you put your hand on it they just don’t sit on it you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you [Music] good evening everyone I’m Luis Sanchez president of Moorpark College please rise for the national anthem our vocalist this evening is one of our own students MS Betty Jean Hana Vega oh say can you see I dance early light what so proudly and and the toilet last gleaming whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight o paths we watch were so again through the night mana flag was still there oh say does that star-spangled banner yet oh the ledge Oh [Music] [Applause] please be seated welcome classic to 2017 to the 50th commencement exercise of Moorpark College and welcome to you family and friends faculty and staff Chancellor and trustees to the 4th best college in the nation and the very best Community College in California how does one get to be the fourth best in the nation and the best in California it begins with outstanding faculty and please rise as I acknowledge our faculty as we salute your excellence please rise faculty [Applause] including our esteemed professor Nina Brown president the Academic Senate [Music] and professor Donita read distinguished faculty of the year both of whom both of whom are sitting behind me on the stage and and then it also takes a superb classified staff to maintain our meticulous grounds to tend to the many administrative details required to keep our College running efficiently so with our classified staff that are present please rise and be acknowledged and that would include the great president of the classified Senate Gilbert downs who I know is somewhere out there with us and my own stellar executive assistant Linda Resendez who is also on stage tonight [Applause] it also requires smart and capable managers if you’re a Dean a director a manager vice president please stand to be acknowledged who must be good stewards of the resources entrusted to our care and that would include dr. Julius Okkadu our interim executive vice president and vice president of business services Silvia Barajas it takes a wise Chancellor an effective district staff and public minded trustees to support the college and represent us to the broader community would you please stand including dr. Bernard Luskin Chancellor of the Ventura County Community College District mr. Bernardo Pettis the chair of our Board of Trustees mr. Arturo Hernandez the vice chair of our Board of Trustees trustees Steven Blum Larry Kennedy and Diane McKay it takes extraordinarily hardworking and talented students like the ones graduating today with the students please rise including including Miss Tennessee that Rios the inspiring Associated Students president city behind me and five please be seated it finally you’ll be standing up and sitting down quite a bit tonight finally it takes a village of family and friends like all of you to support and encourage our students and thus support our College so if you’re here on behalf of a student that’s graduating please stand and be acknowledged for your contribution as well [Applause] and that is how we came to be fourth in the nation first in the state and we hope foremost in your hearts it’s been a tradition at Moorpark College to begin each commencement with a palpable expression of our gratitude for all the support and encouragement that our students have received from family friends professors counselors and so many other emissaries of kindness along the way with our graduates please stand once more and turn and face those whom you especially want to thank and let’s give those faithful supporters our heartfelt round of applause [Applause] [Music] thank you you may be seated once more and speaking of our gratitude including our gratitude for the privilege to live in this magnificent Democratic Republic dedicated to the twin ideals of liberty and justice for all we have a number of veterans of the Armed Forces graduating today whose service to our nation warrants our deepest appreciation so if you’re a veteran whether one of our graduates or one of our visitors and guests please rise as we express our profound gratitude for your indispensable service coordination I have one final acknowledgement to make at the onset of our ceremony and that is for the amazing Sharon Miller is that she luminous this evening our student affairs coordinator Sharon’s meticulous attention to the million details required to make today possible along with her passionate devotion to our college and our students is invaluable and we profoundly appreciate her please join me in a round of applause for the incomparable [Applause] yeah it’s my privilege to give you just a few words of encouragement and you’ll be grateful that I have no words of advice for you tonight but I do want to encourage you along the way and clearly tonight we celebrate an important milestone in your life’s journey I want you to know that we’re immensely proud of each of you for most of you I know this has not been an easy journey for many it’s been an extraordinarily difficult journey if some of you had to work and raise children while you pursue your goals at our college some of you had to return to school after years away and struggle to find your confidence for some of you English is not your first language and you had to overcome a language barrier while mastering the substantive material some of you crossed an ocean or two leaving your native countries to study in the United States some survive broken relationships lost jobs and sometimes far worse most of you struggled at one time or another with the cost of college keeping up with your homework and staying focused on your goals and yet here you are to claim your diplomas and certificates along with our enormous respect and though the world has some major challenges you will need to address including the protection of our environment and dealing with global terrorism we have confidence in your ability to face these challenges bravely and wisely and it’s not all bad news according to Money Magazine 2017 will be the hottest job market in years and as Bill Gates reminds us in many ways the world is getting better and not worse in 1990 37% of humanity lived in what the World Bank considers extreme poverty today it is about 10% as just one measure of progress and the number of deaths of children under five has been cut in half since 1990 as you take your leave of us our most important word of in cart encouragement is that you are not alone though there may be times when you feel alone all of us here are committed to you to your well-being and your success I’m going to ask you to stand one more time if if you’re here to support our graduates whether it’s now five years from now or at any time in their lifetime when they need some support please stand so all the graduates know that they’re surrounded by supporters please stand it [Music] thank you all of us are committed to you to your well-being and your success because you represent our fondest hope for the world each of us here pledges to support you as best we can whenever you need us even if it’s many years in the future we ask you to stay connected to us through the Alumni Association so that we know how you’re doing and so that one day you too may help students who are not here yet because unlike some colleges and universities who tell you to look to your left in to your right and to see which students will fall out will fail out of college we say look to your left look to your right and extend a hand to both sides on your way to success and and when you feel alone and spent when your best effort is not good enough when your spirits are low and you feel like quitting I hope you’ll remember the example of the great Michael Jordan cut from his high school basketball team only to return as the NBA legend that he is who said I fail over and over and over again and that is why I succeed and we hope that you’ll continue to reach for your dreams in the spirit of John F Kennedy our young and idealistic president whose life was cut down by an assassin’s bullet just four years before our College was founded as he announced America’s quest to put a man on the moon thus launching the race to space that also launched the stem movement that so many of yours are witnessing in your careers President Kennedy said to the skip to the skeptics that were too timid to dream big dreams he said we do this not because it’s easy but because it’s hard I love that spirit let me say it one more time we do this not because it’s easy but because it’s hard and if that’s not the spirit of Moorpark College I don’t know what is so mighty graduates class of 2017 when the chips are down and you feel defeated because you’ve taken on a bigger challenge than you thought be encouraged for that is precisely your greatest opportunity to reach deep within yourself pick yourself up dust yourself off look your greatest fear straight in the eye and rise to the full glory for which you were born it’s my privilege to bring up professor Denis to read distinguished faculty of the year [Applause] hope can you hear me okay yes okay hope hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness rebellions are built on hope my theme is reflection on hope my discipline is academic and career counseling at the core of what we do in counseling at the heart is based on positive psychology which focuses on optimism and hope after today we have some time look up the writings of Charles R Snyder and Spencer G Niles remember hope Snyder and Niles you have reached one of many benchmarks in your life no matter your decade of life you could be in your teens your 20s your 30s your 40s your 50s or more today is a benchmark there were times before today you asked yourself why am I doing this are you felt I’m too tired to go on are you thought I don’t understand this material yet here you are you persisted because of hope you want to be successful that any of us are here today is a reflection of hope someone let us be born at least one person had hope for us the world is deeply troubled today as it was troubled on the day you were conceived as it was on the day you were born and yet you and all of us are here today rebellions are built on hope Jen are so in the movie rogue one your graduation earning of a certificate are transferring to a university is not just a reflection of your hope it also represents your rebellion to all the forces that are wrong in this world your moving on in your life with good intentions and hope of making it a good one hope is not a passive state but it’s one in which you have to get off your butts and go out in the world and make a good difference Schneider who I mentioned earlier describes hope as our ability to find pathways to our goals and then motivate ourselves to reach them when you look for jobs or go to the University realize that what you are doing is your expression of hope you’re looking beyond and naysayers that make us think this world is dark and hopeless and will always be plagued with drought hunger pollution and Wars you are defying terrorism and poverty those dark forces aren’t so powerful you had the foresight to see that you as an educated person can make a good difference in this planet Jonas Salk said hope lies and dreams an imagination and then the courage of those who dare to dream and to make dreams into reality you are one of the courageous realize the value of your work your actions your forgiveness and your empathy for bringing about positive changes in your own special way make yourselves and your families proud and realize that all of us at Moorpark College carry hope for you that is why we do our jobs hope is the most powerful force except maybe love within you Vaslav Havel said hope is a state of mind not of this world hope in this deep powerful sense means that you work for something just because it’s good you have done it today reaching your goal and celebrating it is wonderful continue to curate create more goals with pathways to accomplishment to make it so choose the people who with you spend your time the most positive the non cynical the sweetest the kindest the warmest and the most genuine they will be your partners in a life full of hope realize that your teachers sitting to my left and all of us on this quad did what we did to help educate you because guess what all of you you are our hope let me end with three motivating quotes and my own comments quote number one stay positive and happy work hard and don’t give up hope tena Desae the Indian actress we have always held on to the hope the belief the conviction that there is a better life a better world beyond the horizon that second quote is from Franklin D Roosevelt 32nd President of the United States my third quote is from the Star Trek universe let’s see was out there you don’t know all that’s out there you don’t know all that’s to come your way bad good when where you don’t know what you do know is hope always live your life with hope and I have the honor of introducing Miss Diane Kay from the BC CCD Board of Trustees thank you on behalf of the board of trustees of the Ventura County Community College District welcome thank you and congratulations thank you for choosing Moorpark College to start-finish enhance or continue your educational journey whether this is your first or last step or somewhere in between congratulations in reaching this of every student are met thank you for whatever success you find and whatever success means to you we hope you always look back on your time here at Moorpark with a mix of gratitude and pride be thankful for this opportunity and be proud of a job well done I’m sure it wasn’t always easy the easiest thought for us though however was last Tuesday night when the Board of Trustees voted for on all of your names to confer these diplomas on you today it is the best thing that we do all year long congratulations and good luck it’s now my pleasure and honor to introduce someone who has worked tirelessly for our district for several years he started first as a student at Ventura College he joined you here at Moorpark College as president for two years he theydo stepped in at Oxnard College to be president for a short time and then with great honor and pride he Abele took over the district as Chancellor for the past two years I want to thank dr. Bernard Luskin and introduce him to you today Bernie let’s go [Applause] it’s great to see everyone and it’s great to be here and I appreciate the introduction by trustee McKay because I just want to thank the Board of Trustees president Sanchez Nina Brown who’s president of the Academic Senate and most of all Teresita is because she recognized ents the students I’m not going to say much except that I represent the three colleges in Ventura County now as Chancellor and I started at Ventura College as a student I was first generation my parents were born in the Ukraine I didn’t know where to go so I found a college and I went there just like you came here for whatever reason and Ventura was founded in 1925 in 1967 Moorpark College became a reality and here you are today I would have gone to war Park when it didn’t exist when I went to Ben’s Iraq and yesterday we were at the graduation of Oxnard College founded 1965 and we’re all in the county so you all understand the whole picture it’s just my particular pleasure today because this will be my last graduation I’m going to retire from the district at the end of June to as an alumni of this district of Ventura College to welcome you as one of the more than a half a million alumni they’ve graduated from our Ventura County community college districts since the district was found so welcome as an alumni along with me thank you let me also now introduce she’s thought I think the president of the Academic Senate is like the chief teacher so let me introduce Nina Brown Thomson alaskan trustees fellow faculty today we are all here to celebrate you the graduates of Moorpark College class of 2017 congratulations from the faculty what I would like you to do briefly is imagine all the faculty you’ve had here lined up in front of you you have several of them here to your right I expect those others who may not be here but if you can imagine us all lined up okay and hopefully many many of them were very good maybe you had a couple that you would choose not to take again but now now you get to dismiss us you have moved on and you are on your way and we are so proud but before you go there’s a couple of things I would like to say on behalf of all of us faculty are two things first we want you to know one more thing can you cope with that and secondly we want to request one more thing from you okay so first of all what we’d like you to know we’d like you to know that we think as faculty we have the best jobs in the world being here for you at Moorpark College but simply we are dream makers every day we come here and help put together some dreams of yours on your way every day I have the privilege of getting up and I can say to myself now what am I going to do today and I get to say oh today I am going to help make some dreams come true and off I go in my role as a dream maker that is an incredible privilege ladies and gentlemen so thank you for that because that’s what we faculty our weather way in our classrooms our counseling offices our athletics areas whether in the performing arts stages whether we’re in our labs what have I forgotten our library all the different places that we get to work with you we see ourselves as dream makers and today we know that we have helped you make one of your dreams come true because today here you are graduating from Moorpark College very very wonderful so one of the beauties about this is that in the process of you making your dreams come true you are making our dreams come true as faculty have you thought of that this is a relationship that is an amazing one to be in a privileged one for us so thank you for helping our dreams come true so so now now you can dismiss us from your lives but before you go we have the final request for you are you okay this is it please don’t stop dreaming don’t start dreaming for yourselves and don’t stop dreaming for others in our world and please don’t stop making your dreams come true so before we go and we thank each individual one of you as your faculty for allowing us into all worlds and your dreams Moorpark College graduating class of 2017 congratulations from your faculty and it is my especial remember your roots remember more Parker remember your family remember your morals hold on to them question them work towards them and if the wrong shift them a little it’s fine to be wrong as long as
