Active Learning in First Year Engineering

– When you come into the class it is going to be different
from a lecture class. We teach the first-year class in what we call active learning. So there will be homework
that you will need to do. Some of the homework is to watch videos just kind of like what
you’re watching right now and to come to class prepared. When you come to class we get you to work on homework
problems, actually in class. We do that so that we can be
there to answer questions. The topics that we work
on in the first year, I mentioned the career
exploration interior major. We also will introduce
you to engineering design and have some projects and we will introduce you
to computing concepts. So we have a number of
resources in the classroom. We have faculty like myself. We have a graduate teaching assistant. We have four peer teachers. These peer teachers are either juniors or sophomores or seniors who
have already taken this class. They know the course material
and they are there to help. Their job is to be there
to answer questions. You can ask them specific questions or more general questions about the course and how to be effective.
