Classrooms in Crisis: Teachers leaving their jobs November 25, 2019 100 By Stanley Isaacs CategoryArticles BlogTagsclassrooms-in-crisis investigations local news 100 Comments Shannonbarnesdr1 says: August 20, 2019 at 3:53 am This mess is happening because these students many times have mental health issues and or disabilities, that are not being addressed, and this stuff didn’t happen much back in the day because these people were put in special needs school, alternative schools, mental health centers and facilities! This is the end result of "full inclusion and mainstreaming "Far too many students per classroom You got unstable unhappy homes, abusive family, to non existent families. It’s complex, but the majority is some level of mental health Reply A Viewer says: August 20, 2019 at 8:20 am Omg, this was my life for the last nine years! Resigning today! Parents aren't held responsible for their children's actions in schools2. Children that are disruptive remain in the classroom preventing the ones who want to be there from learning3. Teachers are not paid enough so there is no reason for teachers to stay4. The schools do not support their teachers; they take the side of the kid the majority of the time Reply M K says: October 12, 2019 at 4:43 am Parents don't teach their entitled kids to respect adults. Kid's have NO REASON to behave because there is NO CONSEQUENCES to their action's.Prison's will be FULL of these kids in a few year's! They truly believe The Rule's do NOT apply to them! Reply ClimateMarcher JohnJ says: November 15, 2019 at 2:00 pm Politicians don't want public education to succeed. The best thing for them is to fatten their stockholdings in the prison industry. The best thing for them is an ignorant AF voter base. The best thing for them is a kickback from a privatizer so they can lie about what they're doing. They're the "education senator," the "education representative" and "here's more tests for teachers to teach to!" (because that was a lucrative contract from a testing corporation that gave that handsome campaign contribution last quarter, oh boy!). The Koch brothers are smiling at every teacher that says, "I'm not in it for the money" because they are thinking, "Awesome! We'll make sure you get less and less until you don't get any because it ALL belongs to us anyway!" The narcissist loves a generous soul as a victim. Loves them to death, literally. That's why I left public teaching in Arizona. My first year teaching was the best paid, in the charter system (the vaulted privatizing system), but then it was cutback after cutback, and, "oh, we've got to bite the bullet, stick together as a team!" Blah, blah, blah, and the all time favorite platitude, "think outside the box people! (but, stick to the box, the test, the schedule…)" Okay. My cereal box is empty and I can't afford groceries this week but, "think outside the box" is what I'm supposed to do? Meanwhile, because that student represents a warm body in a seat and THAT represents money, there's no accountability on that student. .You can't kick them out for threatening the gay kid for instance because that's, "money out the door!" (actual quote, actual event). It's my fault they're getting into gang war fights, yeah that's it. It's my fault my curriculum isn't engaging or entertaining enough but "don't take away their cell phones! Oooh, their self esteem, they have to be able to call mommy on you!" Yeah, and here's another cut in pay… So, until we stand up for our kids, our teachers, their future, a real science curriculum, a real critical thinking component, etc… we'll get this shit from the decidedly DO NOTHING senators and politicians. But, that's okay too because we're the "overpaid babysitters" anyway and the parent needs to get to the shitty job they hate so, priorities. Reply Brandon Greenleaf says: November 15, 2019 at 5:39 pm When you have ghetto parents you spawn ghetto kids. Vicious cycle. Reply Joseph Rivera says: November 15, 2019 at 10:15 pm Part of the problem is the sue-happy lawyers just like when law enforcement kills a bad guy and are sued because the ghetto family wants a payday. If you shot at the cops and get killed, why does your family get a payday? The teachers who defend themselves against violence from students are FIRED for protecting themselves. My solution is install video cameras in the classrooms and hold troublemakers, who ever they are accountable. Fines, incarceration, what ever it takes. We live with it now, right? And if crimes are committed , the case goes to court as well. We need strong judges and parents to deal with these issues, not our instructor's problems, they are there to teach. Reply Natalie Rice says: November 20, 2019 at 9:29 pm More poverty = more mental illness = more addiction = more crime, = crazy, addicted, violent, or negligent adults, breeding more mentally ill, traumatized, violent children, & sending them to overpopulated, understaffed, underfunded, under-supported schools. It ALL starts with our greedy society as a whole, caring more about money & popularity than people & mental health. Our capitalistic society isn't sustainable. The rich getting richer & poor becoming poorer as prices sore & wages don't, is the perfect recipe for disaster we're seeing in our nation. Corporations literally own our entire gov, almost every politician has sold out to at least one. When people are left in poverty they get desperate, & when people get desperate, that's when addiction & crime rises. These kids are being raised not just in toxic, unjust homes, but a toxic, unjust society entirely & don't know how to cope. I mean, even adults can't, so how can we expect children to? That's what really needs to be addressed her, the root cause of it all, our society itself. Reply V Lightning says: November 21, 2019 at 8:04 am That’s what happens when parents fail to parent. Teachers are not parents and it’s not their job to parent your children. They are strictly for reading, writing, and math. When your child is being disruptive, it’s your problem not the teachers. The kids need parental supervision . Reply RVboy Junior says: November 21, 2019 at 1:52 pm These kind of things don't happen in China. Reply w reed says: November 22, 2019 at 11:23 am Now that women have ruined education they will leave the mess for men to clean up. But of course they wont leave the administrative level, without a rope and a winch. Reply max alberts says: November 22, 2019 at 4:16 pm It seems to me that most of these kids probably have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and that their futures are hopeless. They can't be taught anything because the part of their brains that retains memory and learning is dead. I once witnessed an almost unbelievable sight: I had been sleeping in the bedroom of my vintage apartment in a sketchy but yuppified neighborhood when outside my window I heard a loud disturbance on the street. I looked out the window and saw two extremely drunk Native Americans, a woman and a man, staggering down the street. Both were intoxicated beyond belief and the woman appeared to be about nine months pregnant. She slipped and fell flat on the ground and I heard her drunkenly yell to her companion, "You fucker! You broke my leg!" (It wasn't broken.) She got up and stumbled away with her boyfriend (or whoever he was) and I thought, man this appears to be a hopeless battle. Thank you, Federal Fuck Government for attempting to make extinct the beautiful First Worlders. You who are responsible for this attempt at extinction of an ancient and magical culture will receive a karma in this life that will make you wish you were dead–that I PROMISE you. Reply max alberts says: November 22, 2019 at 6:18 pm Parents need to send their decent kids to private schools. Both my son and I did so and we mixed with the creme de la creme of society. No trouble except for a little bit of drug dealing, for which I was glad because in a private elite school nobody ever gets arrested (or even reprimanded) for a little bit of dealing and I continue to love to use recreational prescription drugs. Both my son and I were offered full fellowships to grad schools after PRIVATE colleges (we received legacies from my parents–he went on to do music and I went to Canada and studied Creative Writing with a world famous writer on a FULL FELLOWSHIP.) That would NEVER have happened if I'd gone to public school. Just the thought of it makes me sick to my stomach. And it's NOT the kid's fault; they're brain damaged from FAS that their drunken mothers gave them by drinking during pregnancy, You definitely DO NOT find that at private school. We wore uniforms and had high status in our community. Everyone who is normal should attend an elite private school. And by normal i mean–well, you fill in the blank…. Reply Sunnydreamer1470 says: November 22, 2019 at 9:26 pm My daughter accepted a teaching position to a school where “diversity is our strength” was the motto. Soon in she was exhausted. Kids had absolutely no respect for educators or being educated. They hire more translators to interpret from English to Spanish that my daughter can’t even teach. She is so passionate about teaching but is burnt out after only 2 years and is ready to move on. The administration does not care whatsoever. It’s truly sad. Reply Nick Anderson says: November 22, 2019 at 9:57 pm The sad truth is that compared to the administrators and the parents, the kids are actually the best of the bunch. Reply none of your damn business says: November 23, 2019 at 3:30 am White teachers just cannot handle those COY-YOTE-TE pups. Reply kratz57x says: November 23, 2019 at 3:50 pm Right… "conversations". That's code for how can we get more money that the administrations can squander and the unions can shovel in their pockets. Schools are not mental health facilities. If a child has special needs and manageable behavior I have no problem with educating them and all that requires. If a child is ill disciplined, unruly, combative or dangerous, for ANY reason that's a parenting problem. Suspend the child and hold the parents (if you can find them) responsible. DO NOT let the child return until the behavioral problem is solved. The answer lies in parents. We already spend more per child for education than the majority of the world, and with each passing year get less quality education. This is NOT a poke at teachers (except for their blind obedience to the NEA), but how long do we keep shoveling more and more money at "education" with less and less in return? My only other question is… why am I expected to care more about these kids than their "parents" do? Reach up, grab your earlobes and pull down sharply. The loud "pop" you hear will be your head coming out of your a**. This is NOT a money problem, it's a problem of what the money they have is spent on. He has worked in High Schools, Middle Schools and Elementary teaching in IN, ND, NV, AZ and spent his final 28 yrs in SoCal. During all of my life I never heard my dad say anything negative about going to work or woth really any aspect of his job. Around 5 years or so ago I saw a difference in him and could sense things weren't the same. Than during the last 3 yrs he was vocal about his frustrations and I disappointment, hard to say though since my dad isn't a man that expresses anger or hatred. After he finally and very well deservingly retired this summer, did he let us know he had struggled in not quitting years earlier even though he was tempted so close too many times. He said that it wasn't just the lack of control and respect the younger generations of kids had anymore, the lack of any manners, the piss poor shitty parents, the lack of support and back up his administrators wouldn't provide to the teachers. Even with all of those negative things that were only accumulating over the years, it was the fact that he realized the bigger issue was becoming the fact that more and more children where coming into to school with even worse than ever before lower I.Q's. I don't like taking a punitive approach, but sometimes it is necessary. Also, I have a developmentally disabled student who also has serious behavioral problems. The two may or may not be connected, but certainly make for disastrous situations in the classroom. Multiple times per day, student learning is interrupted by this student having emotional outbursts – screaming, throwing chairs, etc. How can anyone learn in that environment? That student is only 1 of 5 in my class who have behavioral issues, which interrupt student learning. "Inclusion" policies can look great on paper, but can be disastrous in practice.
