American University’s Gap Program

American University’s Gap Program is a great fit for students who are graduating high school early, or wanting a different type of experience
before college. It’s an academic credit and internship based
program, so while students are here at American University, they can explore their future areas
of interest that they may want to major in, potential careers, and also get a real introduction
to college life on a college campus. When I decided to take a gap year, I really
didn’t know what I wanted but I knew I wanted an internship, and the reality is that nobody
really hires inexperienced 18-year-old interns fresh out of high school. Students in the Gap Program can choose from
thousands of internship opportunities. And we help them by teaching them career skills
like resume writing, interviewing, how to develop a cover letter. I didn’t want to spend all of my time getting
away from academics and losing touch with that academic strength so when I went back
to college it wasn’t like I had taken so much time off, you know getting back into the groove
of studying. Specifically I’m teaching U.S. politics in
the Gap Program. Students come in with a lot of interest in
the topics, and they’re able to participate in an internship as well, which I really think
helps mold them as young people. It’s a great way to get a taste of higher
education moving forward and find out what they like, what they don’t like, especially
in terms of their academics. When it comes to the internship experience,
students often cite to me that they learned more in these 4 months than they did in all
the rest of their academic career together. It’s the combination of the academic and the
personal together that makes this experience quite meaningful.
