PERSPECTIVE WHILE INSTILLING ACCOUNTABILITY, RESPONSIBILITY,
LEADERSHIP AND PROFESSIONALISM AMONG ITS CORPS OF CADETS, CAL
MARITIME IS A SINGULAR PLACE. IT HAS EXACTING STANDARDS, HIGH
EXPECTATIONS FOR ITS STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF AND MORE THAN
7300 ALUMNI, A DISTINGUISHED GROUP OF MARITIME PROFESSIONALS
SO MANY OF YOU JOIN TODAY. IN FACT, I HAVE SEEN NOTHING
BUT EXCELLENCE FROM THIS INSTITUTION SINCE I WAS APPOINTED CHANCELLOR NEARLY 7
YEARS AGO. WITH ONE EXCEPTION.
IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY ON THE BAY, ABOUT A YEAR AGO AS I
REMEMBER. IN WHAT WAS CLEARLY A WEAK
MOMENT ON THE BRIDGE, MY THEN 8TH GRADE SON WAS SOMEHOW PERMITTED TO STAND WITH A CADET
AND PILOT THE GOALIE BEAR FOR A MILE OR TWO AS WE CLEARED THE
RICHMOND-SAN RAFAEL BRIDGE AND TURNED AT THE BUOY TOWARD
VALLEJO, ALL SURVIVED. OTHER THAN THIS UNCHARACTER
R*IS I CAN BREACH OF PROTOCOL, NOTHING BUT EXCELLENCE.
AND I THANK CAL MARITIME FOR A WONDERFUL MEMORY THAT MY SON
AND I WILL SHARE FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES.
GRADUATES, WE CELEBRATE YOU TODAY, YOUR INTELLECT, YOUR
CURIOSITY, YOUR DRIVE AND YOUR WILLINGNESS TO WRESTLE TO THE
GROUND ANY CHALLENGE THAT STOOD BETWEEN YOU AND THE DEGREE
YOU’RE ABOUT TO RECEIVE. WE ALSO CELEBRATE YOUR FACULTY
WHO DEEPENED YOUR KNOWLEDGE, EXPANDED YOUR HORIZONS, YOUR
COUNSELORS, ADVISORS, LIBRARIAN AND IS SUPPORT STAFF WHO
CREATED THIS ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR SUCCESS AND WE CELEBRATE THE FAMILIES, FRIENDS AND LOVED
ONES WHO SUPPORT AND BELIEVE IN YOU.
YOU ARE THE FUTURE LEADERS OF THE GLOBAL MARITIME PROFESSION
, BE BOLD, BE COURAGEOUS, HAVE AN APPETITE FOR ADVENTURE, LEAD
WITH A COMPASSIONATE HEART AND INSPIRE THOSE WHO FOLLOW YOU.
YOUR MANY FUTURE ACCOMPLISHMENTS WILL
UNDOUBTEDLY BE INFLUENCED BY WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED AND
EXPERIENCED ON THIS CAMPUS, I HOPE YOU’LL LACK BACK UPON
THESE EXPERIENCES OFTEN AND FONDLY AND THAT YOU REMAIN
ACTIVELY INVOLVED WITH THIS REMARKABLE PLACE SOON TO BE
YOUR ALMA MATER. SO, AGAIN, BEFORE I CLOSE, WITH
A FINAL THANKS FROM THE BOARD, LET ME GIVE YOU TWO PIECES OF
ADVICE, REMEMBER TO GLOSS THE TEETH YOU WISH TO KEEP AND YOUR
SUN SCREEN. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY

ALUMNI NETWORK, 3.7 MILLION AND COUNTING, WE ARE PROUD OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS AND WISH YOU EVERY
SUCCESS. CONGRATULATIONS.>>THANK YOU, CHANCELLOR WHITE.
WE WILL NOW HEAR FROM OUR STUDENT SPEAKERS, BOTH OF WHOM
WERE SELECTED BY THEIR PEERS TO DELIVER COMMENTS ON BEHALF OF
THE CLASS OF 2019, ONE REPRESENT THING GRADUATE
STUDENTS AND ONE REPRESENTING THE UNDERGRADUATE CADETS.
WE WILL BEGIN WITH MICHAEL WHITE WHO WILL DELIVER THE
GRADUATE STUDENT ADDRESS ON BEHALF OF THOSE RECEIVING THEIR
MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREES IN TRANSPORTATION AND ENGINEERING
MANAGEMENT. MR. WHITE, PLEASE COME TO THE
PODIUM. [APPLAUSE].>>THEY DON’T HAVE ME READY,
I’LL GO OFF MINE. GOOD AFTERNOON, FELLOW
GRADUATES, FACULTY, FAMILY AND FRIENDS, BH WH* THE QUESTION
WAS POSE TODAY THE GRADUATE COHORT ON OUR WILLINGNESS TO
SPEAK TODAY, MY INITIAL RESPONSE WAS NO, BUT AFTER
THINKING ABOUT WHAT CAL MARITIME HAS MEANT TO ME, I
QUICKLY ASKED PUT MY NAME BACK INTO THE HAT AND THANK THE
COMMITTEE FOR SELECTING ME TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF MY COHORT
AND ALL OF YOU FOR TAKE THING TIME TO LISTEN TO ME.
WHEN I THINK ABOUT CAL MARITIME, AND THE ACHIEVEMENTS
WITH HAVE ALL ACCOMPLISHED ONE WORD COMES TO MIND, IMPRESSIVE,
IMPRESS IS DEFINED AS EVOKING ADMIRATION THROUGH SIZE,
QUALITY OR SKILL, GRANT, IMPOSING OR AWESOME.
WHAT WE HAVE ALL ACCOMPLISHED IN OUR TIME HERE IN CAL
MARITIME TRULY IS IMPRESSIVE AND WE SHOULD BE EXTREMELY
PROUD OF OURSELVES. I CAME TO CAL MARITIME 18 YEARS
AGO AND THE CAMPUS LOOKED A LOT DIFFERENT BACK THEN.
THERE WERE THREE RESIDENCE HALLS, THERE WAS A MESS DECK,
BUD NA*R FIELD WAS GRASS, AND A GRADUATE PROGRAM WAS NOWHERE ON
THE RADAR. TODAY THERE ARE FIVE RESIDENCE
HALLS, AN ACTUAL DINING FACILITY AND TURF FIELD AND
SPORTS COMPLEX AND GRADUATE PROGRAM THAT IS TODAY
GRADUATING ITS 7 COHORT. CAL MARITIME HAS GONE THROUGH
AN IMPRESSIVE CHANGE SINCE MY TIME AS AN UNDERGRAND.
I FIND MYSELF NOT FULLY RECOGNIZING IT AS THE SAME
SCHOOL I ATTENDED. YET STILL FEELING AT HOME AS I
WALK AROUND THE CAMPUS. THROUGHOUT ALL THE CHANGE, CAL
MARITIME CONTINUES TO EQUIP ITS GRADUATEESS WITH EDUCATION
NEEDED TO BE LEADERS IN THEIR PROFESSIONAL CAREERS AND BEYOND.
TO THOSE EARNING THEIR BACHELOR’S DEGREE TODAY, CON GRAFP — CONGRATULATIONS.
14 YEARS AGO TODAY, I SAT IN YOUR SAME SEAT AND KNOW HOW
MUCH THIS DAY MEAN TOS YOU, YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR FAMILY. IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS YOU HAVE
GROWN UP, MADE GREAT FRIENDS, TRAVELED THE WORLD, PARTIED,
AND OH, AND STUDIED REALLY, REALLY HARD MOMS AND DADS.
THIS DAY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER,
REMEMBER WHERE YOU CAME FROM AND THOSE THAT HELPED YOU GET
HERE. I DON’T REALLY HAVE ANY
INSPIRATIONAL WORDS ABOUT HOW YOU YOU ARE IN YOUR FUTURE, AND
YOU WILL GO AS FAR AS YOU SET YOUR SETS, BUT IF I CAN OFFER
SOME WORDS OF ADVICE, AS YOU EMBARK ON YOUR JOURNEY, IT IS
TO MAKE SURE YOUR JOB OFFERS GOOD HEALTH BENEFIT AND IS
START SAVING YOUR RETIREMENT WITH FIRST PAYCHECK. BELIEVE ME, YOU WILL NOT REGRET
IT. TOO MY GRADUATE CO-COHORT, WE
DID IT, GOING BACK TO SCHOOL CANNOT BE DIFFICULT CHOICE TO
MAKE, AND WE WERE ALL CRAZY ENOUGH TO DO SO WHILE JUGGLING
CAREERS, FAMILY AND IS PERSONAL LIVES, WE CAME FROM ALL
DIFFERENT WALKS OF LIFE, A FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER FROM
DURHAM NC, A PROJECT MANAGER FROM SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, A
DYNAMIC POSITIONING OPERATOR FROM SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA,
A GREAT LAKES PILOT FROM DETROIT, MICHIGAN, AND AN
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR FROM MOCK PO* KOREA TO NAME A FEW.
ALTHOUGH WE CAME FROM VARIOUS PROFESSIONS, AGE AND IS TIMES
IN OUR LIVES WEBSINGER ALL SHARE THE COMMON GOAL TO
IMPROVER OURSELVES BOTH ACADEMICALLY AND
PROFESSIONALLY, I WILL NOT LIE T ROAD TO GET HERE TODAY WAS
ROUGH T LONG READING ASSIGNMENTS, THE LATE NIGHTS OF
WORKING ON AN ASSIGNMENT ONCE THE KIDS HAD GONE TO BED, THE LAST DITCH SCRAMBLE TO GET YOUR THREE DISCUSSION PONS POSTS IN
BY MID NIGHT, SUFND, WORKING IN A GROUP WITH PEOPLE YOU HAD NOT
MET UNTIL JUST YESTERDAY. IN CLOSING, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY
THANK YOU TO THE FAMILIES.>>THANK YOU, MR. WHITE. CADETS, ETHAN BEIGEL GRADUATING CUM LAUDE WITH A BACHELOR OF
SCIENCE DEGREE IN MARINE TRANSPORTATION WILL NOT SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THE CADETS, CLASS
OF 2019. CADET BEIGEL, WELCOME TO THE
PODIUM.>>HEY, GUYS, GIVE ME ONE
SECOND. ALRIGHT, HERE WE GO.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, ESTEEMED FACULTY AND STAFF, FELLOW
GRADUATES, IT TRULY IS AN HONOR AND A PRIVILEGE TO SPEAK ON
BEHALF OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY CLASS OF 2019.
[APPLAUSE]. AS I STAND HERE BEFORE YOU ALL,
I’M SO GLAD WE ALL CHOSE CAL MARITIME.
BEFORE I CAME HERE, I WAS A YOUNG MAN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT
WHAT TO DO WITH HIS LIFE, WHILE ALSO LEARNING HOW TO DO LAUNDRY
AND BUY NORMAL GROCERIES, PIZZA DOESN’T ALWAYS COUNT.
I PICKED UP WORK IN BOAT HOUSES, AROUND DOCKS, AND ON A
FERRY WHILE I ATTENDED COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
NO MAT EVERY WHAT, I ALWAYS FOUND MYSELF ON THE WATER, AND
I WAS USUALLY OPERATING BOATS. EVENTUALLY, I GOT REALLY GOOD
AT IT. I EVEN GOT A LITTLE CAPTAINS
LICENSE. THIS ALL DEVELOPED INTO A
PASSION I COULD NOT SHAKE. I KNEW I WANTED TO BE A CAPTAIN.
I FOUND OUT THAT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE I ATTENDED HAS A
PROFESSIONAL MARINER PROGRAM. THE CAPTAIN OF THE COURSE TOLD
ME ABOUT CAL MARITIME, AND I’M SO GRATEFUL FOR THAT.
IT CHANGED MY LIFE. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE DAYS
LEADING UP TO MY FIRST WEEK ON CAMPUS, I COULDN’T SLEEP, I WAS
WAY TOO EXCITED AND WAY TOO NERVOUS.
I CLOSELY SHAVED MY FACE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS.
IT WAS SCARY HOW HANDSOME I WAS WITHOUT A BEARD.
I THREW AWAY HALF OF MY BELONGINGS, I PACKED UP WHAT
WAS LEFT AND BEGAN THE LONG DRIVE TO CAMPUS.
ABOUT HALFWAY, I HAD TO STOP FOR GAS, I LOST TRACK OF MY
EXIT AND I GOT INTO A STANDOFF WITH A CAR THAT SPED UP AS I
ATTEMPTED TO MERGE. I MISSED THE TURN.
I CHANGED LANES AND WAS FORCED TO FOLLOW BEHIND THEM TO THE
NEXT ONE. WE BOTH ENDED UP TAKING THE
SAME EXIT AND STOPPED AT THE SAME GAS STATION. I GAVE THE MAN A STERN GLARE
FOR NOT LETTING ME IN FRONT OF HIM AND PROCEED TODAY THE
RESTROOM. THE MAN FOLLOWED ME AND WENT TO
THE OTHER STALL. BY THE WAY, THIS IS GOING
SOMEWHERE, I ASSURE YOU, HOLD ON.
I FILLED MY TANK, MADE IT TO CAMPUS AND PROCEEDED TO GET MY
UNIFORM FITTING DOWN. WHILE I WAS WAITING FOR MY
TURN, I LOOKED UP TO SEE THE SAME YOUNG MAN FROM THE GAS
STATION WALK INTO THE ROOM. TURNS OUT, HE WAS MY NEW
ROOMMATE. [LAUGHTER]. I’VE NEVER REALLY BEEN GOOD AT
FIRST IMPRESSIONS. BUT WE’VE LIVED TOGETHER FOR
ALMOST FOUR YEARS AND HE NOW WORKS AS A THIRD MATE FOR
OVERSEAS SHIPHOLDING GROUP. AT A BOY, I LOVE YOU.
I LOVE TELLING THIS STORY BECAUSE IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF AN ADVENTURE I DID NOT YET KNOW
THE MAGNITUDE AND REWARD OF. UPON ARRIVE, I IMMEDIATELY FELT
A SENSE OF PURPOSE. I FINALLY FELT LIKE I BELONGED
SOMEWHERE. I WASN’T JUDGED ON THE CLOTHES
I WORE, I WAS ACCEPTED BECAUSE OF MY CHARACTER.
YOU KNOW, I NEVER REALLY FIT IN DURING HIGH SCHOOL.
I WAS TOO DIFFERENT. HERE, DIFFERENT IS WELCOMED.
CAL MARITIME HELPED ME DEVELOP TRAITS I WOULD HAVE NEVER
THOUGHT OF BEFORE, ARRIVER 15 MINUTES EARLY TO AEN ANN
ENGAGEMENT, CREATE, EXECUTING AND PLOTTING VOYAGES ACROSS THE
PACIFIC OCEAN, MAKING MY BED EVERY MORNING, I’M STILL
WORKING ON THAT, MOM, I’LL GET THERE, DON’T WORRY, AND CALCULATE THING ZENITH DISTANCE
OF A CELESTIAL BODY, I STILL DON’T REALLY KNOW FWHA THAT MEANS ALSO, IT’S HERE WHERE I
LEARNED RESPONSIBILITY, STRUCTURE, ETHICS,
PROFESSIONALISM, CRITICAL THINKING AND TRUE FRIENDSHIP.
WANT TO REALLY GET TO KNOW YOUR CLASS.
GO TO A FRESHMAN CRUISE WHERE YOU’RE CRAMMED INTO A TINY
BERTHING WITH 15 OTHER GUYS. IT GOT PRETTY RIPE.
I SAW THE SAME PEOPLE AT LEAST 20 TIME AS DAY FOR TWO MOTHERS
STRAIGHT. I WAS PRETTY SICK OF YOU ALL AT
THE END, I’M NOT GOING TO LIE AND YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. BRIAN JACOBSON.
BUT I WOULDN’T TRADE THE EXPERIENCE OF SAILING AROUND
THE WORLD WITH YOU WHILE GROWING TOGETHER AS FUTURE
OFFICERS FOR ANYTHING. SHIPBOARD LIVING IS NOT FOR
EVERYONE, IT TAKES A SPECIAL TYPE OF BREED WITH A PINCH OF
CRAZY, BUT I’M SO PROUD TO BE STANDING WITH YOU ALL TODAY BECAUSE OF ALL THE MEMORIES WE
CREATED TOGETHER. RIGHT NOW, I CAN LOOK INTO THE
CROWD AND THINK FONDLY OF EXPERIENCES SHARED WITH SO MANY
OF YOU SUCH AS ISLAND HOPPING IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, CROSSING
THE PANAMA CANAL, EXPLORING NATURAL WATER SLIDES AND CAVE INS THE RAIN FORESTS OF.WETER
REEK KOE, SAILING ACROSS THE EQUATOR AND INTERNATIONAL DATE
LINE, SWIMMING IN A NATURAL POOL HIDDEN IN A GROELT TOE IN SA MOW YA AND CLIFF DIVING IN
SIGH PA*N.>>ON SENIOR CRUISE, WE SAILED TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC AND
ARRIVED IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS, A GROUP OF US TOOK A TAXI FROM HOIARA TO A A LITTLE VILLAGE
ALONGSIDE THE MATANIKAU RIVER. WHEN I SAY VILLAGE, I MEAN ACTUAL HUTS, WE MET WITH THE
CHIEF, PASCAL WHO ARRANGED A COUPLE OF GUIDES FOR US TO HIKE
ON HIS LANDS. WE TREKKED THROW THE GORGEOUS ROLLING HILLS OF GAD LA KANL AND BEGAN TO SCALE THE SIDE OF
A CANYON WALL USING VINES AND WHATEVER ELSE WE COULD GRAB.
ON THE WAY DOWN, A GROUP OF US WERE EXTORTED BY A NAIT i WOMAN
WIELDING A MA SHET TEE WHILE HOLDING HER BABY SON
ACCOMPANIED BY HER HUSBAND WHO HAD A DEAD BAUER HANGING OVER
HIS SHOULDERS. LOVELY PEOPLE, REALLY, WE STAY
IN TOUCH. ONCE WE REACHED THE BUTT TOM,
SWAM AROUND WATERFALL AND IS NATURAL POOLS IN THE HEART OF
THIS TROPICAL JUNGLE, THEN WE FLOATED A COUPLE OF HOURS DOWN
THE RIVER TO THE VILLAGE. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THIS IS
CAL MARITIME, NOT ONLY ARE WE HERE TO BECOME LEADERS, BUT
WE’RE HERE TO HAVE SOME MONEY. HOW MANY OTHER GRADUATES GIT TO
HAVE THE TR*IFL OF SAILING ON A TANKER THAT LOADS CRUDE OIL IN
VALDEZ, ALASKA. MY SHORE SIDE COLLEAGUES HAD
THEIR INDUSTRY COOPS AND INTERGNASH NAM EXPERIENCE, THEY TRAVELED TO SD*ES NATIONS SUCH
AS BULGARIA, GREECE, SPAIN, EPOCHAL, BRAZIL AND VIETNAM.
I AM SO FOND OF THIS SCHOOL BECAUSE ALMOST EVERY DAY I
LEARNED SOMETHING NEW THAT I CAN ACTUALLY USE, CLASS FOR US
ACROSS THE UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS IS GETTING BEHIND THE WEAL OF OUR T BOATS, OR TUG BOAT, ORGANIZE NATIONAL BEHAVIOR OR
LABOR RELATIONS, AUTOMATION, LEARNING HOW TO NAVIGATE BY THE
STAR, ADVANCED FIRE FISTING, WELDING, MANUFACTURING, STEERING SHIP INS THE SCHOOL’S
INCREDIBLE SIMULATOR, OCEAN POLL LICK, PLANT OPERATIONS AND
MOST IMPORTANTLY LEARNING TO WORK WITH AND TRUST YOUR
FELLOWSHIP MATES, NO OTHER SCHOOL DEVELOPS THE WORK ETHIC
AND RELATIONSHIPS THAT WE DO, AND HAS AS MUCH FUN DOING IT.
WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT THIS SCHOOL AND INDUSTRY, IS THAT I COULD
HAVE THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH ANY OF YOU OR SHARING AN
AWKWARD MOMENT IN A GAS STATION RESTROOM WITH YOU. WHETHER IT BE A DECK, ENANYONE
OR MPM. I HAVE TAKEN UP ENOUGH OF YOUR
TIME, BUT I WOULD LOVE TO THANK MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR
SUPPORTING ME ALL THESE YEARS TO BE IN THIS MOMENT RIGHT NOW.
MOM, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, I WOULD LOVE TO THANK MY FARTHER
WHO BLESS HIS SOUL IS NO LONGER WITH US, FOR INSTILLING THE
AMBITION OF ADVENTURE IN ME. THANK YOU, CAL MARITIME AND ALL
ITS FACULTY AND STAFF FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE ON PAM
KUS AND UNDERWAY. LASTLY, THANK YOU AND
CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2019. THIS IS OUR MOMENT, CHERISH IT,
EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU MADE OUR CLASS SO UNIQUE AND I’M
BLESSED TO HAVE SHARED THESE YEARS WITH YOU. MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU.>>WELL, THANK YOU, MICHAEL,
AND THANK YOU, ETHAN, AND MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU TOO.
I KNOW THAT I SPEAK FOR THE ENTIRE CAL MARITIME COMMUNITY
IN THANKING YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTFUL WORDS, YOU AO*F MADE
YOUR FAMILIES PROUD. IT IS NOW MY DISTINCT PLEASURE AND A HIGH HONOR TO PRESENT OUR
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER. MS. LISA LUTOFF-PERLO IS THE
PRESIDENT AND CEO OF CELEBRITY CRUISES, A POSITION SHE’S HELD SINCE DECEMBER, 2014. LISA OVERSEES A FLEET OF 13 SHIPS THAT SAILED OVER 300
PORTS ON 7 CONTINENTS WITH EACH SHIP’S CREW REPRESENTS OVER 60
DIVERSE NATIONALITIES AND CULTURES.
FOUR MORE CRUISE SHIPS ARE ON ORDER, EACH ONE WITH
GROUND-BREAKING INNOVATION THROUGH TECHNOLOGY ACROSS THE
CELEBRITY FLEET. LISA BRINGS BOTH BOLD VISION
AND FOCUSED STRATEGY TO HER ALREADY DYNAMIC AND
TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP AS THE HEAD OF ROYAL CARIBBEAN
CRUISES’ GLOBAL MARITIME ORGANIZATION, SHE IS FURTHER
RESPONSIBLE OF THAT CORPS’S 27 BILLION FLEET OF 51 SHIPS
MAKING SURE THEY RUN SAFELY, SMOOTHLY AND EFFICIENTLY FOR OVER 6 MILLION GUESTS PER YEAR. WORD HAS IT SHE MAKES IT LOOK
EASY. AN AVID CHAMPION FOR DIVERSITY,
INCLUSION, STEM EDUCATION AND CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN IN THE WORKFORCE, LISA IS
DRIVING SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE MARITIME PROFESSION,
POSITIVE CHANGE. HIRING CAL MARITIME ALUMNA KATE
MCCUE AS THE FIRST FEMALE AMERICAN CRUISE LINE CAPTAIN, A
CLEAR DEMONSTRATION. [APPLAUSE]. LISA’S COMMITMENT TO ADVANCING
GENERAL QUALITY IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY IS A POINT OF PROVIDE FOR ALL OF US.
SHE ENTHUSIASTICALLY LENDS HER LEADERSHIP TO MANY NRIL LAN
TLOP I CAN AND WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS AND HAS BEEN
HONORED WITH NUMEROUS AWARDS FOR HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO
STRENGTHENING THE MARITIME INDUSTRY.
PLEASE JOIN ME IN EXTENDING A WARM CAL MARITIME WELCOME TO PRESIDENT AND CEO OF CELEBRITY CRUISES, LISA LUTOFF-PERLO.
[APPLAUSE].>>HELLO, EVERYONE. I WISH YOU HAD THIS VIEW, IT’S
PRETTY AMAZING, SO GOOD AFTERNOON AND THANK YOU, CHANCELLOR, PRESIDENT, PROVOST,
FACULTY, ALUMNI, FAMILY, FRIENDS AND THE GRADUATES OF
THE CLASS OF 2019, IT IS MY PLEASURE TO BE HERE. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU.
[APPLAUSE]. YOU KNOW, IT’S REALLY A
HISTORIC DAY SO IT’S REALLY A SPECIAL, SPECIAL TIME FOR ME TO
BE HERE, IT’S A DAY OF FIRSTS. YOU KNOW, YOU WERE CELEBRATING
THE 90 ANNIVERSARY OF CAL MARITIME ACADEMY, THIS IS THE LARGEST GRADUATING CLASS EVER OF OVER 290 STUDENTS, AND
INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, I WAS HERE THREE YEARS AGO AND I
SPOKE ON THE WOMEN ON THE WATER CONFERENCE SO IT’S REALLY
WONDERFUL TO BE BACK HERE THREE YEARS LATER DOING THE
COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS WITH THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF WOMEN GRADUATING FROM CAL MARITIME
ACADEMY. [APPLAUSE]. CONGRATULATIONS. IT’S ALSO HISTORIC BECAUSE I’M
THE FIRST WOMAN EVER TO GIVE THE COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS HERE IN 90 YEAR SOS THAT’S PRETTY
COOL. [APPLAUSE].
>>I WILL TELL YOU TODAY I FEEL THE SAME WAY I DID A LITTLE
OVER 4 YEARS AGO WHEN I FOUND OUT I WAS GOING TO BE THE FIRST
PRESIDENT AND CEO APPOINTED NOT ONLY IN OUR COMPANY BUT IN THE
INDUSTRY. I REMEMBER THINKING, OKAY, I’M
THE FIRST BUT I CAN’T BE THE LAST, SO I CAN’T MESS THIS UP.
SO, IN THINKING ABOUT MY COMMENTS TODAY, I THOUGHT IT
ONLY APPROPRIATE TO START WITH THAT THEME, A THEME OF FIRSTS. MANY OF YOU IN THE GRADUATING
CLASS ARE EXPERIENCING FIRSTS, YOU MIGHT BE THE FIRST IN YOUR
FAMILY TO GO TO COLLEGE, YOU MIGHT BE THE FIRST GETTING YOUR
MASTER’S DEGREE, AND YOU MIGHT BE THE FIRST GOING INTO THE
MARITIME INDUSTRY. AND AS YOU BEGIN YOUR CAREER IN
THE NEXT CHAPTER, YOU MIGHT BE THE FIRST TO ACHIEVE SOMETHING NO ONE ELSE AT CAL MARITIME HAS
ACHIEVED. I WAS GOGGLING NOTABLE CAL
MARITIME ALUMNI JUST TO SEE WHO’S OUT THERE IN THE UNIVERSE AND I CAME UPON JAMILA
RINEHART, SHE”S A RECENT GRAD FROM CAL MARITIME AND A
LIEUTENANT IN THE U.S. NAVY, THAT’S NOT A FIRST, RIGHT, BUT
IN 2017, JAMILA WAS SELECTED FOR THE U.S. WORLD CUP R-R UGBY TEAM AND I GUARANTEE YOU THAT’S
A FIRST, GO JAMILA, SO I THOUGHT THAT WAS PRETTY
IMPRESSIVE UNTIL I READ FURTHER AND I FOUND OUT I WAS ON TWO OF
OUR SHIT SHIPESS CELEBRATING WOMEN’S DAY ON MARCH 8TH WITH OUR CREW AND OUR GUESTS
CELEBRATING THE AMASSMENT — ALL OF THE ADVANCEMENTS WOMEN
HAVE MADE, JAMILA WAS CELEBRATING AND SHOWING THE STRENGTH OF WOMEN BY BENCH PRESSING 455 POUNDS, SO JAMILA,
RESPECT, I HAVE SO MUCH RESPECT, OR YOU MIGHT BE LIKE
CAL MARITIME ACADEMY’S FIRST BILLIONAIRE, YEAH, I FOUND OUT
LAST NIGHT AT DINNER FROM PRESIDENT CROPPER THAT THERE IS
THE FIRST CAL MARITIME BILLIONAIRE, AND I COULDN’T
HELP BUT THINK TO MYSELF, WOW, I WONDER HOW THAT HAPPENED, AND
THEN PRESIDENT CROPPER TOLD ME THAT HE LIVE INS SEATTLE AND
THE REASON HE’S A BILLIONAIRE IS BECAUSE HE HAD TREMENDOUS
FORESIGHT AND VISION, HE’S OBVIOUSLY VERY SMART BECAUSE HE
GRADUATED FROM CAL MARITIME, RIGHT, AND HE’S INVESTED IN THE
CANNABIS BUSINESS. SO, THERE YOU GO. SO, I’M NOT ADVOCATING THAT, I
MEAN, IT’S LIKE A BUSINESS BIG, BUT LISTEN, I MEAN, IT’S PRETTY
IMPRESSIVE, SO YOU MIGHT INVENT SOMETHING AND HOPEFULLY YOU MIGHT CHANGE THE WORLD IN SOME
SMALL POSITIVE WAY, BUT ONE THING I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT
BEING FIRST AND MANY OF YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW THIS, IT TAKES COURAGE, COURAGE TO STEP UP, SPEAK OUT, LEAD, RAISE YOUR
HANDS, BEING FIRST MEANS STEPPING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT
ZONE, TAKING RISKS AND BELIEVING IN YOURSELF WHEN
SOMETIMES NO ONE ELSE DOES. I’VE EXPERIENCED A LOT OF
FIRSTS IN MY CAREER, I WAS THE FIRST HEAD OF HOTEL OPERATIONS
IN 2005, I WAS THE FIRST HEAD OF MARINE AND HOTEL OPERATIONS
IN 2012, I WAS THE FIRST PRESIDENT AND CEO IN 2014, AND I WAS THE FIRST TO HEAD A GLOBAL MARINE ORGANIZATION IN
OUR INDUSTRY IN 2016. ALL OF THESE FIRSTS WERE BASED
SOLELY ON THE FACT THAT I’M A WOMAN.
NONE OF THEM HAVE BEEN EASY, MOST OF THEM HAVE BEEN PRETTY
SCARY BUT I WOULDN’T TRADE ANY OF THEM. AND I WILL SAY TO YOU WHAT I SAID TO MYSELF EACH AND EVERY
TIME, GO FOR IT, DON’T EVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU YOU CAN’T,
PROVE THE NAY SAYERS WRONG, WORK HARD AND STAY HUMBLE.
I CAN’T THINK OF A MORE APPROPRIATE WAY TO CLOSE OUT MY COMMENTS ABOUT FIRSTS THAN BY INTRODUCING HER AND ASKING HER
TO STEP UP, ANOTHER FIRST, CAPTAIN KATE MCCUE.
[APPLAUSE]. PERHAPS YOU’VE HEARD OF KATE, PERHAPS YOU EVEN KNOW KATE,
SHE’S THE FIRST AMERICAN CAPTAIN OF A CRUISE SHIP.
SHE’S ALSO THE FIRST WOMAN TO EVER TAKE COMMAND OF A
CELEBRITY CRUISE SHIP, SHE WILL BE THE FIRST WOMAN TO BE THE CAPTAIN OF OUR BRAND NEW HIGHLY
ACCLAIMED CELEBRITY EDGE, KATE’S A ROCK STAR.
IF YOU GOOGLE NOTABLE CAL MARITIME ALUMNI, KATE COMES UP
AS NUMBER ONE. OUR CREW LOVES HER, OUR GUESTS
LOVE HER, WE LOVE HER, THE MEDIA LOVES HER AND I CAN TELL
BY THE REACTION SHE GETS EVERY TIME SHE COMES BACK TO HER
ALUMNI, YOU ALL LOVE HER. SHE’S A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF
BEING A FIRST, SHE’S LIVING HER DREAM, SHE’S MAKING A
DIFFERENCE, SHE’S A BEACON WHO SAYS THAT SAYING YOU CAN BE
ANYONE YOU WANT TO BE, APPOINTING KATE AS THE CAP PAIN
OF 2015 WITH A CATALYST FOR CELEBRITY TO BEGIN OUR
COMMITMENT TO GENDER EQUALITY. ON OUR BRIDGES, WE HAVE GONE FROM 3% WOMEN TO OVER 20% WOMEN.
ALL OF THIS LEADS ME TO MY THOUGHT NUMBER TWO FOR TODAY, KATE AND I ARE BOTH LIVING OUR
DREAMS. KATE HAD A PLAN, AT 12 YEARS
SOLD, SHE TOOK HER FIRST CRUISE WITH HER FAMILY AND FELL IN
LOVE WITH CRUISING SO SHE DECIDED SHE WANTED TO GROW UP
AND BE A CRUISE DIRECTOR. AND SHE SHARED THAT AMBITION WITH HER DAD AND I WILL BE
FOREVER GRATEFUL TO HER DAD BECAUSE HE TOLD HER, KATE, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT
INCLUDING DRIVING THE THING. SO, SHE MADE HER DECISION, SHE
HAD HER PLAN, SHE WORKED HER PLAN AND DRIVING THE THING SHE
IS, SHE’S LIVING HER DREAM. NOW, MY STORY ON THE OTHER HAND
IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. I LEFT COLLEGE NOT REALLY
KNOWING WHAT I WANTED TO DO. I WAS AN ACCOUNTING MAJOR, IT
WAS ONLY ONE THING I KNEW, I KNEW I DIDN’T WANT TO BE AN
ACCOUNTANT. NO OFFENSE TO ANY ACCOUNTANTS IN THE ROOM, IT JUST WASN’T ME,
SO I FLOUNDERED AND CHANGED JOBS FREQUENTLY. I CAME INTO THIS INDUSTRY 34
YEARS AGO BY ACCIDENT, FOUR YEARS INTO MY JOB WITH THIS
COMPANY, I FINALLY HAD A PLAN. I THOUGHT IT WAS A GREAT PLAN
UNTIL SOMEONE PULLED THE RUG OUT FROM UNDER ME AND DECIDED I SHOULD TAKE A DIFFERENT PATH.
SO, I REMEMBER THINKING NOW WHAT, THERE WERE THREE THINGS I
LEARNED FROM THAT FIRST EXPERIENCE, PLANS DON’T ALWAYS WORK OUT BUT YOU CAN’T GET
DERAILED, YOU HAVE TO STEP BACK FIVE YARDS AND PUNCH.
SOMETIMES A NEW PLAN IS BETTER THAN YOUR FIRST PLAN, SO DON’T
PRESSURE YOURSELF, BE FLEXIBLE, BE AGILE AND TRY NEW THINGS.
THE EDUCATION THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED AT CAL MARITIME
ACADEMY IS INVALUABLE. IT HAS LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR EVERYTHING THAT WILL COME NEXT,
IT’S PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR LIFE LONG JOURNEY T ROAD IS OFTEN
NOT STRAIGHT, YOU’LL COME UPON FORK, YOU SHOULD TAKE THEM, YOU
MIGHT FIND A TURN IN THE ROAD, EMBRACE THAT BECAUSE IT MAY
LEAD YOU SOMEWHERE YOU NEVER THOUGHT YOU COULD GO LIKE ME.
KATE ALWAYS KNEW SHE WANTED TO BE A CAPTAIN, I NEVER DREAMED I WOULD BE A CEO, BOTH ARE OKAY,
WHICH LEADS ME TO THOUGHT NUMBER THREE, AS YOU NAVIGATE, SORRY, I HAD TO USE A PUN, AS YOU NAVIGATE YOUR JOURNEY, YOU
ARE GOING TO UNDOUBTEDLY BE LEADING PEOPLE, BE LEADING
YOURSELVES AND BE LEADING YOUR CHILDREN, IT DOESN’T MATTER,
WE’RE ALL LEADERS. WITH LEADERSHIP COMES GREAT
RESPONSIBILITY, BEING A LEADER HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH EDUCATION
OR CONFIDENCE. I HAVE SEEN THE SMARTEST, MOST CONFIDENT PEOPLE BE THE WORST
LEADERS EVER. BEING THE LEADER MEANS BEING
SOMEONE OTHERS WANT TO FOLLOW, EMBRACE A SET OF VALUES THAT
WILL SET YOU APART, LEAD WITH YOUR HEART, NOT JUST YOUR HEAD,
INSPIRE OTHERS TO BE BETTER AND DO BETTER.
WALK THE TALK, FIND A WAY OR MAKE A WAY, BUILD A GREAT TEAM,
MAKE SURE THEY PLAY AS ONE, ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING AND
ONE OF MY FAVORITES, PAY IT FORWARD, TWO STATS I LEARNED
ABILITY CAL MARITIME ACADEMY I WANT TODAY SHARE WITH YOU IS
CAL MARITIME ACADEMY IS THE NUMBER ONE COLLEGE FOR RAISING
STUDENTS FOR THE BOTTOM 20% OF FAMILY INCOME TO THE TOP 20% ACCORDING TO A QUALITY OF
OPPORTUNITY PROJECTS. [APPLAUSE]. CAL MARITIME IS 20 ON THE
PUBLIC BOARD’S COLLEGES BASED ON ALUMNI EARNINGS, NOT BAD,
YOU HAVE A BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD OF YOU.
BOTH THOSE STATISTICS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PROVES THAT
YOU’RE GOING TO DO WELL, BUT AS YOU’RE ACCOMPLISHING GREAT
THINGS AND DOING WELL, ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BRING OTHERS ALONG
WITH YOU. THERE’S NO GREATER JOY THAN
HELPING OTHERS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS.
I’LL NEVER FORGET THE DAY I RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM CAPTAIN
KATE AND WHEN I OPENED IT, IT SAID HOW CAN I EVER THANK YOU
FOR MAKING MY DREAMS COME TRUE. IT IS OUR OBLIGATION AND OUR
RESPONSIBLE AND IT’S OUR OPPORTUNITY.
AND PART OF PAYING IT FORWARD IS GIVING IT BACK. HELPING THOSE IN NEED OF BEING
LIFTED UP, PRACTICING SELFLESSNESS AND LIVING YOUR
LIFE IN GRATITUDE. CHAMPIONING DIVERSITY AND
INCLUSION AND EQUALITY. I APPLAUD PRESIDENT CROPPER FOR
APPOINTING DR. INGRID WILLIAMS AS THE FIRST CHIEF DIVERSITY
OFFICER AT CAL MARITIME, YOU HAVE THE MOST DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATION OF ANY MARITIME
ACADEMY, CONGRATULATIONS. [APPLAUSE]. I’VE READ AND I’M SO IMPRESSED
BY YOUR CAL MARITIME STATEMENT ON RESPECT, DEFENDING AND
PROMOTING DIVERSITY. I WORK IN A VERY DIVERSE
INDUSTRY, AS PRESIDENT CROPPER SAID, THERE ARE OVER 70
COUNTRIES REPRESENTED ON OUR SHIPS, THEY COME ON THE SHIPS
AS STRANGERS AND THEY QUICKLY BECOME FAMILY AND THEY TAKE
CARE OF EACH OTHER AND THEY TAKE CARE OF OUR GUESTS.
I BELIEVE THE WORLD CAN LEARN A LOT FROM THE CRUISE INDUSTRY,
SO ALWAYS REMEMBER THE MANTRA I TRY TO LIVE BY EVERY DAY, LIFE
IS A BOOMERANG, WHAT YOU PUT OUT THERE IS GOING TO COME BACK
STRAIGHT AT YOU, SO IN CLOSING, IT’S BEEN SUCH AN HONOR TO BE
HERE WITH ALL OF YOU TODAY, COLLEGE CAMPUSES ARE MY
FAVORITE PLACES TO SPEND TIME. THEY’RE FULL OF YOUNG PEOPLE, SMART PEOPLE, PEOPLE FULL OF
OPTIMISM, JUST BEGINNING, YOU GIVE ME ENERGY AND YOU GIVE ME
HOPE AND SOME DAYS THINGS CAN GET A LITTLE HOPELESS.
YOU’RE OUR FUTURE, TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF YOUR BEGINNING,
AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, YOU JUST FINISHED THE EASY PART.
I KNOW, YOU DON’T BELIEVE ME RIGHT NOW BUT YOU’LL MRAO*EF ME.
WHEN I COME BACK NEXT TIME, YU EEL TELL ME I WAS RIGHT.
FIND YOUR PASSION, LIVE YOUR DREAMS, UNCOVER YOUR NORTH STAR
AND PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE
ALONG THE WAY BECAUSE WE NEED YOU NOW MORE THAN EVER. GOD’S SPEED, CONGRATULATIONS,
CLASS OF 2019, WE’RE HIRING AND THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE].>>WELL, THANK YOU, MS.
LUTOFF-PERLO, I KNOW THAT OUR CLASS OF 2019, THEY DON’T HAVE
EYE INS THE BACK OF THEIR HEAD, THERE ARE A LOT OF HEADS BACK
THERE DOING THIS AS YOU GAVE LIFE LESSONS, THE SO*U VERY
MUCH. THIS MORNING, COMMISSIONING SER MOAN YIS WERE HELD FOR THE
UNITED STATES NAVY, IN ALL, THERE WERE TEN INDIVIDUALS THAT
WERE COMMISSIONED INTO THE STRATEGIC SEALIFT OFFICER
COMMUNITY OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY RESERVE AND ONE INDIVIDUAL
WAS COMMISSIONED INTO ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE OF THE UNITED
STATES NAVY. ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE THE
GRADUATES WHO ARE NOW COMMISSIONED OFFICERS, PLEASE
STAND AND REMAIN STANDING, NICHOLAS BOWER.
[APPLAUSE]. MR. XAVIER BUSHNELL.
[APPLAUSE]. TYLLER BYROM.
[APPLAUSE]. DANE KRANTZ.
[APPLAUSE]. NICOLETTE LIPMAN.
[APPLAUSE]. JONATHAN LIPSKI.
[APPLAUSE]. SERGIO ROBLES.
>>[APPLAUSE]. RYAN SHEPODD.
[APPLAUSE]. SOLOMON SHIRE.
[APPLAUSE]. AND MATHIEU ZAMORA.
[APPLAUSE]. CONGRATULATIONS.
OKAY, THANK YOU. AT THIS TIME, I INVITE CAPTAIN
MATHEW WADLEIGH, THE U.S. COAST GUARD, DISTRICT 11, TO ADMINISTER THE OATH FOR OUR NEW
LICENSED OFFICERS.>>THANK YOU, PRESIDENT,
CHANCELLOR. AND PROVOST AND FACULTY.

OATH MEMORIZED, I’M GOING THE HAVE TO READ THE SCRIPT.

[APPLAUSE]. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
[LAUGHTER]. I LOOK FORWARD TO DOING THIS FOR ONE OF MY DAUGHTERS, I HAVE
A SIX YEAR-OLD SO A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO WE WERE OUT AT THE
COAST AND RUNNING FOR THE SURF DOWN IN WATSON VIEW, OLIVIA,
COME BACK HERE, I MAY WITH b COAST GUARD BUT I DON’T WANT TO
DO SEARCH AND RESCUE ON MY OWN DAUGHTER AND SHE SAID, DADDY T
OCEAN CALLS ME AND IF YOU SEE HER, THE OCEAN CALLED BUT IT
CALLS YOU ALL. YOU ALL HAVE ENDED UP AT CAL
MARITIME BECAUSE SOMETHING ABOUT THE WATER, SOMETHING
ABOUT THE OCEAN, THE SEA CALLS YOU SO THIS IS REALLY EXCITING. FEDERAL LAW REQUIRES ALL
RECIPIENTS OF THE MERCHANT MARINE OFFICERS LICENSE TO TAKE
AN OATH OR AFFIRMATION BEFORE A COAST GUARD OFFICER STATING
THAT THERE *F THEY WILL FAITHFULLY AND HONESTLY PERFORM
THE DUTIES. IF R THE GROUP THAT WILL BE
TAKING OATH TODAY, I KNOW THIS IS VERY SWEET BECAUSE YOU HAD
ALL STUDIED VERY HARD AND YOU WERE ALL PREPARED BACK IN
DECEMBER TO GO DOWN AND GET YOUR LICENSE IN THE FEDERAL
BUILDING BUT THE GOVERNMENT SHUT DOWN ON THAT AND YOU HAD TO WAIT UNTIL SPRING, SPRING BREAK WAS IT, SO YOU ARE
DEDICATED . I WILL NOW ASK THE GRADUATE WHO IS ARE RECEIVING THE MERCHANT MARINE LICENSES TO STAND .
[APPLAUSE]. YEAH, THIS IS AWESOME.
PLEASE RAISE YOUR RIGHT LAND AND REPEAT AFTER ME, I, STATE YOUR NAME, DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR AND AFFIRM THAT I WILL FAITHFULLY AND HONESTLY , ACCORDING TO TO MY BEST SKILL AND JUDGMENT, AND WITHOUT
CONCEALMENT OR RESERVATION, PERFORM ALL THE DUTIES REQUIRED OF ME BY THE LAWS OF THE UNITED
STATES. I WILL FAITHFULLY AND HONESTLY
CARRY OUT THE LAWFUL ORDERS OF MY SUPERIOR OFFICERS ABOARD A
VESSEL.>> ALRIGHT, THAT WAS A SEA OF
COMMITMENT. PLEASE BE SEATED. WE KNOW IT’S IN YOUR HEART,
TODAY WE’RE JUST VERBALIZING IT, WE’RE PROFESSING THAT IN
FRONT OF YOUR SHIPMATES AND YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR FAMILY AND
ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE HERE TODAY, SO CONGRATULATIONS.
AS DULY SWORN OFFICERS OF THE UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE,
I NOW CERTIFY THAT YOU ARE READY TO STAND WATCH ON
SEAGOING MERCHANT VESSELS. [APPLAUSE]. NOW, I CHARGE YOU TO CARRY OUT
YOUR DUTIES WITH INTEGRITY AND PROFESSIONALISM AND NEVER LOSE
SIGHT OF THE PUBLIC TRUST YOU HOLD WHEN ACTING UNDER THE
AUTHORITY OF YOUR LICENSE. I WISH YOU ALL THE SUCCESS,
FULFILLMENT AND HAPPINESS IN YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVORS, AND MAY
