, after the very first day, I really loved
it. I feel very safe here. Everyone is very, very friendly, and just lovely. A student who is considering WSU can have an uniquely American experience in a small college town. Very quickly you don’t feel like a stranger here. You can follow your religion. You can follow your culture. And you can have a great environment. That you can come to WSU as an international student, and you can achieve anything that you put your heart and mind to. Come to WSU. Come to Washington State University. Come to WSU. You will be welcome here.
