As you walk off this stage this evening with
your degrees in hand, know that your journeys are just beginning, that you too may encounter
obstacles or adversities that you never anticipated or could have imagined. But when one door closes for you, don’t ever
be afraid to change course and to open another one. Don’t ever be afraid to follow a path we never
before considered or even thought was possible for you. Always be open to new opportunities and possibilities. Try to enjoy the journey and know that you
will find your calling. But along the way, along the way, here’s my
ask. I ask that you always look to find ways to
make that journey easier for others. We need you to help us heal and improve our
communities because we must all call out hate and intolerance wherever and whenever we see
it. We must all acknowledge that our words matter. We must all elevate our discourse, whether
it’s in public, in private and especially on social media. And all of us, all of us here tonight must
leave here and commit to filling the hearts of our next generation with love so they have
no room, no room in them for hate.
