[CHEERS] AND WHAT’S MORE AND WHAT I FIND TRULY AMAZING IS THAT 3 OUT OF EVERY 4 OF YOU WHO ARE RECEIVING YOUR ADVANCED DEGREES ARE WOMEN. [CHEERS] YES. EVERY ONE OF YOU HAVE EARNED THE RIGHT TO BE PROUD OF THE DEGREE YOU’RE RECEIVING TODAY. IT’S THE PRODUCT OF YEARS OF STUDY AND SWEAT, RESEARCH AND WRITING, SLEEPLESS NIGHTS, AND SAPPED ENERGY. AND, AS PRESIDENT COLE MENTIONED, ONLY A FORTUNATE FEW EVER REACH THIS LEVEL OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. SO MUCH SO IT DESERVES REPEATING. MORE AMERICANS TODAY THAN EVER BEFORE IN OUR HISTORY HAVE AN ADVANCED DEGREE. YOU REPRESENT WITH YOUR MASTER’S DEGREE ONLY 9% OF THE POPULATION AND WITH YOUR DOCTORAL DEGREE ONLY 2% OF THE AMERICAN POPULATION. SO, YOU ARE TRULY AMONG THE ELITE FEW. [APPLAUSE] [CHEERS] OKAY. NOW, SINCE EVERY ONE OF YOU IS A GRADUATE STUDENT, LET’S BE CANDID. HOW MANY OF YOU REMEMBER YOUR UNDERGRADUATE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER? YEAH, NEITHER DO I. [LAUGHTER] DO YOU REMEMBER HIS OR HER MESSAGE? NEITHER DO I. [LAUGHTER] NO DOUBT, THIS YEAR’S GRADUATING CLASS AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE WILL REMEMBER ROBERT SMITH. [LAUGHTER] FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. PLEASE FORGIVE ME AS I DISPEL ANY SIMILAR — [LAUGHTER] I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE. BUT — IF — I WILL EMPHASIZE, HOWEVER, ONE POINT AND ONLY ONE PIECE OF ADVICE AND I WILL SPEND THE NEXT TWO MINUTES FOCUSING ON THAT ONE PIECE OF ADVICE. WHILE TONIGHT’S CEREMONY CELEBRATES YOUR DEGREE AS A GOAL AND A DESTINATION, IT IS, IN FACT, A LAUNCHING PAD TO A LIFETIME OF EXPERIENCES. AND MY WISH FOR EACH OF YOU IS THAT, AS YOU MOVE FORWARD, YOU KEEP YOURSELVES OPEN TO NEW PATHS AND UNEXPECTED CHALLENGES. I WILL SPARE YOU THE DETAILS, BUT MY LIFE AND MY CAREER PATH WAS CHANGED IN GENUINELY MEANINGFUL WAYS, IN FACT, IN WAYS I COULD NEVER HAVE PREDICTED BY SUCH PROFOUND FORCES AS PEPPERIDGE FARM MILANO COOKIES, A MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL STRIKE, LONG LINES WAITING FOR GASOLINE AND, OF COURSE, MANY CARING FRIENDS, MENTORS AND FAMILY MEMBERS. SO WHY SHOULD THAT MATTER TO YOU? THE REALITY IS THAT PREVIOUS GENERATIONS BUILT THE WORLD WE LIVE IN, MUCH OF IT IS GOOD. BUT SOME OF THAT FELL SHORT OF EXPECTATIONS. THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF INTERESTING CHALLENGES THAT WILL ALLOW YOU TO APPLY YOUR EDUCATION AND YOUR IMAGINATION BECAUSE THE CHALLENGES WE FACE ARE MANY. THEY ARE VARIED. AND THEY ARE EXTREMELY COMPLICATED. DEMANDING THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF HIGHLY EDUCATED PROBLEM SOLVERS. MY NUMBER ONE CHALLENGE IS CLIMATE CHANGE. IT IS CLEAR TO ME WHERE THE SCIENTIFIC CONSENSUS STANDS, AND EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT COMPLETELY CONVINCED OF ITS IMPORTANCE, IT DOESN’T CHANGE OR DIMINISH THE COMPLEXITY OF THE ISSUE. NOT JUST THE TECHNICAL CHALLENGES BUT THE SOCIOPOLITICAL COMPLEXITIES OF SUCH FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCES AS THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DEVELOPED WORLD VERSUS THOSE OF THE DEVELOPING WORLD. ALTERNATIVELY, YOU MAY BE INTERESTED IN GLOBALIZATION. THERE IS NO DOUBT IT IS IMPROVED GLOBAL AVERAGE WEALTH AND LIFTED MILLIONS OF PEOPLE OUT OF POVERTY WHILE AT THE SAME TIME IT IS GREATLY EXACERBATED INCOME DISPARITY AS WELL. LET’S PAUSE FOR A MOMENT LEST WE FORGET MEDICAL ADVANCES. WHAT WONDERFUL IMPROVEMENTS HAVE BEEN REALIZED IN LONGEVITY. BUT DOES PAIN MANAGEMENT HAVE TO IMPLY OPIOID ABUSE? DOES GENE THERAPY HAVE TO LEAD TO GENE EDITING? ANSWERS TO THESE MANY OTHER QUESTIONS EXIST BUT IT WILL TAKE COURAGE AND RESOLVE TO MAKE THE DIFFICULT CHOICES NECESSARY TO BUILD A SUSTAINABLE, RESILIENT WORLD YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN HOPEFULLY ASPIRE TO ACHIEVE. THAT IS WHY I HOPE YOU REMAIN OPEN-MINDED TO PATHS YOU MAY CHOOSE TO FOLLOW. LEARN — I EARNED DEGREES IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND APPLIED PHYSICS, YET MY PATH BROUGHT ME TO A CORPORATE BOARDROOM AND TODAY I CAN BARELY MULTIPLY DOUBLE DIGITS. [LAUGHTER] BUT MY EDUCATION WAS NOT AT ALL WASTED. IT TAUGHT ME A WAY OF ADDRESSING CHALLENGING SITUATIONS THAT TRAINED MY MIND TO ANALYZE PROBLEMS AND DESIGN SOLUTIONS. YOUR HARD-EARNED DEGREES ARE TOOLS THAT WILL SERVE YOU ALONG WHATEVER PATH YOU CHOOSE TO FOLLOW. HOW MANY OF YOU WILL SEARCH FOR SOLUTIONS TO THE ENORMOUS PROBLEMS BROUGHT ON BY GLOBAL TRENDS AND TECHNOLOGY, CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS AND SOVEREIGN POWER SHIFTS? THE PROBLEMS WE FACE ARE SERIOUS AND COMPLICATED AND DON’T LEND THEMSELVES TO TWITTER-SIZED SOLUTIONS. YOU ARE WELL-EQUIPPED TO FACE THESE CHALLENGES. BUT IT ISN’T BECAUSE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER KNOWLEDGE YOU HAVE GAINED. IN FACT, DARE I SUGGEST THAT MUCH OF THAT INFORMATION MAY ALREADY BE STALE. MORE SO IT’S THE TOOLS, PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS AND THE INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY THAT CARRIED YOU TO THIS DAY. ONE FINAL THOUGHT, COLLEGES BRING ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE TOGETHER, AND THE REST OF THE WORLD, UNFORTUNATELY, WE FIND OURSELVES RETREATING INTO NARROW, TRIBALISTIC CAMPS WE CHOOSE BECAUSE THEY’RE FILLED WITH PEOPLE WHO MAY LOOK, THINK AND SPEAK LIKE WE DO. AND INSTEAD OF ENGAGING WITH AND LEARNING FROM PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF OUR GROUP, WE ARE MORE LIKELY TO DISMISS THEIR VIEWS OR EVEN WORSE GO ON THE ATTACK. SOLVING TODAY’S GREATEST PROBLEMS WILL REQUIRE A MEASURE OF CIVILITY, A WILLINGNESS TO LISTEN TO THE OTHER SIDE, WHETHER IT’S THE PERSON SITTING ACROSS THE BAR OR SITTING ACROSS THE BOARDROOM. IT WILL REQUIRE OPEN-MINDEDNESS AND COLLABORATION TO SPREAD AWARENESS, DEBATE IDEAS AND SHARE SOLUTIONS. THANKFULLY, THESE ARE ALL THINGS THAT, REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOUR SPECIFIC DEGREE IS IN, GRADUATING FROM MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY HAS INSTILLED IN YOU. IT IS ONLY THROUGH EVERYBODY’S CONTRIBUTIONS AND EVERYONE’S PARTICIPATION IN OUR SOCIETY THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO CONFRONT ISSUES AS DIFFICULT AND COMPLICATED AS THOSE FACING OUR DEMOCRACY TODAY.
