BEFORE HIS ELECTION TO THE UNITED STATES SENATE, SENATOR SCOTT SERVED ON CHARLESTON COUNTY COUNCIL IN THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. PRIOR TO PUBLIC SERVICE, SENATOR SCOTT ALSO BUILT A SUCCESSFUL SMALL BUSINESS OF HIS OWN. HIS WEALTH OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE EXPERIENCE IS STRENGTHENED WITH A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE STEMMING FROM HIS C SENATOR SCOTT GREW UP IN A SINGLE PARENT HOME IN NORTH CHA HIS MOTHER A NURSE’S ASSISTANT WORKED 16-HOUR DAYS TO SUPPORT TIM AND HIS BROTHER. SHE WAS THE FIRST EXAMPLE OF SELFLESSNESS AND SACRIFICE THAT SENATOR SCOTT SAW AS A CHILD. A POWERFUL MENTOR DURING HIGH SCHOOL ALSO HELPED SCOTT LIFT HIMSELF FROM NEARLY FAILING HIG SCHOOL AND INSTILLED IN HIM THE LIFELONG LESSONS OF HARD WORK THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION AND THE ENDLESS SUPPLY OF INNOVATIO AVAILABLE IF ONLY YOU TAKE THE EFFORT TO SEEK IT. SENATOR SCOTT SAT IN YOUR VERY SHOES IN 1988 AS A GRADUATE OF CHARLESTON SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY ARMED WITH A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN POLITICAL SCIENCE – AND A BURNING DESIRE TO HELP ALL THOSE HE ENCOUNTERED. SENATOR SCOTT, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR STATE AND OUR NATION AND FOR TAKING THE TIME TO BE HERE TODA WE ARE HONORED TO HAVE YOU ADDRESS THE CLASS OF 2018.>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH. HOW MANY OF YOU ALL TODAY ARE AS EXCITED ABOUT CLEMSON’S FUTURE AS I AM? MUCH OF THAT SUCCESS LAYS ON THE SHOULDERS OF THE PRESIDENT WHO HAS DONE A FANTASTIC JOB OF COACHING US IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. LET’S GIVE HIM A HAND. TO THE PARENTS, THE LOVED ONES AND THE SUPPORTERS OF THESE GRADUATES, TO THE LUCKY ONES, YOUR KIDS ARE FINISHING IN ABOUT FOUR YEARS. THAT’S A GOOD THING. CONGRATULATIONS. ONE OF MY FRIENDS LOVED CLEMSON SO MUCH, IT TOOK HIM SEVEN AND A HALF YEARS TO GET A FOUR YEAR DEGREE. TO THOSE OF YOU, GOD BLESS YOU! GOD BLESS YOU! I’M A MOMMA’S BOY, SO LET ME JUST SAY TO THE MOTHERS OUT THERE, THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK, YOUR DEDICATION, YOUR SUPPORT OF THESE GRADUATES. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL MOMMAS OUT THERE TODAY. I DO WANT TO EXTEND A SPECIAL HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO THE MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER OF TAYLOR EVANS WHO COULD HAVE, SHOULD HAVE GRADUATED WITH YOU TODAY. BUT UNFORTUNATELY BECAUSE OF A CAR ACCIDENT, HE IS NOT HERE WITH US. I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF SPENDING JUST A FEW MINUTES THIS MORNING WITH THE FAMILY AND HAD A CHANCE TO PRAY WITH THE GRANDMOTHER AND THE MOTHER OF TAYLOR EVANS TO MRS. EVANS, WHEREVER YOU ARE IN HERE, MAY THE LORD CONTINUE TO SHINE HIS GRACE UPON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I ASK MYSELF, IF I WERE SITTING IN YOUR CHAIRS TODAY, WHAT WOULD I WANT? I WOULD WANT A VERY SHORT SPEECH. CAN A BROTHER GET AN AMEN? I THOUGHT SO. AND EVEN THE AUDIENCE SAYS, YEAH, BABY! I’M WITH YOU SO I WILL GIVE A VERY SHORT SPEECH FOR A POLITICIAN. ONLY ABOUT 45 MINUTES. YA’LL THOUGHT THAT WAS A JOKE? THIS IS GOOD. I ASK MYSELF, WHAT ADVICE WOULD I WANT TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL LIFE AND A LIFE OF SIGNIFICANCE, I WILL ONLY GIVE YOU THREE PIECES OF ADVICE. THE FIRST ONE IS THAT FAILURE IS NOT FINAL IF YOU REFUSE TO QUIT. THE SECOND ONE IS TO STAND UP FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES. AND NUMBER THREE, HOLD ON TIGHTLY TO THE DREAMS THAT INSPIRE YOU. LET’S START WITH NUMBER ONE. FAILURE IS NOT FINAL IF YOU REFUSE TO QUIT. THIS IS A LESSON I LEARNED EARLY IN LIFE AND I HAD TO LEARN THAT LESSON OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. MY FIRST BRUSH WITH FAILURE PERHAPS WAS AS JIM SAID AS A FRESHMEN IN HIGH SCHOOL I WAS NOT DOING VERY WELL. I WAS RAISED IN A SINGLE PARENT HOUSEHOLD AND DID NOT LOOK FORWARD TO A FUTURE AND HAD LOW EXPECTATIONS AND I LIVED DOWN TO MY EXPECTATIONS. I WAS BLESSED WITH TWO MAJOR BLESSINGS, MY MOTHER AND THAT MENTOR THAT JIM MENTIONED. I WILL SAY AS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL I FLUNKED OUT. I FAILED WORLD GEOGRAPHY. I MAY BE THE FIRST UNITED STATES SENATOR TO FAIL CIVICS, THE STUDY OF POLITICS. I WILL SAY, HOWEVER THAT AFTER SIX YEARS IN THE SENATE I AM NOT ALONE AT FAILING CIVICS. A WHOLE LOT OF US MUST HAVE FAILED CIVICS. I ALSO FAILED SPANISH AND ENGLISH. NOW WHEN YOU FAIL SPANISH AND ENGLISH, NO ONE CALLS YOU BILINGUAL. THEY ALL CALL YOU BI-INGANT. MY MOMMA USED TO WALK ME OUTSIDE AND LOOK AT THE SKY AND SAY SON, IF YOU SHOOT FOR THE MOON AND YOU MISS, YOU WILL BE AMONG THE STARS. NOW AFTER NOT LEARNING THAT LESSON THE 95th TIME SHE WALKED ME OUTSIDE TO A TREE. AND SHE INTRODUCED ME TO SOMETHING CALLED A SWITCH. NOW FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT FROM THE SOUTH, A SWITCH IS A LOVING APPARATUS OF ENCOURAGEMENT. SHE APPLIED IT FROM MY BELT TO MY ANKLES AND I WAS THOROUGHLY ENCOURAGED. I ALSO HAD THAT WONDERFUL MENTOR WHO NEVER QUIT ON ME. HE TAUGHT ME THAT ALL THINGS FOR ALL PEOPLE WAS POSSIBLE IN AMERICA IF YOU SIMPLY REFUSE TO QUIT. SECOND POINT, STAND UP FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES. I OFTENTIMES REMEMBER MY GOOD FRIEND MOLLY GREEN WHO WAS A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS OWNER. SHE SOLD HER COMPANY AND DECIDE TO DEDICATE THE REST OF HER LIFE TO PROVIDING CLEAN WATER IN AFRICA FOR THOSE WHO COULD NOT FIND CLEAN WATER. SHE STARTED WALTER MISSION — WATER MISSIONS INTERNATIONAL. THEN I REALIZED I DID NOT GO — NEED TO GO ANY FURTHER THAN TIGER NATION TO FIND SOMEONE WHO IS TAKING A STAND FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT STAND FOR THEMSELVES. ONE OF THE GRADUATES TODAY, RACHEL EDWARDS, WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER AS A YOUNG GIRL. HER LIFE EXPECTANCY WAS ONLY 16. AND TODAY SHE GRADUATES AS A PART OF TIGER NATION. BUT RACHEL HAS SPENT THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS ADVOCATING ON BEHALF OF KIDS WITH CANCER. I MET HER SEVERAL YEARS AGO WHEN SHE CAME TO CONGRESS ASKING FOR MORE MONEY AND MORE TIME FOR RESEARCH. I’M HAPPY TO SAY THAT BECAUSE OF THE EFFORTS OF RACHEL EDWARDS AND OTHER YOUNGSTERS JUST LIKE HER, WE HAVE SEEN IN JUST THIS PAST MARCH FINALLY THE SENATE PASSED A BILL TO FOCUS MORE TIME ON PEDIATRIC CANCER AND BECAUSE OF HER EFFORTS AND OTHERS JUST LIKE HER, WE SAW A $275 MILLION INCREASE IN CANCER RESEARCH. THANKS TO FOLKS JUST LIKE RACHEL EDWARDS BY STANDING UP FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES, OUR WORLD, OUR WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE. MY FINAL POINT. HOLD ON TO YOUR DREAMS. THE REALITY OF IT IS YOU GO THROUGH LIFE, LIFE GETS HARD. SOMETIMES THERE ARE CHALLENGES. BUT IF YOU WILL HOLD ON TO YOUR DREAMS, THE MOST AMAZING THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. I THINK ABOUT SOME OF THE GREAT DREAMERS. FOLKS LIKE OPRAH WINFREY, WALT DISNEY, ELVIS PRESLEY, AND THE FOUNDERS OF HOME DEPOT, AUTHOR BLANK AND — ARTHUR BLANK AND BERNIE MARCUS. THEY HAD TO OVERCOME DEFEAT AND DENIAL TO SEE THEIR DREAMS COME TRUE. OPRAH WAS FIRED FROM HER FIRST JOB IN TV BECAUSE THE PRODUCER OF A LOCAL STATION SAYS THAT YOU’RE SIMPLY NOT FIT FOR TV. OPRAH? ELVIS PRESLEY WAS TOLD, SERIOUSLY DUDE, KEEP YOUR DAY JOB. KEEP DRIVING THOSE TRUCKS BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SING AFTER BAND AFTER BAND TURNED HIM DOWN AND DIDN’T WANT HIS SOUND AS A PART OF THEIR BAND. YOU AIN’T NOTHING BUT A HOUND DOG ♪ YA’LL ARE TOO YOUNG TO KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. THOSE FOLKS MIGHT NOT KNOW. WALT DISNEY, HE WAS FIRED FROM A MEDIA JOB BECAUSE HE LACKED REWHY THETIVETY. , CREATIVITY. AND THE FOUNDERS WERE WORKING TOGETHER AT A HOME IMPROVEMENT STORE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA A PLACE CALLED HANDY DAN. THEY WERE FIRED BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT FIT FOR THE HOME IMPROVEMENT BUSINESS. NEXT THING THEY DID WAS GO OUT AND START THEIR OWN BUSINESS CALLED, HOME DEPOT. NOW JUST TO BRING ALL OF THIS TOGETHER, WHEN I WAS SITTING IN YOUR SEATS MANY YEARS AGO, THE MOST POPULAR SONG IN MY LIFE WAS A SONG CALLED HOLD ON TO YOUR DREAMS. I’M GOING TO SING THAT SONG TO YOU BECAUSE ONE OF THE DREAMS I HAVE BEEN HOLDING ON — IT AIN’T THAT FUNNY. ONE OF THE DREAMS I’VE BEEN HOLDING ON IS MAKING IT ON THE VOICE. SO, JIM, IF YOU WILL CUE THE MUSIC FOR ME. I’LL JUST SING IT SOLO. HOLD ON TO YOUR DREAM — THAT’S NOT GOOD SINGING. I WILL TELL YOU THE WORDS. I THANK THE THREE OF YOU ALL OVER HERE. YOU ARE CLAPPING BECAUSE I’M NOT SINGING. I’M SORRY. HOW — I THOUGHT THEY WERE SLAPPING FOR MY SINGING. THEY ARE CLAPPING I’M NOT SINGING. LET ME GIVE YOU THE WORDS. HOLD ON TO YOUR DREAMS. BELIEVE IN LOVE AND LET LOVE BE THE LIGHT TO SHOW THE WAY. BECAUSE LIFE IS GOING TO BE HARD AND SOMETIMES EVEN UNFAIR UNLESS YOU BELIEVE THAT SOMEONE CARES. SOMEONE WHO IS THERE RAIN OR SHINE SHARING YOUR DREAMS, YOUR HEART, AND YOUR MIND. GOD BLESS YOU. >>THANK YOU, SENATOR SCOTT, F THOSE VERY INSPIRING WORDS. HOW ABOUT ANOTHER ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR SENATOR TIM SCOTT? >>UNFORTUNATELY, ONE MEMBER OF YOUR GRADUATING CLASS HAS PASSE TODAY, THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN ANIMAL – AND – VETERINARY SCIENCE IS AWARDED POSTHUMOUSLY TO TAYLOR Q. EVANS WILL YOU PLEASE BOW YOUR HEADS AND OBSERVE A MOMENT OF SILENCE IN HIS MEMORY. THANK YOU.
