BRAD: GOOD EVENING EVERYBODY.I’M BRAD MEANS. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. BRAD: COVERAGE YOU CAN COUNT ON BEGINS WITH THE ROLE PARENTS CAN PLAY IN THEIR CHILDREN’S SAFETY AT COLLEGE.IN RECENT WEEKS, 3 GEORGIA SOUTHERN STUDENTS WERE ABDUCTED AND A STUDENT WAS FOUND WITH A GUN AT KENNESAW STATE. BRAD: NEWSCHANNEL 6’S DEVIN JOHNSON IS LIVE IN THE NEWSROOM TO TELL US HOW PARENTS CAN STAY IN THE LOOP WITH SAFETY ALERTS. DEVIN: IN THE WAKE OF THOSE INCIDENTS AT THE TWO COLLEGES, I SAT DOWN WITH A PARENT AND THE CHIEF OF POLICE AT AUGUSTA UNIVERSITY ON HOW PARENTS CAN STAY CONNECTED WITH THEIR TEEN’S SAFETY THIS SCHOOL YEAR. BRIDGETT CANTEEN / COLLEGE PARENT: “I DON’T WANT A DAY OR SO TO GO BY AND I HAVEN’T HEARD FROM MY CHILD. FOR THESE REASONS RIGHT HERE. DEVIN: BRIDGETT CANTEEN HAS A DAUGHTER AT KENNESAW STATE. SHE WAS UNAWARE OF THE RECENT ARREST UNTIL NOW. CANTEEN SAYS SHE WISH SHE GOT AN ALERT FROM THE CAMPUS AS SOON IT HAPPENED. BRIDGETT CANTEEN / COLLEGE PARENT: “WE SHOULD KNOW AS PARENTS BEFORE THE PUBLIC KNOWS. BECAUSE WE ARE ENTRUSTING OUR CHILDREN IN THESE CAMPUSES.” DEVIN: SO I ASKED THE CHIEF OF POLICE AT AUGUSTA UNIVERSITY, HOW PARENTS CAN STAY IN THE LOOP OF THEIR KID’S SAFETY. CHIEF JAMES LYON / AUGUSTA UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENT: “WE SEND OUT EITHER AN EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION OR A TIMELY WARNING; TO LET OUR COMMUNITY KNOW THAT AN EVENT HAS HAPPENED OR HAS HAPPENED THAT THEY NEED TO TAKE PRECAUTION TO KEEP THEMSELVES SAFE.” DEVIN: CHIEF LYON TELLS ME THEY OFFER OTHER RESOURCES SUCH AS SELF DEFENSE CLASSES AND THE LIVE SAFE APP, WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO ALERT AN OFFICER IN AN EMERGENCY. CANTEEN SAYS SHE WILL ENCOURAGE HER DAUGHTER TO DOWNLOAD THE APP. SHE ADDS THERE SHOULD ALSO BE A WAY FOR PARENTS TO BE CONNECTED WITH SOCIAL MEDIA. BRIDGETT CANTEEN / COLLEGE PARENT: “WE MAY KNOW OF SOMETHING OR HEAR OF SOMETHING, OR CAN DO SOMETHING TO HELP THE SCHOOL OUT. BECAUSE THEY CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH.” DEVIN: CHIEF LYON SAYS PARENTS SHOULD CHECK THE UNIVERSITIES’ WEBSITE FOR DAILY ALERTS ORSAFETY CLASSES FOR THEIR STUDENT TO TAKE. STUDENTS CAN ALSO ADD THEIR PARENTS FOR THE SAFETY NOTIFICATIONS. BRAD BACK TO YOU.
