Increasing Access to Top Colleges Through Free Advising

– I always knew that I wanted
to leave Florida for college when I was younger. I really wanted to step
outside of my comfort zone and just have a completely
different experience. I’m a first generation college student. My parents had never been
through the process at all. – My parents only got a
high school education. I knew I wanted to somehow
thank them, but also, I really just wanted to
make something of myself. I know that knowledge in this
world is what’s most important in taking you places. – It’s just been basically me and my mom for the past 18 years. Growing up in a low income household, it became really important
for me to go to a school where they gave me a full ride. I didn’t want that burden
of having to go to a school, knowing I was in debt, and
having to pay all that off. – My dad finished school and
had an enormous student debt, even though he worked through college. Junior year, they were like, “Alright, when you go to college, you need to find scholarships
because we can’t pay for it.” “Even if we only have
to pay $8,000 a year, we still can’t do it.” It was on my shoulders
entirely to find the payment. – I first learned about
CollegePoint from a phone call that I got shortly after taking my PSAT. – In May, I got a call from CollegePoint and they were like, “Hey,
do you wanna be part of this free service that
gives college advising?” – My CollegePoint advisor, Shannon, helped me throughout my
entire application process, filling out essays, and filling out financial aid information. – She helped me throughout
absolutely everything. She was there throughout
the financial process, actually applying, deciding
what school I should go to. – Having her call me on a regular basis and email me with information, like, “Oh, hey, FAFSA’s due soon,” or, “Hey, the CSS profile is due soon,” really helped me. – We had monthly calls where she would advise me on what I was doing and what I could be doing better, or, what I needed to be
doing to meet my goals. But, anytime that I needed
anything, I could just email her and she would reply almost instantly. – It gave me peace of mind
that I could go to someone with any question I had. – I know that the education
here is gonna prepare me for whatever I come across in life, and I wouldn’t be here today without the help of CollegePoint. – Attending a great school
gives you the most opportunities to do whatever you want. Thanks to CollegePoint, I could finally attend my dream school, the University of Michigan. I
couldn’t be here without you. – It always brings a smile to my face, and that moment where I realize that, “Wow, you got into Duke,
you did something.” – When I wake up, I feel really good knowing that I made it to this great place and now I’m going somewhere even greater. – My name is Michelle Katemauswa – Bryan Marin – Frosilda Pushani – Tom Dix – and I’m majoring in – Biology – OB-GYN – Computer Science – Biopsychology,
Cognition, and Neuroscience – Here at Claremont McKenna College – University of North Carolina Chapel Hill – Duke University – the University of Michigan – Thank you CollegePoint, this
wouldn’t have been possible without all of your help.
