(upbeat pop music) – Does holistic review
mean that you can have great grades and great test scores that meet UMASS Amherst’s
typical academic profile and still not get in to UMASS Amherst? The answer is yes. It’s kind of unusual but
we’re really looking for is red flags, so reasons
why a student who might typically seem like a fit for the school, might not be a fit for the school. So that’s why we’re reading to see what your teachers say about you, what you reveal about yourself and your character in the essay. I think in my personal
experience, it’s kind of hard to mess up once you’re
already an academic fit, but it is possible. You know we have students who
may be a typical academic fit but there are other in their
profile that make us think that we’re not sure if the student’s a fit for the school, or
ultimately that we’re not sure that we can support that student in what they need to be successful. So even though it is possible that you could be an academic
fit for UMASS Amherst and still not be accepted, it goes the other way around as well. So you may be a student whose
GPA and whose test scores are a little bit under
what we are typically looking for academically, but again we’re not gonna just put
you in a rejection pile automatically just based on those numbers, it’s possible there may be something in your application
that’s telling us that you are a good fit for this school,
that you do have the tools to be successful in our
academic environment and that we feel that
you should be at UMASS despite not having
those typical academics. So that’s why the academics
are a starting point and the holistic review
helps us to supplement and really craft a class that’s
not just based on statistics but based on people and attributes that the students are gonna
bring to the classroom. (upbeat pop music)
