world needs now is love sweet love no not just for some but for everyone
oh no not just for some but for every the world special guests in the class of 2019 I
welcome you to our commencement exercises at this time I am honored to
welcome to the podium Kathryn May Hernandez senior class president beloved
Stanley once said life is never complete without its challenges we stand together
in this room United as one senior class but we all did not take the same path to
get here our pads crossed and diverged each with their own obstacles we
experienced failure and loss but we also experienced love happiness and success
as a class we have made big decisions that have affected our futures and those
decisions were not easy like many of you at times I grew insecure and doubtful of
my decisions worried that I wouldn’t get accepted into my dream school like many
other people in this room the city and even this world I struggle with my
identity what my life entailed and people’s perception of me I became
concerned about what my friends family and even strangers thought of me we tend
to focus solely on the physical challenges in life yet sometimes we fail
to acknowledge that overcoming our internal struggles also helps prepare us
for future challenges a very special woman who has known me since my first
days at Bayside once told me those who mind don’t matter and those who matter
don’t mind from this I realized that regardless of what color rose we wear
today how many cords are strung upon our necks
or whether we plan to attend University Community College enter the military or
the force we started here together at
Bayside all of our paths meet on this very special day today we are Bayside
High School’s graduating class of 2019 no matter what challenges we face or
where we decide to go after this we always know once a Marlin always a
Marlin thank you now to deliver today’s salutatory
address mitchell john fermenter callahan we’ve all seen those parents maybe your
own who had a soccer football baseball game or any sport really become enraged
by a call and release their emotions by relentlessly yelling at the referee in
extreme cases these parents will be thrown off the premises however there
are better ways for parent angry parents to deliver objections but like many
people today some choose rage and show little tolerance for differing opinions
we are a nation built on self-expression not repression of others however
citizens sometimes mute one another what the hopes are protecting their own
opinions we are paradoxical society we preach
diversity and individuality but when we run into conflicting opinion we should
shut it out and do not try to learn as a result we become polarized and petrified
in gridlock taking a chance to listen to an opposing idea can broaden
perspectives and even strengthen evidence for a cause graduating today is
truly our entrance into society as individuals but we cannot concern
ourselves from reality the world is not pretty there are levels of authority
which we must respect that is not meant to be pessimistic it means that we need
to look further into ourselves and those with differing opinions consider their
opinions their views and their perspectives we must develop diverse
opinions so we can make our way through society with every resource accessible
every one of us now has the tactical tools to be the open individuals that
society so desperately needs we cannot forget our roots as they will guide us
and inevitably determine our outcome as entertaining as yelling parents may be
you do not want to be that person rejected by society because you can
control your temper the same idea is applicable with everything you do
control yourself give respect show empathy and compassion wherever life
leads you now to deliver today’s valedictory
address Elisha Murray Simmons everything about this moment feel serial
for some individuals sitting here today being in my position has been a lifelong
dream so to be honest part of me feels a little guilty about taking a moment away
from a student who may have been standing at three feet missing some
teeth dreaming of this very moment however here I am giving this address
the thought of doing something like this has never crossed my mind but I must
admit standing in front of my friends family teachers and the class of 2019
it’s time to feels good having had the chance to attend my older siblings and
cousins graduations I have witnessed many of these special occasions but
growing up I did not see many people who look like me standing in this position
not to save not to say that it hasn’t happened but I
really found myself relating to others giving an address like this some schools
and universities have never had an african-american valedictorian it seems
crazy to say something like that in 20 19 years from when schools were first
integrated yet here I stand not only as an african-american but as an
african-american woman as to offer final words of wisdom as we
venture off into the unknown sitting in these very seats is the future
generation that will one day make decisions that will drive this nation I
know crazy right us running the nation it will be amazing whether we are
planning on going to college the military or straight into the workforce
we are all about to embark on the joys and tragedies of the real world we have
been exposed to some of this already but once we walk out those doors today life
will be charging at us full speed whether we are black white
asian Hispanic Christian Muslim gay or straight unfortunately life will be
difficult for us unfairly challenging some more than others the difficulties
of life may have already started hitting us while here in highschool
affecting us personally or affecting someone we know and love some of us have
lost family members some of us have taken care of sick parents siblings and
grandparents some of us have tried to balance the stress of school with a job
and some of us have dealt with the everyday pressure and abuse that comes
with being different just getting myself here to this point I have had to endure
my fair share of mental physical and personal difficulties however no matter
what happens we must choose to take these difficult moments and utilize them
as our drive and influence for the years to come we have much to accomplish in
this world change needs to be made within our local
communities and our nation hard work and overcoming difficulties brought us here
to our high school graduation we have imagined ourselves here for years and we
should be proud of our accomplishments I hope to let the little black girls sing
in her third-grade classroom right now know that anything is possible no one
should say otherwise but they will prove them wrong
keep working hard only you can decide where life takes you choose your path
and move forward with confidence thank you at this time all graduates on stage are
to join their classmates in 1981 Bayside High School under their leadership of
Principal Jerry Divini was the first Beach school to commission a senior
medallion this medallion has become known as the Marlin medallion it
represents one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a graduating
senior at Bayside high school only those seniors who have for all
their years at Bayside contributed to the pride and spirit of the school may
be selected the selection is made by the principal and his committee who look for
those students who have dedicated themselves to Bayside high school
these students have been the most active helpful hard-working Marlins giving
energy and time beyond all expectations the Marlin medallion is awarded annually
