2-SALLY:A BIG CHANGE FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN TEXAS. STARTING TODAY GUNS WILL BE ALLOWED ON CAMPUS- AS LONG AS THEY ARE CONCEALED.2-JOHN:WITH THE NEW POLICY COMES NEW SIGNS AT EVERY AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE CAMPUS, LETTING STUDENTS KNOW OF THE CHANGES ALICIA INNS IS LIVE AT THE HIGHLAND CAMPUS TO TELL US HOW POLICE ARE WORKING TO KEEP EVERYONE SAFE.ALICIA:THOSE NEW SIGNS JOHN — ARE POSTED INSIDE ALL OF THE BUILDINGS–THEY ARE BIG AND HARD TO MISS.SO THAT’S ONE CHANGE– BUT POLICE WHO PATROL THESE A-C-C CAMPUSES SAY SOME STUDENTS ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE OTHER CHANGES THEY’LL SEE TODAY… AND HAVE BEEN WORKIN G TO CALM THEIR FEARS!ACC’S CAMPUS CARRY TASK FORCE SPENT SEVERAL MONTHS HOLDING FORUMS, CONDUCTING SURVEYS, AND FIGURING OUT HOW THE NEW LAW WILL BE ENFORCED.PEOPLE WITH LICENSES TO CARRY WILL STILL HAVE SOME BOUNDARIES — GUNS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN TESTING SITES, SCIENCE LABS WITH CHEMICALS AND CHILD CARE AREAS. AND GUNS THAT ARE BROUGHT ONTO CAMPUS MUST BE KEPT IN A HOLSTER THAT COVERS THE TRIGGER, AND CANNOT BE STORED IN LOCKERS.SHAY STEWART, ACC STUDENT: “EVEN THOUGH IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE USED FOR PROTECTION, I DON’T FEEL SAFE AROUND GUNS PERSONALLY” RAVI GRAHAM, ACC STUDENT: “HONESTLY IN BETWEEN EVERY CLASS I SEE AT LEAST TWO COPS, SO I THINK THAT OTHER PEOPLE WITH THEIR WEAPONS ARE ONLY GONNA USE IT WHEN IT’S APPROPRIATE” THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN A LAW NOW AT PUBLIC COLLEGES STATEWIDE — BUT COMMUNITY COLLEGES WERE GIVEN AN EXTRA YEAR TO PREPARE. A-C-C POLICE SAY LESS THAN HALF OF THEIR STUDENTS ARE OVER AGE 21– AND ELIGIBLE FOR A CONCEALED CARRY LICENSE. ALICIA:STUDENTS SAY THE SCHOOL HAS SENT OUT EMAILS ABOUT THE LAW–AND PROFESSORS HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING THE CHANGES IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. POLICE HOPE THE COMBINED EFFORTS WILL MAKE FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION– AND KEEP STUDENTS FEELING SAFE. JOHN:TODAY ALSO MARKS A YEAR SINCE STATE UNIVERSITIES IMPLEMENTED THE LAW STATE LAWMAKERS PASSED IN 20-15.IT ALSO MAKRS 51 YEARS SINCE THE U-T TOWER SHOOTING.ON AUGUST FIRST, 1966- CHARLES WHITMAN TOOK SEVERAL GUNS TO THE TOP OF THE ICONIC TOWER AND STARTED SHOOTING.HE KILLED 14 PEOPLE.THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS PLANS TO REMEMBER THE VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS ON ITS SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS TODAY.A DOCUMENTARY FEATURING THE STORIES OF SURVIVORS TITLED “TOWER” WILL BE SHOWN TONIGHT AT THE BOB BULLOCK TEXAS STATE HISTORY MUSEUM.THE FILM STARTS
