Canadian Alumni Week for law students at the University of Kent
One of the highlights of the Canadian Law
Society is actually Canadian alumni week. This is where we invite a Canadian alum
to come over and give a talk to the students about their progress when they
went back to Canada. Then we have the negotiation competition
on the Tuesday and on the Wednesday we have the Justin Yuen Moot Competition. Now what the Law School does is they allow us to bring an alum who has graduated
from Kent Law School to come here and to just tell us about their experience and
how they made their way back to Canada and what they’re currently doing.
The Canadian moot is actually written by the alum that is coming, in their particular
area of expertise.
It’s just a great experience to get to learn how to
actually apply what we’re learning in class and have these real-life skills
that we’re going to need in the future and a really friendly environment. I am definitely excited to take part in
the Moot. I’ve got the opportunity to watch several moots here at Kent and
seeing how the nerves fly away as soon as the mooterss start is really exciting
to me so I’m excited to experience that for the first time.
Being back here and speaking as an alumni, as a graduate of the University and now a practicing
lawyer, it feels like you’ve kind of come full circle. I remember being back sitting there listening to an alumni talk and that but
to now be able to come here, speak with professors and that, but also have the
chance to speak and give knowledge back to students, it’s a great feeling. It’s
just been great to get back to a place to a school, and to a law school, that gave
so much to me before I became a lawyer. Alumni Week is absolutely a celebration
of Canadians at Kent it brings us all together because we all kind of
disappear throughout the year and you focus on our academics but then we get
together at the end of the year and support each other through the
competitions and the alumni talk.
Reflecting on the Moot, we
learned so much. Being able to focus on one specific area of law and just put
all of our energy into that one specific area we really took a lot away from it.
It was so nice to get some feedback on the amount of research we’ve done and
just have it finished and get the reaction from the judges and hear from
them and be challenged on our research it’s great. you
