Anthony: My dream definitely was
always to graduate college, because nobody in my family
had done it. My mom had me when she was 15, you know, so statistics show
that it’s going to be a struggle for me to be successful. At the time I couldn’t afford
to go to school, so I kind of just gave up
on my dreams of getting a college degree. When I heard about the Starbucks College Achievement Program, being able to pay for me
to go to college, my mind-set completely changed. I ended up enrolling for school
and going to ASU, and that was the point where my
whole life just turned around. I always wanted to go into
journalism and filmmaking, and I’m excited because
that’s what I’ve been studying. Do we need to get gas first? It was no question that I was
going to make the road trip to Arizona State and be on
campus for the graduation. I just knew that that was
going to be a memory that I had forever. I honestly don’t think
without Starbucks that I would have even gone back to school. Being able to have this degree, it definitely helped me, you know, knowing that I’m capable of anything that I set my mind to. Is there anything you want say to me before I start my new journey through life? Anthony’s mom:
Yeah, having you when I did, and everything that we go through together, like, I’m just really proud of you. I’m so proud to be your mom. I love you. Anthony: I love you too. Man: Anthony Vallesteros. [cheers and applause] Anthony: All the hard work
that I’ve put in and to finally be able
to accept that diploma definitely feels like
a sense of accomplishment. It’s been a long journey, and I’m glad that things
happened the way they did, because it shaped me as a person and it made me the person
I am today.
