A Garden for the Birds on UMass Campus

[BIRDS SINGING] Being able to merge
the love of songbirds and the horticulture
together was really an exciting opportunity for me. We’re in our sixth year
of providing internships to the Stockbridge students. The Songbird Garden
is the campus benefit. We picked this space based on
what a great location it was, both for visibility and
for the number of trees, which would really
attract birds. Then we drew out a sketch,
created a plant list. And it was incredible
hands-on experience and really a group effort. We couldn’t have done this
without the help and expertise of the people we work with. So I mean, it’s everything
from the bluestone path to the hand-carved birdbath
that came from in-house with our crew members, really
talented, that were supporting our interns the whole
way to actually make their idea come to fruition. And it’s really for the
campus, for the students. We created it so it
could be enjoyed. I mean, we’d love it if people
would come to the garden and maybe getting people to
go birding more often even on campus. Or just enjoying how much
impact that songbirds do have on your everyday life. [BIRDS SINGING]
