GOOD EVENING, GOOD EVENING, WELCOME TO THE
2019 UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON COLLEGE OF EDUCATION COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY. MY NAME IS MIA TUAN AND AS DEAN OF THE COLLEGE,
IT IS MY HONOR TO SERVE AS MASTER OF CEREMONIES FOR THIS CELEBRATION. TODAY, WE PROUDLY PRESENT TO YOU MORE THAN
700 NEW EDUCATORS, RESEARCHERS AND LEADERS TO TRANSFORM EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS. PLEASE STAND NOW, FOR THE PRECESSION OF OUR
GRADUATING CLASS. [ CHEERING ]>>FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO HAVE JOINED US TODAY,
MAY I PROUDLY PRESENT THE 140th GRADUATING CLASS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON COLLEGE
OF EDUCATION . PLEASE BE SEATED. AS WE BEGIN THIS EVENING’S CELEBRATION, I
WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE WE ARE IN THE LAND OF THE PEOPLE. THAT IS REMEMBER TO HONOR NATIVE PEOPLE WHO
FOUNDED AND REMAIN A VITAL PART OF OUR COMMUNITY. GRADUATES, THIS IS A DAY YOU HAVE BEEN EAGERLY
ANTICIPATING. IT HAS ARRIVED. AS YOU PREPARE TO WALK ACROSS THE STAGE IN
A FEW SHORT MOMENTS, I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE A SHORT VIDEO, TO SET THE MOOD FOR TODAY CEREMONY. [ MUSIC ] LOOKING BACK TO WHEN I GOT THE
ACCEPTANCE LETTER I KNEW THIS WAS THE NEXT STEP TO BECOMING A TEACHER. WHEN I WAS YOUNG, HE MADE ME FEEL SAFE, WELCOME,
COMFORTABLE. AS I GOT OLDER, REMEMBER THE WARMTH AND I WANT TO BE ABLE TO GIVE THAT TO OTHERS. I CAME INTO THE UW THINKING I KNEW WHAT IT MEANT TO BE
A TEACHER. BUT I AM LEAVING WITH A WHOLE NEW UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IT MEANS TO
TEACH. STEPPING ON CAMPUS FELT LIKE HOME. THE BRICK BUILDING, THE TREES AND FLOWERS NATURE, I REMEMBER TYPING PAGES AND PAGES OF RESEARCH PAPERS, TAKING NOTE BOOKS FULL OF NOTES DURING CLASS. AS THE YEARS PASSED, I WATCHED CHERRY BLOSSOMS
COME AND GO, I KNEW THAT I WAS ONE STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING A TEACHER. [ MUSIC ] THE LEARNING PROCESS IS CHALLENGING, EXHAUSTING, FULFILLING, WORTHWHILE THE STRUGGLE WILL HELP ME TO PERSEVERE. IT HELPED ME TO REMEMBER WHY I AM HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. I’VE LEARNED THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING MYSELF AND HOW THAT WILL IMPACT MY TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM. I’M PREPARED TO THINK CRITICALLY STANDING HERE AT GRADUATION, I KNOW THAT I’M READY FOR ANY CHALLENGE THAT MIGHT COME NEXT. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR 15 YEARS, I’M READY
TO GO INTO THE WORLD AND START MY NEXT CHAPTER. [ APPLAUSE ]>>THAT WAS SIENNA, REFLECTING ON TIME AT THE
COLLEGE. FIRST IS AN UNDERGRADUATE AND THIS PAST YEAR,
IS A MASTERS IN TEACHING CANDIDATE. THANK YOU. AS WE START TODAY’S CELEBRATION, I WOULD LIKE
TO REFLECT ON YOUR TIME HERE AND IN LAYERS TO COME, MATTERS. WHY YOU MATTER TO YOUNG PEOPLE AND FRANKLY,
TO ALL OF OUR FUTURES. FOR FAR TOO LONG AND ALARMING NUMBER OF THEM
PEOPLE, HAVE LACKED ACCESS TO RIGOROUS MEANINGFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCES. NEEDED TO REALIZE POTENTIAL. DATA SHOWS, STARTING AT BIRTH AND PERSONS
ZIP CODE, RACE AND FAMILY INCOME LARGELY DICTATE BUT EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES WILL BE AVAILABLE. THIS STATE OF AFFAIRS IS UNACCEPTABLE. I’M ALSO HOPEFUL, WHAT I SEE HAPPENING AT
COLLEGE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SO MANY EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS, SHOWS THE PROMISE OF
WHAT WE CAN DO, TOGETHER. IN JANUARY, I SAW UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM
OUR COLLEGE WORK WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN SEATTLE’S NEIGHBORHOOD DURING AN EVENT CALLED
IDEA. A THREE-DAY COMPETITION, TO GENDER IDEAS TO
IMPROVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR YOU. ALONGSIDE LEADERS FROM A SMALLEY FAMILY SAFETY
TASK FORCE, TINY TOTS DEVELOPMENT CENTER, AND MERCY HOUSING . THE EXPLORED OPPORTUNITIES
TO ADVANCE THE WELL-BEING OF YOUNG PEOPLE AND FAMILIES. I HAVE SEEN THE NEXT-GENERATION GREAT TEACHERS
PREPARE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, FOR THEIR STUDENTS. FUTURE TEACHERS LIKE REBECCA, OLIVERA, A FIRST
GENERATION COLLEGE GRAD, AND AN IMMIGRANT WHO UNDERSTANDS THE POWER OF CLASSROOMS WHERE
STUDENTS FEEL BACKGROUNDS ARE WELCOME. REBECCA, AND HER 200+ MASTERS CANDIDATE, WILL
EACH TOUCH THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS, FOR YEARS TO COME THE ROCK CAREERS. I HAVE SEEN DOCTORATES IN IT LIKE SUYAN SHIM HELP RESEARCH, PRACTICE PARTNERSHIPS, LOCAL EDUCATORS, DISTRICTS AND COMMUNITIES. SUYAN AND OUR OTHER DOCTORAL STUDENTS
HELP TEACHERS IMPROVE INSTRUCTION, HELP LEADERS MAKE SCHOOL SYSTEMS MORE ACCOUNTABLE, AND
HELP CREATE OPPORTUNITIES MORNING PEOPLE TO EXPLORE, AND INDIVIDUAL POTENTIAL. DURING THE YEARS TO COME, EACH OF YOU WILL
ENCOUNTER OBSTACLES IN THE COURTS AND HERSELF. IN THOSE MOMENTS, REMEMBER WHY YOU DO THE
WORK YOU DO. REMEMBER, YOU ARE WELL PREPARED. YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED STUDIES AT
ONE OF THE TOP FIVE PUBLIC EDUCATION SCHOOLS IN THE NATION. COLLECTIVELY, YOU HAVE SPENT TENS OF THOUSANDS
OF HOURS IN CLASSROOMS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION. ENGAGED EXPLORING THE MOST PRESSING CHALLENGES
IN EDUCATION TODAY. BEING IN EDUCATION WHATEVER YOUR ROLE HAPPENS
TO BE, CLEARS A TREMENDOUS POSSIBILITY. YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO EVERY CHILD,
ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO ARE MOST NOTABLE. I HAVE SEEN YOU EMBRACE THIS RESPONSIBILITY. I AM INSPIRED HER PASSION TO CREATE A WORLD,
WHERE EVERY CHILD IS HOPEFUL AND KNOWS THEY ARE VALUED. FINALLY, I ASK YOU TO REMEMBER ALL THE PEOPLE
WHO HELPED YOU DURING YOUR JOURNEY. PARENTS, FRIENDS, TEACHERS, PARTNERS, THESE
PEOPLE HAVE PROVIDED INVALUABLE SUPPORT. ESPECIALLY DURING THE TOUGH MOMENTS, ALONG
THE WAY. MANY OF THOSE PEOPLE ARE HERE TODAY. DOING IS YOUR PERSONAL MILESTONE, B McBRIDE
AND SHARE IN YOUR JOY. I INVITE YOU NOW, TO TURN AND FIND THOSE LOVED
ONES AND THANK THEM FOR THEIR SUPPORT [ APPLAUSE ]>>THANK YOU, FOR BEING PART
OF THIS SPECIAL DAY FAMILY AND FRIENDS. THANK YOU, GRADUATES FOR STICKING IT THROUGH. THANK YOU, FOR YOUR ONGOING DEDICATION. I NOW HAVE THE HONOR OF INTRODUCING OUR KEYNOTE
SPEAKER. ONE OF THE REASONS MOST PASSIONATE ADVOCATES
FOR HIS OCCASIONAL JUSTICE. ERIN IS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTHEAST
SEATTLE EDUCATION COALITION. AN ALLIANCE OF EDUCATORS, PARENTS, CAREGIVERS
AND SOME FEUDAL RESIDENTS WORKING TO IMPROVE EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN OF COLOR. SHE IS THE CREATOR AND CHIEF WRITER .COM AND
SERVES AS AN IMPORTANT ADVISOR TO THIS COLLEGES EFFORTS TO ADVANCE EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE. PLEASE JOIN ME IN WELCOMING HER ERIN. [ APPLAUSE ]>>THANK YOU. FACULTY, STAFF, GRADUATE. THANKS FOR ALLOWING ME TO JOIN YOU TODAY. IT IS AN HONOR TO CELEBRATE THIS MILESTONE
WITH YOU. WHEN I PUT ON THE ROBE AND HAT TODAY, IT BROUGHT
BACK MEMORIES. WHEN I GRADUATED, I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD
BE STUDYING , AND ROBIN GOT AGAIN. THANK YOU. TO PREPARE I DID SOME RESEARCH. I ASKED MY NETWORK WHAT THEY REMEMBERED FROM
THEIR COMMITMENTS BECAUSE PEOPLE DON’T REMEMBER. THIS DOES NOT BODE WELL FOR ME. I ASKED MY SIX-YEAR-OLD, WHICH HE REMEMBERED,
SHE SAID, SHE REMEMBERS WEARING A YELLOW HAT AND SINGING JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE CAN’T STOP THIS
FEELING. SINCE MOST OF YOU WILL NOT REMEMBER MY WORDS,
HOPE YOU REMEMBER WHEN YOU’RE FEELING. I HOPE YOU FEEL PROUD OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. WHAT YOU DID TOOK EFFORT. YOUR PROFESSORS, YOUR CLASSMATES, STRETCH
YOUR THINKING AROUND RACE, EDUCATION AND WHAT IT MEANS TO WORK FOR EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE. THE PROUD . I HOPE YOU REALIZE NOT, HOW FAST
THE WORLD IS. HOW LITTLE WE ACTUALLY KNOW . MY FRIEND, KNOWING
WHAT WE DON’T KNOW WE DON’T KNOW. I FIND THIS THINKING INCREDIBLY HUMBLING AND
I THINK IT MAKES ME A BETTER PERSON AND BETTER ABLE TO WORK FOR JUSTICE. HOPE YOU ARE A LITTLE BIT SCARED. BEING SCARED IS GOOD. IT’S A GOOD THING, WHEN WE ARE WORKING TOWARD
SOCIAL CHANGE. IT REMINDED US WE ARE SPIRITUAL BEINGS IT
FOR MY JUSTIFYING CONNECTIONS AND SUPPORT. ESPECIALLY WITH THE BOAT COMING FROM DIFFERENT
BACKGROUND. THIS IS AT THE HEART OF RACIAL JUSTICE WORK. RELATIONSHIPS AND CONNECTIONS WITH OTHERS. LET ME SAY THIS AGAIN. AT THE HEART OF RACIAL JUSTICE WORK CONNECTIONS
AND RELATIONSHIPS. RELATIONSHIPS DRIVER WORK WE NEED TO EXTEND
OURSELVES AND OUR RELATIONSHIPS TO SEE PEOPLE DIFFERENT THAN US. PEOPLE ASK, HOW ARE THE CHILDREN? THE HOPEFUL REPLY IS, ALL THE CHILDREN ARE
WELL. NOT SOME, NOT JUST FRIENDS, ALL OF THE CHILDREN. IMAGINE WHAT SCHOOLS COULD LOOK LIKE AND FEEL
IT, IF HE CARED FOR ALL THE CHILDREN. ESPECIALLY BLACK AND BROWN CHILDREN. IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES, LBJ DISABLED AND
THOSE WHO FEEL OTHER AND OUTSIDE OF THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM. WE CAN’T DO THIS . WE MUST DO THIS. TO THE PARENTS, FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS
CONNECT ABOUT YOU TOO. I HOPE YOU FEEL PROUD , MAYBE RELIEVED YOU
GOT YOUR GRADUATES HERE. THEY ARE ABOUT TO EMBARK A NEW ADVENTURE. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ] ABOUT ONE WEEK AGO CALLED MY MOTHER SHE GAVE
ME THE HIGHEST COMPLIMENT. WOW, THAT’S A LOT OF PEOPLE. THEY ARE GOING TO LISTEN TO? I’M GOING TO GO HOME AND SAID THEY LEFT AT
THE JOKESTER CLAPPED AT THE RIGHT TIME. THANK YOU, I WILL TELL MY MOTHER. AND GRIP AND WHY IS PART OF THE ASIAN MAJORITY. I HAD TEACHERS THAT LOOKED LIKE ME. I GREW UP WITH THE FIRST ASIAN GOVERNOR. I COULD GO TO 711 . DID NOT HAVE TO EXPLAIN
MY ASIAN THIS I GOT TO BE MYSELF. IT WAS A SOLID FOUNDATION. I GREW UP KNOWING WHO I AM. THIS IS WHAT I HOPE WE CAN CREATE FOR ALL
THE CHILDREN IN SCHOOLS AND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. THEY NEED TO BE SEEN, THEY NEED TO BE ABLE
TO FEEL . TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICES AND SUPPORT. THANK YOU FOR FEEDING YOUR GRADUATES. YOUR WORK IS NOT DONE. THEY WILL NEED YOU IN THE COMING MONTHS AND
COMING YEARS. WORK FOR JUSTICE IS NOT A PATH WANTED TO LEARN. THEY NEED CARE. SQUAD CARE COME FROM AFRICAN- AMERICAN MELISSA
HARRIS PERRY. SHE TALKS ABOUT SQUAD CARE AS A WAY OF UNDERSTANDING
OUR NEEDS AS HUMANS. IT ACKNOWLEDGES WE LEAN ON ONE ANOTHER . WE
ARE NOT ALONE. WE ARE ENMESHED IN WEBS OF MUTUAL, SYMBIOTIC
RELATIONSHIPS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT, AS GRADUATES
MOVE ON. THEY WILL BE CHANGING THE WORLD, AND CHALLENGING
THE STATUS QUO. YOU’LL NEED THEM. THEY WILL NEED YOU TO LISTEN TO THEM. WHEN THEY COME HOME FRUSTRATED AND AND SURE
OF NEXT STEPS. THEY WILL NEED YOU TO REMIND THEM TO BREATHE. IT REQUIRES URGENCY. IT TOOK HUNDREDS OF YEARS, TO CREATE THESE
PROBLEMS. THE PROBLEMS WON’T BE UNDONE, OVERNIGHT. THE CONTRIBUTIONS TO UNDOING RACISM, WILL
HAVE AN IMPACT. THEY MAY NEED YOU TO CONTINUE TO FEED THEM. BRING THEM LAUGHTER. ASK, HEY, HOW IS IT GOING? BE PART OF THEIR SQUAD CARE. GRADUATES, BEFORE YOU SPREAD ACROSS THE CITY
AND NATION ANGLO, TAKE A MOMENT TO THANK EACH OTHER. BEFORE YOU LEAVE TODAY, NOT NOW, TAKE OUT
THE PHONES AND GRAB A SOPHIE WITH FRIENDS THAT YOU MADE. DAGGETT, SO YOU CAN MAKE HASHTAG TRENDS ON
TWITTER. INSTAGRAM IS WHAT WE USE NOW. FIND THAT HASHTAG. MAKE SURE YOU STAY CONNECTED. IF ONLY ANNUALLY, SO YOU CAN BE PART OF EACH
OTHER’S SQUAD CARE. YOU WILL NEED EACH OTHER, ON THE JOURNEY AHEAD. WHEN YOU SEE EACH OTHER, ASK HOW ARE THE CHILDREN? BE HOPEFUL THAT YOU WILL HEAR ALL THE CHILDREN
ARE WELL. BE PROUD. MOST IMPORTANTLY FEEL. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ] THANK YOU. NOW I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE THE FIRST OF
OUR STUDENT SPEAKERS FROM THE CLASS OF 2019. OUR UNDERGRADUATE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER, IS
AN EARLY CHILDHOOD AND FAMILY STUDIES MAJOR. THE JOURNEY AT THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, ALLOWED
HER TO CULTIVATE A PASSION FOR JUST A COUPLE SOCIETY. SHE HAS ACQUIRED THE PASSION TO VARIOUS LEADERSHIP
ROLES AT THE PACIFIC ISLANDERS SCHOOL COMMISSION, AND THE MICRONESIAN ISLAND CLUB. HER COMMITMENT TO HER WORK HAS LED TO RECOGNITION
AS A MEMBER OF THE 100, AND MARY GATE SCHOLAR AND ANDERSON OLSON SCHOLAR, MARCY FELLOW,
AND OF SOUTH SELLER. PLEASE JOIN ME. [ APPLAUSE ]>>THANK
YOU , FOR THAT WONDERFUL INTRODUCTION. GOOD EVENING. FACULTY, STAFF, FAMILY, FRIENDS, GRADUATING
CLASS OF 2019, FIRST AND FOREMOST, I WANT TO CONGRATULATE US. OUR HARD WORK AND PERSEVERANCE, LED TO THIS
MOMENT. I AM EXTREMELY HONORED, TO SHARE MY REFLECTION
OF EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE WITH YOU ALL. ALTHOUGH, BEFORE I CONTINUE, WENT TO ACKNOWLEDGE
PEOPLE, WHOSE LIMBS I SETTLE ON. NATIONS ALONG WITH THE OTHER PEOPLE, WHOSE
ANCESTORS LANDS WE OCCUPY. I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
OF WHAT I, HOME ISLAND. SAIPAN. THE PEOPLE WHOSE MODERATE AND WHEN ALLOW ME
TO CULTIVATE A PASSION FOR EDUCATION. NOW, TO MAKE IT CLEAR, WE DO NOT DO THIS ACKNOWLEDGMENT,
JUST FOR THE SAKE OF ACKNOWLEDGING IT. WE ACKNOWLEDGE IT IS A WAY TO SAY, THE INSTITUTION
WE ARE GETTING OUR DEGREE FROM, SHOULD MAKE SURE THESE LANDS ARE LIBERATED, FROM HISTORICAL
AND [ INDISCERNIBLE ] FOR IMPERIALISM. THAT, IS EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE. IT NEEDS TO BE TRANSFORMATIVE, AND INTENTIONAL. WHAT THAT MEANS, IS WHEN WE TALK ABOUT EDUCATIONAL
JUSTICE, THE FIRST THING WE NEED TO ANSWER IS, WHO IS THIS DEGREE FOR? WHAT PURPOSE DOES IT SERVE? IS IT FOR THE KIDS WHOSE LUNCHES DELI. THE STATE INSISTS ON PUTTING THEM IN DEBT? FOR THE ADJUSTED TEACHER, WHO SPENT HER LAST
DOLLAR ON SHOCK? AS FOR THE BLACK AND BROWN KIDS, WHOSE FUTURES
ARE CORRUPTED BY THIS GOAL TO PRISON PIPELINE? IS IT FOR THE IMMIGRANT FAMILY, WHO BATTLED
THE TRAUMAS OF DOCUMENTATION? FOR MANY OF YOU, INCLUDING MYSELF, THESE INJUSTICES,
OR BIG PART OF THE REASON WHY WE PURSUE THIS DEGREE. WHAT FUELS US, IS THE PASSION TO MAKE THE
WORLD A BETTER PLACE. THIS DEGREE, BEING SO MUCH MORE THAN A GATEWAY
TO A PAYCHECK. IT ALLOWS US TO HAVE A DEEP- ROOTED IMPACT,
ON THE LIVES OF CHILDREN STUDENTS, FAMILY, TEACHERS, SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS, AND ENTIRE
COMMUNITIES. WE WILL BE MORE THAN TEACHERS , RESEARCHERS
OR POLICYMAKERS. THIS DEGREE, MAKES AGENTS OF CHANGE. THE CATALYST FOR A JUST SURVIVING DRIVING
SOCIETY. I HEAR THIS, BECAUSE I’VE HAD EDUCATORS THAT
MADE AN IMPACT ON ME. YOU SEE, I COME FROM A MIXED STATUS IMMIGRANT
FAMILY. FROM AN AMERICAN TERRITORY ISLAND IN THE PACIFIC. MY FAMILY AND I BATTLED ON STABLE HOUSING
FOOD INSECURITY. THE CONSTANT FEAR, OF DEPORTATION. MY CHANCES OF PURSUING HIGHER EDUCATION WAS
SLIM. THESE EDUCATORS MAJOR, MY FAMILY AND I, WERE
SUPPORTED. THANKS TO THEM, I CROSSED THE PACIFIC OCEAN,
I STAND BEFORE YOU TODAY, AS THE FIRST PERSON IN MY FAMILY, TO NOT ONLY COME TO THE U.S.,
BUT TO ALSO EARN A DEGREE, AND TO BECOME AN EDUCATOR MYSELF. [ APPLAUSE ] THIS VERY DEGREE, GIVES US THE CAPACITY TO
EMPOWER OUR COMMUNITIES. TO REWRITE NARRATIVES, TO CHALLENGE AND DISMANTLE
CLASSIST SYSTEMS. TO LEVERAGE THE VOICES OF MARGINALIZED GROUPS. PERSONALLY, MY DEGREE IS FOR MY PARENTS. AFTER WORKING LONG YEARS, BATTLING ANTI-IMMIGRATION
POLICY, FINALLY MADE IT , SHE CONTINENTAL AMERICA, TO WATCH THEIR DAUGHTER GRADUATE. [ APPLAUSE ] IT IS ALSO FOR ALL THE CHILDREN OF IMMIGRANT
FAMILIES, WHOSE CHILDHOODS ARE RIDDLED BY THE TRAUMA OF DOCUMENTATION. I WANT MY DEGREE TO HELP CHANGE INEVITABLE
SYSTEMS, SO EVERY FAMILY, GETS THE OPPORTUNITY TO THRIVE. NOW, MY FELLOW GRADUATES, I ASK AGAIN, WHO
IS YOUR DEGREE FOR? WHAT PURPOSE DOES IT SERVE? I WANT TO EXTEND MY WARMEST CONGRATULATIONS
TO YOU ALL. WITH THE PRIVILEGE OF HAVING THIS DEGREE,
I HOPE YOU CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR A JUST AND EQUITABLE SOCIETY. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ]>>THANK YOU. NOW DR. LYNN DIRECTOR OF THE COLLEGES UNDERGRADUATE

670 PEOPLE TRY RECIPIENTS AFTER TODAY, I WILL BE PART OF THE 3% LATINA HOWEVER EARNED A
MASTERS DEGREE IN THE U.S. TRUTH BE TOLD, NOT BEING HERE WAS EASY OR A PIE IN THE SKY
IT TOOK EFFORT AND PERSEVERANCE. IT TOOK HUNDREDS OF HOURS READING ABOUT THEORIES,
AT TIMES, WE CANNOT MAKE SENSE OF IT. LEARNING FROM HOW TO IMPROVE INSTRUCTIONAL
LEADERSHIP, TO THE IMPORTANCE OF STATISTICAL MEASUREMENT OF DATA. NOT TO MENTION, FORMING A COMMITTEE DEFENSIVE,
AND OF COURSE PRESENTATIONS BECAUSE WITHOUT THEM, WOULD IT BE GRADUATE SCHOOL? I WISH I COULD TELL YOU WE’RE DONE BUT I WOULD BE LYING. THE REAL WORK HAS JUST BEGUN. IT IS NO SECRET, GOOD EDUCATION HAS POWER
TO CHANGE LIVES. WITH THIS NEW IS THE DEMAND FOR CHANGE. EDUCATION IS MORE THAN TEXTBOOKS. HAVING AN ACTIVE EDUCATION, BRINGS KNOWLEDGE
INTO OUR LIVES. KNOWLEDGE THAT ALLOWS US TO DEVELOP UNIQUE
PERSPECTIVE HOW WE LOOK AND ACT ABOUT OUR SURROUNDINGS. IN MY CASE, EDUCATION HAS GIVEN ME THE KNOWLEDGE
AND POWER TO CHANGE THE COUNTRY WHERE I GREW UP. KNOWLEDGE, NOT EVEN DEPORTATION, CAN TAKE
THAT AWAY. [ APPLAUSE ] SOON, WE WILL BE CULMINATING
AN EXPERIENCE THAT IT BROUGHT US AN IMMENSE AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE. WE HAVE LEARNED, GRADUATE SCHOOL, IS LIKE
KINDERGARTEN. WE HAVE CONSTANT CONSTANT ADULT SUPERVISION. TAKING NAPS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY, AR ACCEPTABLE, EAT COOKIES FOR LUNCH I DID. WE CUT AND PASTE OFTEN. WE ALSO REALIZE, SCHOOL IS LIKE LEARNING HOW
TO RIDE A BIKE. THE FIRST RIDE IS NEVER OVER. UNTIL YOU STOP TRYING. MEANING, WE ARE HERE TODAY, BECAUSE WE WERE
PERSISTENT, WE NEVER GAVE UP. MY POINT BEING, THE KNOWLEDGE THAT WE HAVE
GAINED, WILL IMPACT SOMEONE’S LIFE. SOMEONE, WHO CAN GROW UP TO BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT
OR SOMEONE, WE GET TO COACH, TO BECOME THE NEXT MVP. AS FUTURE EDUCATORS, IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND,
EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE, IS IMPERATIVE TO OUR SOCIETY, IN WHICH EDUCATION IS A CRUCIAL DETERMINANT,
OF LIFE CHALLENGES. EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE GOES BEYOND ENSURING THE
RIGHT FOR CHILDREN TO AN EQUITABLE EDUCATION. EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE IS GIVING ALL STUDENTS
A SENSE OF SELF. ESSENTIAL SELF THAT WILL GIVE THEM THE POWER
AND KNOWLEDGE TO SPEAK THE UGLY TRUTH ABOUT OUR SOCIAL, AND POLITICAL SYSTEMS, WITHOUT
BEING AFRAID. EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE, HAS GIVEN ME THE POWER,
TO KNOW ALTHOUGH I CANNOT VOTE I DO HAVE THE ABILITY TO CONVINCE 200 PEOPLE TO VOTE. THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, HAS EQUIPPED
US WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND POWER, NOT ONLY TO CHALLENGE AN OPPRESSIVE SYSTEM, BUT TO
CHANGE IT. PERSONALLY, IT GAVE ME THE NECESSARY TOOLS,
TO ADVOCATE FOR UNDOCUMENTED GRADUATE STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, BY BEING
ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF BEYOND [ INDISCERNIBLE ] BEYOND MISSION IS TO SUPPORT ADVOCATE AND
PRESENT CURRENT FUTURE UNDOCUMENTED GRAD STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON. MET WE HAVE ALL HAD FACULTY, MENTORS STUDENTS
AND COLLEAGUES, WHO HAVE IMPACTED OUR LIVES IN A WAY WE WOULD HAVE NEVER IMAGINED. LET’S ENSURE, WE SHOW OUR APPRECIATION NOT
ONLY TODAY BUT EVERY SINGLE DAY OF OUR LIVES. WITH THIS IN MIND, HUGE SHOUT OUT TO MY LEADERSHIP
IN HIGHER EDUCATION. WE HAVE MADE IT. FINALLY, I WANT TO DEDICATE MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS,
MY BROTHER, I’VE YEAR , WHO UNFORTUNATELY WAS DEPORTED, 10 YEARS AGO. HOWEVER, HE RISKED HIS LIFE TWICE, TO BRING
MY ENTIRE FAMILY AND MYSELF HERE. WITHOUT HIM, I WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN HERE. OF COURSE, THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT GOES TO MY
