GLEN OAKS GRADUATION VIDEO 2018
CBS television presents a special report on Sputnik One the Soviet space satellite. On the summer evenings of 1957, America scanned the skies to track the blinking orbit of the Russian Sputnik. From high above the tiny spacecraft sent a clear message. At the height of the Cold War, Russian technology had more than dazzled the heavens. It had challenged the American educational system to a winner-take-all race in science and technology. That chapter got us into the book because there was an immediacy about the need for higher education at that point. Communities, like St. Joseph County, were thinking about that kind of thing. We actually graduated in 1969 and it was wonderful for me to be able to go here and proceed and find out what I wanted to do. They provide you with everything you need here at Glen Oaks to carry on your education no matter where you decide to go. I am currently attending Western Michigan University. I would not be here if it wasn’t for Glen Oaks Community College preparing me. There was a general feeling for many of the people that graduated and came to school here and were successful as a result of it, that they would have never had the opportunity to do this, to go to college, if the college had not come to them. For me coming from a big city and there’s a lot of people and a lot of things to do, it was a good fit for me because, it kind of just calmed everything down and made me focus on the things that’s important. It was inspirational, really, to see these people come forward. In many instances older than we were. I had a woman in class who was 83 years old. She was one of the best students I’ve ever had and she told me one day after class she said, “I’ve waited all my life to do this.” For a small Community College what they have to offer here was a diamond in the rough for me. What I enjoyed the most about being here is just the community and just the closeness of like the faculty, the students and… just feeling like I’m a part of something. On June 13th 1969, Glen Oaks Community College held its first graduation and the dedication of its new building. Ninety five students received degrees or diplomas. There were twenty two Associates of Technology. Eleven Associates of Business. Forty three Associates of Arts. Eighteen Associates of Science and one Clerical Diploma. It was a remarkable two years. A time to be remembered.
