Bexar County Felony Drug Court Graduation

What’s happening today is that we’re
having a graduation for 32 the people that have gone through our felony drug
court program. Various parts of the program some are part of the
co-occurring disorder program, some are from the DWI program but various
different things. This is not the regular type of programming that you see in the
criminal justice system what we do here is to help people change their lives so
that they get out of the criminal justice system they take care of their
families and they have a chance to be successful rather than being arrested
over and over again it has a huge impact on the community these are folks who are
going to be committing crimes anymore they’ve got their lives together I don’t
look at them as criminals anyway they’re people with problems that can be
resolved but they do things that they wouldn’t normally do in order to support
their habit so that’s a big influence on the community at large and I have to say
Bexar County has really taken hold of this concept because we have many many
specialty courts at this point so we’re putting now hundreds of graduates every
year who are doing much better in life. It’s a huge blessing it’s a second
chance at life, second chance to be a mother again to my children I’m so
honored to be able to be in this program and I’m so proud of myself to finally
accomplish graduation and the whole support group here is amazing, I couldn’t
do it without any of them. I’m gonna go back to school and probably get my GED
and then go on to be a peer specialist or recovery coach so that way I can
help an advocate for other people that are in the same predicament
that I was in and help them with not only the addiction but the
mental illness too.
