HCS Superintendent – School Threats

HCS Superintendent – School Threats

For Horry County Schools, the safety and well-being
of our students and our staff are of utmost importance. Unfortunately, in the last few
weeks, we have had multiple instances where this value is being challenged. Horry County
Schools has been experiencing a growing problem with students making threats against schools,
other students, and staff members through verbal remarks, social media posts and/or
text messaging. These threats simply have to stop—and we are taking a firm stand to
stop them. Students who disrupt the learning environment by making threats will be subject
to an evidentiary hearing. This could lead to expulsion from school for at least 90 days
with a mandatory re-entry through the alternative school. Students: If you post, text, write on the
bathroom wall, or tell someone that you are going to shoot up a school or threaten to
cause harm to others, your comments, even those that are loosely made, will be dealt
with swiftly and strongly. Threats will not be tolerated. The spreading of malicious
information or perpetuating rumors either in school and/or on social media does not
help resolve an issue or a concern.  It makes matters worse. And those students who take
part in such activities to create a substantial and material disruption of our school campuses
need to understand that there will be consequences. To help explain the seriousness of making threats, we have teamed up with all of our
local law enforcement agencies and the Solicitor’s Office to create several announcements that
you will see throughout the school year both at school and on your local television stations.
We also want students to know the importance of telling an adult immediately if they see
or hear threatening comments made by others so that they can be investigated. In closing, I would like to share with you
one of the announcements that this team created and remind you that if you see suspicious
behavior… REPORT IT! – Don’t share it, spread it, or post it! Providing our students with a safe learning
environment is the top priority for Horry County Schools. Consequently, we will not
tolerate threats to our schools and will strive to make our classrooms safe from anyone attempting
to cause harm, disruption, or fear. Whether you make a threat through social media,
text, in person, or just joking around with friends, every threat will be taken seriously
and investigated by law enforcement. We will come to your home to seek the truth. We will question you, your family and friends. We will confiscate your cell phone and look
through it. We will be able to retrieve texts, posts,
images and videos that you think you have deleted. You could be expelled from school or even
arrested. If you hear or see something that could potentially
threaten the safety and security of our schools, please tell a parent, a school official, or
law enforcement. Remember, If you see something, say something.
