Man: CAL. STATE SAN MARCOS
IS ONE OF THE NEWER CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY
CAMPUSES. IT’S LOCATED
IN NORTHERN SAN DIEGO COUNTY, AND IT’S ON WHAT USED TO BE
A CHICKEN RANCH. PRESENTLY,
WE HAVE 12,000 STUDENTS, AND WE’RE GROWING
TO 20,000 STUDENTS ONCE WE’RE AT FULL BUILD-OUT. WE’RE HERE IN THE STUDENT UNION,
WHICH IS A BRAND-NEW BUILDING THAT JUST OPENED UP
IN JANUARY 2013. IT IS A LEED GOLD BUILDING,
AND IT HAS A NUMBER OF SUSTAINABILITY FEATURES WHICH
WE’RE REALLY QUITE PROUD OF. WE’VE GOT A GREEN ROOF. WE HAVE PHOTOVOLTAICS
ON THE ROOF, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY,
IT’S THE BUILDING DESIGN WE HAVE WHICH MINIMIZES THE AMOUNT
OF ELECTRICITY NEEDED TO KEEP PEOPLE COMFORTABLE. ENERGY EFFICIENCY
IS DOING MORE WITH LESS AND DOING BETTER WITH LESS,
STARTING WITH MAKING SURE THAT THE CENTRAL PLANT
IS RUNNING AS EFFICIENTLY AS POSSIBLE SINCE THAT’S THE BIGGEST
ENERGY USER. ON THE OTHER HAND, BY PROVIDING
THE NEWER TECHNOLOGIES IN LIGHTING, WE’VE ACTUALLY
IMPROVED THE QUALITY OF LIGHT FOR THE STUDENTS
BECAUSE WE’VE LOOKED AT THE QUALITY,
AS OPPOSED TO THE QUANTITY. WE’RE PUTTING IN A FUEL CELL. EVENTUALLY, WE’LL BE PUTTING ON
MORE PHOTOVOLTAICS. WE’RE ALSO LOOKING AT TAKING
ALL OF OUR WASTE ON CAMPUS, CONVERTING IT HERE ON CAMPUS
TO ENERGY. WE ARE CONSTANTLY MONITORING
ALL OF OUR BUILDINGS, ALL OF OUR EQUIPMENT
TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE WORKING
TO MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY. WE’VE ACTUALLY REDUCED
OUR ELECTRICITY THIS YEAR BY 5% AND OUR NATURAL GAS BY 7%. I REALLY LOVE
THE CULTURE OF THE CAMPUS. I LOVE THE IDEA OF BEING ABLE
TO SAVE THE UNIVERSITY MONEY, IMPROVE THE QUALITY
OF THE LEARNING AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT HERE
BECAUSE I KNOW THAT WE’RE HAVING AN IMPACT
THAT’S REALLY POSITIVE.
