EC9 Karen Exploring Colleges Finding the Best Fit and Assessing Independent Living Skills

The biggest challenge, I think,
is finding the right fit. The student needs to
do their homework, and the family needs to
do their homework, to find out what level — what
developmental level the student is at. What college or campus
is a right fit for them? A big part of that
is academics, of course. But a much larger part is
their independent living skills. And by that, I mean,
more specifically, their skills on — life skills for setting alarms,
getting up, shutting gaming systems off, the ability to finish
their homework without someone standing over
their shoulder or without prompts. That’s a really big deal
at the college environment. No matter how smart you are,
you still won’t make it through if you don’t complete the work
and hand it in independently.
