dedicated men and women who defend our country’s freedom and safety going to
school while deployed in a war zone or patrolling our waters or guarding our
territories is challenging to say the least but not enough to deter our
determined military students our military students are some of the most
determined and successful students there are they’re graduating at very high
rates the military program graduating class has $14 dick torian’s 155 honors
students and 817 have declared plans to transfer to a university 21 of our

one of the graduates just completed the degree program as a summa cum laude and
it’s now in the process of earning his graduate degree from the University of
Illinois Springfield congratulations our learning first
graduates you know coastline has a robust distance
learning program that serves students locally nationally and globally will the
students who are graduating and have taken classes at a distance or online
please stand thank you we know that they’re very disciplined
students many of our students are first and their families to go to college
which means that they have had to work harder in learning how to navigate the
often complex college environment their graduation today is a testament to their
will motivation and perseverance with the graduates who are first in their
families to go to college and now first in their families to complete college
please stand to be recognized few are great role models for your
families friends and the community and we are so proud of you our extended
opportunity programs and services serves and support students who are often first
under families to go to college and who have had to encounter academic as well
as financial challenges due to the dedicated support of AOPA staff
Gopa students learn to overcome their challenges and some of the most
successful in completing their academic goals
this afternoon 35 of our graduating class are yo PS students with our EOPS
graduating students please stand to be recognized finally I would like to highlight
another remarkable coastline program called acquired brain injury program
ABI assists men and women whose lives have been disrupted and in many ways
forever changed due to traumatic events this courageous students supported by
their loving families and the ABI faculty and staff are strong motivated
and champions for themselves the college and the brain injury survivors
everywhere this year there are 20 ABI program graduates three of them are here
today so please stand or wave when I call your name William Frey Robyn King
and Kelly Robinson thank you for coming to our graduates
your accomplishments are an inspiration to all of us you may have started only a
few semesters ago or years ago but you probably started with this day in mind
today when you would receive your diploma and be ready to move on to
tackle your next goal you inspire me to continue to be a better educational
leader you inspire your teachers to continue to excel in teaching and you
inspire our staff to continue to serve and guide other students to achieve
success in their lives you are also an inspiration to our Board of Trustees who
guide us and cheer us on to continue to do what we do well and to keep improving
and to remain focused on student success above all you’re an inspiration and a
powerful role model to a son or daughter a niece or a nephew a sister or a
brother a neighbor or friend through your own pursuit of education you have
demonstrated to them that education is valuable and by graduating today you’ve
shown them that it’s attainable if you move on to accomplish other goals other
dreams continue to believe in yourself and seek excellence as well as balance
peace and contentment in all that you do I also urge you to live the message that
Steve Jobs shared some years ago when he said your time is limited so don’t waste
it living someone else’s life don’t let the noise of others drown your opinions
and your inner voice and most importantly have the courage to follow
your heart and your intuition best wishes as you continue to pursue other
goals I look forward to seeing and hearing about the positive impact you
will make in this world congratulations good afternoon each year I have the
privilege of honoring our outstanding faculty and those that are recognized by
our Academic Senate for their excellence in teaching and this year we have three
of those faculty and I just briefly like to tell you a little bit about them the
first one is not able to join us today but I do want to recognize her
she’s our part-time faculty and shows she wins the Teaching Excellence Award
and that is Kate Stubblefield she started working at cosine in 2010 in our
intellectual disabilities program and she’s helped our students and create
programs for them so they can get hired and be in the workforce she teaches in
the art program with multiple mediums and techniques that she has learned
along the way she encourages creativity and she corporates the learning that she
learned every year from professional development into her class to keep it
fresh and new and at this time I’d like to honor Kate Stubblefield tonight able
join us today but I’d like to congratulate her on this award our next two recipients are full-time
faculty members so they get the honor of Teacher of the Year and I’m going to
start with Celeste Ryan and Celeste if you could please stand up and on behalf
of dr. Adrienne myself in our Dean we had some flowers for you from your Dean
and while dr. Tom Neal is bringing those to her let me tell you a little about
Celeste she works in our DSPs special programs and one of the themes that I
noticed this year from all of our recipients is access and equity and they
all work for that she helps them provide leadership for acquired brain injury
program helping students get into our Main Street programs and annually help
750 to 800 students along the way to state student centered is an
understatement for Celeste she is an advocate for our students and she vows
to help out in any way possible and help remove barriers for them and on that
Thank You Celeste for everything you do our other teacher of the year is Judy
Montagu Judy if you’ll stand up and dr. Emerson has some flowers again for you
on behalf of myself dr. Adrian and dr. Emerson I had numerous opportunities to
read through suggestions and comments from her students but the one theme that
I kept hearing over and over and over again is kind patient and friendly and
as I also said with Celeste very student-centered and an outstanding
advocate for students and help in again helping to remove those barriers so they
can get into employment or any their goals that they have set for themselves
and helping them achieve those and we thank you for everything you do Judy
thank you I hope at least I was here because I
can’t sing and you wouldn’t want me hear it anyway we are going to call back to
the podium ELISA Leona’s so will seeing the Beatles
in my life you Oh we made with lovers and place
can recall my bed the bodies Oh poor people they’re people about me and you poor people and things
people I thank you so much ELISA and by the way

would like to ask Ross Miyashiro to introduce our commencement speaker watch
your thoughts and they become words watch your words and they become actions
watch your actions and they become habits watch your habits and they become
character watch your character and it becomes your destiny Lao Zhu our
graduation speaker Lauren King has a character of a strong person a loving
person an educated person this did not happen by chance
Lauren King made it happen Carol Burnett once said only I can change in my life
no one can do it for me Lauren has done this Laura is a person who is a student
who is graduating a loving and caring mother a volunteer at a Senior Center an
active member of the EOPS program a single parent an honor student a live
your dream award honoree a multiple scholarship winner and overall
inspiration to her fellow students and women alike please welcome our student
co-sign college graduation speaker for 2017 Lauren King thank you so much for that warm
introduction good afternoon there is a famous quote
by Joyce Meyer that says if you want a different life you must view things
differently such a simple concept yet so difficult for many to grasp I’m going to
tell you a little about myself my experience at coastline and how we as
the graduating class of 2017 are high value again my name is Lauren King and
I’m graduating with an associate degree in paralegal studies with a long-term
goal of becoming an attorney I am a single mother of two beautiful daughters
ages 2 and 7 when I chose to raise my children on my own I had no money job
education or even permanent housing but I knew I wanted a different life and I
knew that could only be achieved through education when I first started at
coastline I was amazed at how warm friendly and helpful the Care GOP s and
financial aid staff were they quickly got me the resources I needed and I was
able to enroll in classes get child care services for my then newborn baby and
even assistance with housing but school hasn’t always been easy for me when I
first started I was 6 months pregnant with my second daughter I remember
taking a final 10 days after my c-section for those of you who know what
that feels like it was pretty difficult but I got a B my back
as a student in the paralegal program I have learned so much about our rights
the law and how valuable our lives are our world is desperately seeking
positives committed driven creative individuals and you as the graduating
class have earned that title you have put the blood sweat and tears into
improving your life and getting your degree you’ve sacrificed time with
friends and family you’ve lost countless hours of sleep
studying for exams and completing homework and did you know that anyone
can quit it doesn’t take any talent whatsoever to quit but it takes all the
talent time and determination to finish and for that you should be proud in
conclusion because you did do things differently you now have a different
life you now have a degree you have a golden ticket and it’s up to you how you
use it consider the words of Tony Robbins it is in the moment of our
decisions that our destiny is shaped you made the decision to go to school you
made the decision to commit and you made the decision to sacrifice you matter
your high value and you have an incredible purpose in this world
congratulations thank you for allowing me to speak and god bless every single
one of you I was thinking of those wonderful words
