THE SEASON WILL ACTUALLY LAST. ERIN: NEW DWOMS IN WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE THE BIGGEST SHUT DOWN IN THE HISTORY OF HIGHER EDUCATION. ALL OF HERALD’S COLLEGES HAVE SHUT THEIR DOORS. THOUSANDS OF TEACHERS AND STUDENTS ARE IMPACTED. BRYNNE WHITTAKER SPOKE WITH SOME OF THEM TODAY. SHE IS LIVE IN SALINAS WITH MORE. BRYNNE: IT WAS A SAD DAY OUT HERE IN SALINAS. STUDENTS CAME TO SCHOOL HOPING TO GO TO CLASS AND THEN LEARNED THEY WOULDN’T BE GOING ANY LONGER. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, THE COLLEGE IS CLOSED. BRYNNE: 500 STUDENTS ARE OUT OF AN EDUCATION. SO AT THIS POINT, I’M LOST. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I’M KIND OF SCARED. I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. BRYNNE: CYNTHIA FIRST ENROLLED BECAUSE OF THE ACADEMIC SUPPORT THE SCHOOL OFFERED BUT NOW SHE IS FEELING ANYTHING BUT SUPPORTED. THEY MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS SUPPORTED AND I WAS GOING TO LEAVE HERE WITH A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE. I FEEL LIKE I DIDN’T MATTER. BRYNNE: THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SAID THEY WERE FINING THE PARENT COMPANY CORINTHIAN $30 MILLION. THE COMPANICY S ACCUSED OF USING INFLATED RATES TO USE STUDENT TOSS TAKE OUT EXPENSIVE LOANS. HE SAYS HE DENIES HIS SCHOOL MISLED STUDENTS. I BELIEVE THERE ARE FALSE ACCUSATIONS. KEEP IN MIND, THERE ARE NO HEARINGS, NO TRIAL, NOBODY IS ARRESTED. THESE ARE ACCUSATIONS. YOU KNOW, I HOPE THEY GET TO THE END OF IT. BRYNNE: NO MATTER WHAT HAPPEN TOUGHS THE COMPANY BEHIND THE DECISION, IT IS THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY LEFT WITH NO ANSWERS. I’M IN MY LAST TWO MONTHS OF GRADUATION. FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, I’M REALLY DISAPPOINTED. BRYNNE: THE US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IS EXPECTED TO HELP OUT SOME OF THESE STRANDED STUDENTS. THEY COULD EVEN BE FORGIVING SOME OF THEIR LOANS. ERIN: AS FOR TRANSFERRING COLLEGE CREDITS, THEY ARE
