Everett Community College International Student Spotlight – Ka Ho Lai

My name is Ka Ho Lai and I’m an International
student from Hong Kong and I’m majoring in Mechanical Engineering. The reason why I came to the United States
to study is very simple, which is because the education system here is more diverse. The reason why I chose Everett Community College
is because…in comparison to university the classes at Everett Community College are smaller
so I can get more devoted attention from my instructors. Since I was young I love automobiles. I love to explore how they work and I want
to get deeper knowledge on cars and engineering and that kind of thing. I want to know more about them, that’s why
I chose this major. I’m planning to get into a four-year university
to get my Bachelor degree in engineering. Just as other International students, the
biggest challenge I faced was the language barrier. At the beginning I thought the native speakers
were speaking so fast and I couldn’t catch up with them. However, as time goes on, the language is
not a barrier for me anymore. By being a Student Ambassador I’ve found my
communication skills are much better than what I had before. During my free time I like to go to the gym
because the gym, they have a big basketball court and they have some equipment for me
to work out and a track. Also, there’s a library on the campus and
I normally use my free time to study by myself. The staff in the International office, whenever
I need help in regard to the visa or some documents, they are always there to help me
and so I don’t need to do everything and figure out everything by myself. The best experience I’ve had at EvCC was the
Everett Community College Foundation scholarship I got. To me it is not just financial aid, but it
is also recognition of the hard work that I have done at EvCC. Which makes me feel awesome!
