Behind the Scenes of Graduation

Behind the Scenes of Graduation

(upbeat music) – My name is Liz King and I’m the Director of
Ceremonies and Events here at the University of British Columbia. Graduation is a very special
time and it brings up a lot of warm, fuzzy feelings. It’s a culmination of all of
the work of these students. This is our chance to celebrate with them, to congratulate them. We have a graduation operations committee and their role ranges
from working with students to working with our parking lots to printing degrees and
everything in between. The University degrees are
all printed here in house. And Enrolment Services puts them in order and has them available
for students to pick up on the day of their graduation. Our graduating students
have an opportunity to rent the regalia through
our great colleagues at the UBC Bookstore. It’s a busy space. They pick up their regalia and then they get into
their processional order. Then they line up in very long lines and then they process from
the Graduate Student Centre over to the Chan Centre. Not a far walk unless
you’re in tricky shoes. Choose your shoes wisely, don’t bring a lot of personal items and enjoy the day. Our President and Vice
Chancellor plays a key role in congratulating all of the students. He shakes all of their hands, he makes sure that they
all get a photo with him. We live stream our ceremonies for guests who can’t make it. We have photographers who capture all of those special moments. (bright upbeat music) When I see traffic on
social media sharing photos, I know that we’ve done our job and we’ve done it well. It is very fun. It’s a very fun job and
it’s an amazing event to be a part of. (bright upbeat music)
