Graduate Level Apprenticeships

Graduate Level Apprenticeships

MAGGIE: Graduate Level Apprentices are students
who are studying for a degree but while they are doing that, they are also working in a
company, in this case, CGI. DAVID: Apprentices will typically spend one day a week at GCU
and four days a week at the employer’s workplace. MAGGIE: They are getting a massive amount
of work experience and then they can apply that to their academic learning. DAVID: All
apprentices are in employment and receive a salary during their studies. All their fees,
all their studies are paid for and the apprentices, therefore, don’t need to build up any debt.
PAUL: What we have found is that as they have compressed their study of a week into one
day, the feedback we are getting is that they are very focused. It’s a way of us creating
new opportunities in the marketplace to get people into what is an in-demand role. It’s
also allowed us helped us to define what the syllabus will be for a Graduate Level Apprentice
and that syllabus is not about making them CGI people, it’s about making them good quality
engineers. IAIN: It seems sensible to me that you would be better working in the area in
which you hope to practice in on graduation and there Graduate Level Apprenticeships are
perfect in this regard. So it’s a natural evolution of the way education is developing
in this country. DAVID (GLA): I found that when I did my first degree that I didn’t really
have the work experience. I had the educational experience so that was definitely a benefit
of this programme, that I could combine studying and then put it into practice at work. CHERYL:
You do feel as though you work harder because obviously it’s not learning something and
then four years later you’re going to use it in whatever career you do. You’re actually
putting it into practice straight after so it gives you the bit more motivation to do
it a lot better. DAVID(GLA): You still get the benefits of being a student but at the
same time you still feel a little bit more aware and a bit more mature because you are
at work as well. MAGGIE: CGI will absolutely continue to support the Graduate Level Apprenticeship
programme and it’s clearly not specific to IT but we would really encourage more organisations
to embark on this and take on Graduate Level Apprentices.
