Housing Tips for International Students – Part two

Hi, my name is Avni Adams and I’m the
International Transition Coordinator here at Conestoga College. Today, we are
going to talk about lots of things related to housing, specifically the
three options available to you as a student. Don’t forget to check out our
last video on housing, which is going to give you some top tips on how to search
for housing. So, your first option is to live on campus on Residence.
So, this is a great option for you students at the Cambridge and the Doon campuses because
it’s just within walking distance. So, you can walk to school, walk with your
friends, it’s very convenient. Your first step should be checking out the
Residence website because that has everything you need to know. It has
pictures of the rooms, it has the rates, the deadlines to pay your fees, and
contact information so you can talk directly to one of the amazing Residence
staff. There are two types of rooms available to you when you live on
Residence, one is the suite style and the other is open concept. They’re pretty
simple. When you live in a suite style room, that means you have your own
private room with a roommate sharing your kitchen and your bathroom. If you
live in an open concept, everything is shared – your room, your
kitchen, and your bathroom. Residence is a great chance to meet other students
from our college and Residence has Community Life Coordinators who plan fun
activities for you like community barbecues and movie nights. It’s such a
great way to get to know people from all over the world. How do you apply for residence? Simple! Just click on
the “Apply Now” button on their website Option number two is renting off-campus. This is a great way to get to know other
neighborhoods in Kitchener and Waterloo and live with other students. You can rent
from a private landlord and we have lots of tips on how to do that in our
previous housing video. So, renting off-campus
is definitely your cheapest option, because you get to split your costs
between you and other students and you might be able to live with some friends
as well. However, this may take a little bit of extra work on your part in terms
of searching for housing, searching for landlords, and making sure you do your research
before you get here to find a good neighborhood. Option number three is Homestay. We’ve partnered with Canada Homestay Network
to deliver you an amazing Homestay experience. With Homestay, you live with
a Canadian family. So, you have your own private bedroom but you share you meals and daily life experiences with your family. They may even take you on trips.
It’s a great way to practice your English, and to get to know what a
typical family experience is like in Canada. Homestay hosts are carefully
screened by Canada Homestay Network to make sure that this is a safe and
comfortable experience for you and your host family. If this is something that you’re interested in, go to the Canada Homestay Network website and apply online today. Today, we talked about the three options available to you when you come to study at Conestoga. That’s on-campus Residence, off-campus rentals, and Homestay. All of them are great. So, just think
about what works best for you and your needs. Whatever option you choose,
remember, the earlier you start the better. The more research you do the
better prepared you’re going to be for your time here. To find out more about
all of these options, don’t forget to visit our website as well as our YouTube
page for housing search tips.
