A RECENT REPORT CRITICAL OF HOW
THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF
MARYLAND DEALT WITH CAMPUS
CONCERNS, LIKE THE DEATH OF A
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND FOOTBALL
PLAYER, HAS FORCED REGENTS TO DO A BETTER JOB OF BUILDING
RELATOINSHIPS WITH COLLEGE AND
UNIVERSITY LEADERS
>>OUR THOUGHTS WERE THAT BY
ASSIGNING REGENTS TO THE
CAMPUSES, THE CAMPUSES WOULD FEEL LIKE THEY’RE MORE A PART OF
THE SYSTEM AND THAT THEY HAVE A
REPRESENTATIVE WHO’S LISTENING. TIM THE BOARD OF REGENTS SAYS
: ITS GOAL OF HAVING CAMPUS
ASSIGNMENTS IS TO ALSO
UNDERSTAND INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL
NEEDS AND WANTS.>>THIS GIVES THEM A CHANCE TO
GET I THINK SOMEONE WHO KNOWS A
LOT MORE ABOUT THEM AND NOT
NECESSARILY ADVOCATE, WE DON’T
THEM ALL TO BECOME ADVOCATES,
BUT TO BE AN EXPERT OF WHAT’S GOING ON AT THE CAMPUS AND KNOW
WHAT THE NEEDS OF THAT CAMPUS
ARE. TIM BY LAW, THE BOARD OF REGENTS
: IS ADDING FOUR NEW MEMBERS,
AMONG THEM A NEW STUDENT
REPRESENTATIVE.>>THE EVOLVING NATURE OF WHAT A
STUDENT IS TODAY IS SO DIFFERENT
THAN WHT IT USED TO BE AND SO
HAVING MORE VOICES IS ALWAYS
HELPFUL. TIM THE BOARD WILL SPEND THE
: NEXT FEW MONTHS SEARCHING FOR
A NEW UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF
MARYLAND CHANCELLOR AS WELL AS
PRESIDENTS FOR COPPIN STATE AND
THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND COLLEGE PARK. ALL OF THE JOBS ARE EXPECTED TO
BE FILLED BY NEXT SPRI
