Glencore: Graduate Opportunities
To this day there hasn’t been a time when I’ve learnt so much so quickly. The great thing about the Graduate Program is that they really throw you in the deep end. If you’re like me, you probably prefer not to be micro-managed. I really appreciate that the program here allows me to work autonomously. The job can be demanding and the workload challenging but I’ve never looked back. I like working under a framework that lets me to do my job and trusts me to do my job. The work is always challenging but rewarding. You’ll find that there is definitely a very generous mentoring spirit here. One of the highlights for me has been the Graduate Masterclasses held by Glencore Coal Assets Australia. I think what I’ve enjoyed most about working for Glencore is that people that I get to work with and learn from every day. There is such a wealth of knowledge here you just have to soak it up. I always say to new graduates that I meet you’ve got to challenge yourself. Start and go hard! The graduates that work here are treated just like any other employee really. When you go to a meeting you don’t notice the difference between the graduates or the other engineers in the room. They just slip straight into that role and they’re treated as one of the team. It’s definitely a hard-working culture here. You’ve really got to be prepared to put in. The positive is you know you’re contributing. And people do notice it and appreciate it. If you bring the right attitude to the Program you can go anywhere within the Company. The sky is the limit. When I was in the Head Office in Switzerland, I realised that Glencore was much more than just a mining company. Glencore is a global Company with offices and locations all over the world. They’re a much larger mine to market business. It’s very much a culture where people who work hard and who benefit the Company get rewarded. And a good job is always recognised. I think this is a business that appeals to highly motivated people. I’ve absolutely loved it. It’s been the perfect Program for me and I feel like I’ve really grown so far in the short four months that I’ve been doing the Program. There is sink or swim moments. But there are always people around you to help you swim if you are starting to go under. Embrace the challenge and seek out mentoring opportunities from people around you, because they are your best resource. There really is a world full of opportunities. Great support along the way. It’s a really good Company to work for. We are quite close in the way we hang out. It’s kinda like we’re each other’s second family. There was lots of socialising on weekends including lunches and dinners. And a lot of my friends have gone on to be really successful within the Company. I’m really proud what they’ve been able to achieve. I would strongly encourage new graduates to consider Glencore as an employer. Glencore provides broad experiences, excellent mentor support and encourages graduates to learn about the whole business not just their discipline.
