>>FINALLY, WE’RE HERE.
I’M BRUCE HARRELD, AND I HAVE
THE HONOR AND PLEASURE OF
SERVING AS THE PRESIDENT OF
THIS WONDERFUL INSTITUTION. I’D LIKE TO TAKE A MOMENT TO WELCOME ALL OF YOU FOR COMING HERE.
TO THIS MOMENTUS AND VERY JOYOUS OCCASION.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS, SPECIAL
GUESTS, FACULTY AND STAFF COLLEAGUES, WELCOME INDEED.
THIS IS WHAT A LOT OF YOU HAVE
BEEN WAITING A LONG TIME TO
SEE, THE CULMINATION OF A
FANTASTIC JOURNEY AND YET THE
BEGINNING OF ANOTHER.
BEFORE I BEGIN, GRADUATES, LET
ME ALSO WELCOME YOU.
LET ME REMIND ALL OF YOU
SOMETHING I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW ALL TOO WELL, YOU DON’T GET
HERE ALONE.
A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM,
WATCHING, LISTENING, AND THOSE WHO COULDN’T MAKE IT, HAVE BEEN PULLING FOR YOU, PUSHING,
HELPING, AND IF YOU DON’T MIND, WOULD YOU JUST STAND FOR
A SECOND AND TURN AROUND,
THOSE OF YOU DOWN HERE, AND THOSE OF YOU HERE,
GRADUATES, JUST STAND UP AND APPLAUD
THOSE THAT HELPED GET YOU HERE.
[ APPLAUSE ] THANK YOU FOR INDULGING ME.
THIS DAY WILL BE A BLUR, BUT I
HOPE YOU REMEMBER JUST GETTING
UP FOR A LITTLE EXERCISE, AND
ALSO FOR WHAT IT SYMBOLIZED.
WE ALL NEED HELP.
ALL OF US NEED HELP. PAY THAT
BACK IN YOUR LIVE, YOU CAN SUPPORT
AND COACH AND MENTOR AND GIVE THEM THE
HELPING HAND AND HELPING MIND
AND HELPING HEART THAT I KNOW
YOU ALL HAVE. A WORLD RIGHT NOW NEEDS A LOT
MORE OF THAT IN MY OPINION.
THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH, DON’T
FORGET IT, LET’S ALL PAY IT BACK, THAT’S WHY
WE ARE HERE. YOU’RE EMBARKING ON SOMETHING
PRETTY SIGNIFICANT.
OUR DOCTORAL CANDIDATES, YOU’RE MOVING ON TO NEW PURSUITS, NEW CAREERS, OR YOUR
NEW EDUCATIONAL ENDEAVORS.
YOU SHOULD KNOW WE REALLY APPRECIATE AND THANK YOU FOR
THE YEARS YOU HAVE DEVOTED TO
GIVING YOUR BEST NOT ONLY TO
YOUR PROFESSIONAL AREAS, BUT
ALSO TO OUR UNIVERSITY.
YOU HAVE WORKED WITH YOUR MENTORS AND OTHER FACULTY
MEMBERS TO CONTRIBUTE SIGNIFICANTLY TO OUR
RESEARCH ENTERPRISE AS WELL AS YOUR OWN.
MANY OF YOU HAVE TAUGHT CLASSES HERE, NOT ONLY HONING
YOUR OWN TEACHING SKILLS BUT
ALSO CONTRIBUTING TO OUR STUDENTS’ EDUCATION WITH
FRESH PERSPECTIVE AND THE LATEST KNOWLEDGE.
AND YOU HAVE CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO OUR COMMUNITY-TO OUR
UNIVERSITY AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES BOTH-WHETHER IT BE IN GENEROUS
PUBLIC SERVICE AND ENGAGEMENT, IN SHARING
YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND CREATIVITY WITH OTHERS, OR IN
ANY OTHER WAY THAT YOU’VE ADDED TO THE VIBRANCY OF THIS VERY
SPECIAL PLACE. AS NEW DOCTORAL
GRADUATES, YOU ARE AT THE
FOREFRONT OF CHANGE. THIS IS A COMMENCEMENT, THE BEGINNING, AND IN MANY WAYS,
ALL OF YOU ARE AT THE
BEGINNING OF ANOTHER WAVE OF AMAZING CHANGE.
I BELIEVE WE ARE IN TIMES OF
VERY SWIFT CHANGE AND, IN
FACT, MAYBE OF ACCELERATION OF
THAT CHANGE IN YOUR OWN AREAS OF STUDY, PROFESSIONAL
ENDEAVORS, AND IN HIGHER
EDUCATION IN GENERAL.
I KNOW THAT THE INTELLECTUAL
GROWTH AND NEW PROFESSIONAL SKILLS YOU’VE DEVELOPED HERE
AT IOWA WILL HELP YOU DEAL
WITH AND ADAPT TO THAT
CHANGE. BUT ALSO I HOPE YOU EMBRACE IT.
CHANGE IS WHAT MAKES OUR WORLD
BETTER. A DIFFERENT PLACE IN THIS
WORLD THAN IN 1847 WHEN THIS
INSTITUTION WAS FOUNDED. AND THUS WE WILL BE DIFFERENT
NEXT YEAR. DRIVE AND EMBRACE THAT CHANGE, SEIZE IT, OWN IT ALL THE WHILE
HELPING THOSE THAT ARE STRUGGLING DEAL WITH IT.
WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL YOU’VE
BEEN LEADING THIS GREAT CHANGE TO A BETTER FUTURE BECAUSE
IT’S AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR WORLD.
NOW, I DON’T BELIEVE IN SAYING GOODBYE.
I BELIEVE IN SAYING SEE YOU
AROUND THE CORNER.
AND I HOPE ALL OF YOU REMEMBER YOUR WONDERFUL TIMES HERE AND
AS YOU LOOK BACK ON IT, YOU
REMEMBER ALL OF THE GREAT
EXPERIENCES. WHEN YOU COME BACK,
SOME THINGS WILL HAVE CHANGED, MUCH
WILL HAVE NOT.
THE VALUES, THE LOVE, THE KNOWLEDGE,
THE INTENSE ARGUING. THE ACTIVISM, THAT’S PART OF
THIS VIBRANT COMMUNITY, THAT’S
WHO WE ARE AND THAT’S NOW WHO YOU ARE.
COME BACK, SEE US, AND
PARTICIPATE IN MAKING US EVER
SO BETTER TOMORROW AND THE
NEXT DAY AND THE NEXT DAY.
CONGRATULATIONS, ALL THE
BEST. GO HAWKS!
