my name is t’keyah Lattimore I am a
surgical technologist studying at Berklee College my work dead-end jobs
for about five years of my life from the mother so I just wanted to set a good
example for my children and going back to school and getting a career for
myself this one particularly I was off both jobs and I went home to clean my
house and I just had to accidentally hit my head and I’m gonna hit my head I went
to the ER and they found a tumor I went into or I was so nervous and I see
everyone setting up and clinking instruments around the nurse looks at me
to say are you okay I’m so nervous and then the search that looks back to me
she said honey we know what we’re doing it just felt like everything was gonna
be okay and I knew when I got out of that hospital that I wanted to be in the
medical field if you’re looking for a family based institution that really
believes in your dreams then this is the place for you take care of you the
individual actually become the professional that you sound to be I am
tequila Adam or an eye and the surgical technologist I’m Susan Sheldon and I graduated from
Berkeley way back in 1978 I had a very successful career however about two and
a half years ago the corporate merger left me without a job I reconnected with
Berkeley career services and learned about a great position in marketing and
sales at a fabulous firm I’m so happy to be back at work I’m living and working
through that Berkeley really does mean what they say about lifetime career
assistance they’ve really been there for me faculty/staff and an alumnus of Berkeley
College will be volunteering their time and expertise on a medical mission
organized by healing the children new jersey to Guayaquil Ecuador healing the
children provides critical medical care to children all around the world
Joseph Solomon chair of the surgical technology and surgical processing
programs at Berkeley College will be the trip administrator and will be
accompanied by alumnus Anna Campos and faculty members Nicole Willis and Anne
balligan George the students love it it motivates them it lets them be involved
in the process in a very quick time these people have no access to no access
to left palate repair no access to as simple as tonsillectomy something as
simple as that so making that difference in their life
is a huge thing for them because they just don’t have the money or can afford
or would not get that medical treatment in preparation for the trip Anna Campos
along with Berkeley College faculty and current students prepared sterilized and
packed medical instruments to be used in the over 40 surgeries scheduled at the
Guayaquil Children’s Hospital being able to travel out of the United States they
go to another country and help underprivileged people kids it’s a great
feeling and I have kids of my own so to be able to help them and so many things
to me Berkeley College faculty staff and student volunteers hope to continue
their involvement with healing the children New Jersey on future medical
missions and other charitable events to find out more visit Berkeley College edu
or HTC nj.com access to the top is part of what sets
the berkeley college fashion merchandising and management program
apart a perfect example is our recent event at the time center in manhattan
students were treated to an intimate evening with fashion designer and
founder of own New York city-based label Daniel Pacific who spoke about
opportunities for emerging designers and the process of launching his own brand
there’s a huge I think a huge desire and a drive to be interested in involved in
the design world and I think a program like this is phenomenal about inviting
people such as myself who can give hands-on experience to what’s happening
in today’s market at Berkeley inside industry events such as these combined
with hands-on learning from instructors with the wealth of professional
experience in all aspects of the fashion industry these types of events are
really important for students for a lot of reasons the first one is it gives
them an opportunity to really interact with professionals in the fashion
industry and to really hear what’s happening right here and right now and
obviously being in New York City that’s that’s an opportunity that that’s a
particular importance to any student that wants to be in the fashion industry
the second reason is to literally give the students an opportunity to rub
shoulders with people in the industry so this event is open to anyone in the
industry to come and and our hope is that they’ll be sitting next to somebody
who’s working in the industry and potentially strike up a conversation and
and and that obviously leads to the third thing which is you know to give
students an idea of what there is out there in the fashion industry in terms
of careers and opportunities there that access to top industry professionals
along with internships at leading area fashion firms helps to give fashion
students at Berkeley the experience and the practical skills to enter this
exciting career field you need someone to teach you the ropes like what can I
do to be where you are to learn more visit Berkeley College today grow up in a very tough neighborhood
high crime and then have people saying to me that hey you’re gonna be whatever
you want to be it was about survival and it was tough it was scary at times
but I knew that one day my reality would change one day I’ll be able to say I’m
leaving an education to me means opening the door out of poverty Berkeley College
means hope and a better future you
