I’m Mike Stull, director
of the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship at
Cal State, San Bernardino. Come to CSUSB! And we believe strongly here
at Cal State, San Bernardino in the College of Business
and Public Administration that we can teach people how
to be entrepreneurs and how to be entrepreneurial, no
matter what the context. Students studying
entrepreneurship have a really unique experience. Their academic program is
not about the classroom. It’s about learning
entrepreneurship firsthand. That involves lots of
experiential learning, creating new ventures,
working with local companies and helping them put
together business plans and marketing plans. It’s really an out-of-body
experience from the perspective that there’s classroom. The classroom is
the world at large. We’ve been recognized by
a variety of organizations for the great work
we’re doing here. Most notable is we’ve
been ranked number four in the country for
entrepreneurship programs by the Princeton Review
and Entrepreneur magazine. And the United States
Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship gave
us their highest honor, the national Excellence in Entrepreneurship
Education Award. The Garner Holt Fast Pitch
Competition is a really unique program. Students from around
campus can submit their idea for a business concept. The top 15 make a fast pitch,
a 90-second presentation of the business concept,
to a panel of investors, and it’s not just an
academic exercise. We’ve had students funded
by people in the audience, and I think that’s an
incredible thing to have happen. This is a serious endeavor. We’re going to have
a lot of fun. We’re going to work hard. And when the students
leave, they’re really going to understand what it takes to
be a successful entrepreneur.
