China painting Dates back long ago The delicate beauty of feelings on small porcelain objects Is non-standard I am Gu Jing After graduating from Tsinghua I went back to Guizhou and started teaching Chinese painting in university A few years ago, I started painting on porcelain And illustrated for Mr. Dong Qiao’s work He was very satisfied With my illustration Then a rapport is gradually developed Most of the time I paint first And he would finish it with calligraphy Such mutual acknowledgement Is rather rare to be honest I was born in Guizhou And I wasn’t born as a sociable person Instead of going out I prefer staying in and painting I have a small desk On which I spread a piece of paper every morning I quite enjoy doing that Sometimes I would paint for over ten hours in front of the desk Even when I arrived at home late I would sit at the desk By so doing I find peace in my heart I paint cats My cat is an obedient cat It never jumps on to my desk Nor has it ever ruined any of my paintings Around 2013 or 2014 I started posting my works on Weibo As a way of recording my life The cat works Is when public attention kicked in Acquaintances and strangers Sent their cats’ pictures And I chose some proud, cocky, or cold ones to paint Every year I allow myself a few days to do China painting The common impression is that traditional Chinese realistic painting is a careful work That zero mistake is allowed Now if we look at Guo Xi’s “Early Spring” He make quite a few mistakes But he left them uncorrected and made the best of them The man-made imperfection Made it even classier I have a daughter in 2009 And she brought about some change to my works I noticed more details I usually don’t paint on big objects Such as vases And some small brush pots On these teaware I paint cute stuff with taste My plants are inexpensive They are nonetheless good still lifes For sketching They are varied in posture I was an introverted child Painting is a channel through which I maintain contact with the world It’s my cure, my consolation I am protected by it
