Mainers call anywhere that's not Maine "Away," and they have a brutally tribalistic view of them. It's ignorant and backward and keeps them from growing as a culture. 12) Crushingly depressing poverty that will make you want to crawl into a hole and sob upon witnessing it. I feel so bad for little kids being raised here because they are missing out so bad and don't even know it. It's like a cult. Reply Cheyenne Shelton says: September 22, 2019 at 1:38 pm I’m 23 and lived here my whole life. I think Maine actually needs young people to work. We have many businesses close down because they simply can’t find help. I could quite my job and go get three more jobs tomorrow if I show up bathed and in decent clothing. I think if we had a larger working population for more then the tourist season more businesses would stay open year round for locals. Businesses would have workers and towns would have employed people with money to spend. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking 🤷🏻♀️ I live between Ellsworth and Bar Harbor, for location reference. I’d love to hear other opinions/perspectives. Pronounced Bangor wrong, the laws are indeed odd but no-one enforces the Christmas light one. When was the law of ammo not used as currency written? Bud we'll take the shirt off our backs to help anyone! And guess what? I've never seen anyone from any other state pull over to help each other cause They were stuck in the snow. So ya were rough up here isn't for everyone, but we keep to our selves and expect visitors to be respectful of OUR home. Have fun on Oregon please stay there in sure there's lots to do. You can have Christmas lights up year round if you want for one thing Reply Nathaniel Fletcher says: September 28, 2019 at 1:25 am Time to debunk half of these bad boys. I have lived in Maine my whole life. I'm 19 and I don't want to stay here, but not because of any of these reasons. Lets get started: 10: There are two houses near me that leave their Christmas lights up year round. I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble for that and I know a lot of people that keep their light's up for awhile. Who uses bullets as a currency anyway, that's wack. 9: The divorce rate here should not determine whether you should move somewhere. That's just dumb. Our divorce rate is high due to the lack options causing people to settle, simple as that. 8: MAINERS ARE THE NICEST PEOPLE YOU WILL EVER MEET. Our charity rate is low due to the lack of charities around compound with the high poverty rate. We have a lot of poor people (not to be confused with homeless people, we have very few of those) meaning people can't afford to give you money. But Mainers can sit and talk for the longest time and will feed you if you are invited into their home, no doubt about it. 7: I hate seafood. I hate it so much. As a matter of fact I'm allergic to shellfish. I go to the coast quite frequently. I order a burger. Or a steak. Or chicken alfredo. There are other options, to think otherwise is to be ignorant. 6: Winter driving is terrible. I wholeheartedly agree. The black ice and snow is terrible, but if you can drive here, you can drive anywhere. I have also only ever had to dodge deer, squirrels, and pets oh and maybe a mountain lion once, but it may have been a dog. 5: First of all Moxie is not Coke + Root Beer + Sun + Windex. It is Coke with a little bit of motor oil. Moxie is in fact gross, but the guy acts like we don't sell anything else. I've had Moxie once. I don't even think all stores carry it anymore, this one is just dumb. 4: This should be number one. I hate winter. It takes up 1/3 of our year. I also don't drive a 4×4. I drive a '99 VW Beetle. It handles most of the roads fine, we take good care of our roads. The problem is that the salt we use will rust you cars. The snow is bad but if you get yourself a snowmobile you can have some fun. 3: The lack of people is both a reason to move and not to move. It all depends on who you are, this one was a reach. 2: I'm not gonna lie, rent here is in fact awful, but with enough searching you can find a place that you can afford, especially since all the young people are leaving causing a lot of well paying jobs to be left in their wake. Besides, everything else is cheap so it evens out. 1: MAINE IS NOT FOR OLD PEOPLE. Just because there are old people here doesn't mean that it's not for others. There are so many job opportunities here especially if you are looking to work with your hands, we don't have much in the means of creative endeavor but if you can fix a diesel, there is a log truck waiting for you to change out the rear end. Reply Rosen Zahoor says: September 29, 2019 at 9:41 pm That's right, stay away from Maine. Better to move to California, NY, Minnesota and Texas. Reply Rosemary Bunn says: September 29, 2019 at 10:48 pm I moved here and LOVE IT! As for the charity—less financial support because our wages are low; HOWEVER, Maine ranks #7 in the nation for personal volunteer hours. We do for our communities even if we can't financially contribute. We're the volunteer fire fighters, festival organizers, school volunteers, Scout and 4H counselors, shelter cooks, and so much more. Writing checks is easy, donating time takes, well, time. Reply Marc baglieri says: September 30, 2019 at 1:53 am I moved to Maine 17 yrs ago and love it Reply OrneryPossum says: September 30, 2019 at 4:14 pm To all of the older folks in Maine NOT wanting other (younger) people to move there: Eventually, you're going to run out of other people's money (tax dollars). Augusta will raise taxes (again) and you'll keep losing your best and brightest. Maine is a failing giant liberal retirement community and it shows. What few young people that are born in Maine will continue to leave for better opportunities in other States that have jobs that don't include waiting tables or making coffee. The roads and other infrastructure will continue to suffer, more schools will close, and the population will continue to dwindle. The point is you NEED younger people to stay (or move in) because eventually the 40-something's (the average age of Maine) will go into retirement. Maine has the oldest average population in the Union and it's only getting older. More (younger) people employed = more tax dollars = a higher standard of living for everybody. Raising taxes on the few that remain or raising the minumum wage isn't going to fix the problem – you need to stop taxing businesses to death and maybe, just maybe, companies will want to move there. Those that would've otherwise stayed aren't going to willy nilly hand an additional 4% of their income to the State – they're going to move. A higher minimum wage will only mean that the prices of goods will increase to make up for the fact that companies will have to pay their employees more. Either that or they'll go out of business and said employees with their $15/hour wage will be unemployed. I get it – the big bad corporations like Amazon getting a tax break leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but they also bring with them economic prosperity and JOBS! Jobs that don't include bartending at a seaside restaurant for the six months out of the year that it's open. Corporations exist to make money, and they're going to locate where the cost of doing business is most economically feasible. – A Maine millennial that left 15 years ago for better opportunity (and yes, I miss home – but it simply doesn't make sense to give up a six figure income and an additional 4% of whatever income I have left to live there) Reply scott miller says: September 30, 2019 at 7:26 pm i lives in the inbread town of skowhegan Reply ur2ez2011 says: October 1, 2019 at 12:08 am Except Portland. Born and raised here and still havent seen a moose or black bear.. trust me they dont come out that much 🤣🤣 moxie sucks and most of us actually dont drink it, it's the history of it is why we love it. And buddy, Maine is actually a snowbird state.. that means all our old people are only here in the summer when it's hot. It snows between the months of January and March (if it's a good winter) so we do see daylight people. And our roads suck… I mean the condition they are in. They are the worst. Reply stickney43 says: October 1, 2019 at 12:24 pm I currently live in Maine it’s a great place to live I have lived here for 39 yrs. Reply Roxanne Weichinger says: October 12, 2019 at 10:33 am I went to Maine more than once( every time I went there it was during the summer) back in the early 1970’s when I was a kid, and it really is beautiful there! The wide open fields, forests, and rugged coastlines are magnificent! And I loved the old fashioned New England farm houses that were out in the country as well! One time when I was on a summer family vacation in Maine, I remember having to get up early in the morning to use the campsite restroom, and I saw fog rising from a pond( it was always chilly in the mornings!), it was just so picturesque! I saw the same thing when we went to the beach early in the morning, it was always foggy! Then there would be remnants of an old washed out pier off in the distance and made this stretch of coastline look like a ghost beach! The people seemed friendly there, and the seafood was phenomenal!! I think it would be fun to hike Mount Kahtahdin in Baxter State Park Millinocket, Maine, another gorgeous spot! Hopefully Maine will never stop being the wonderful place that it is! PS, Another thing that makes Maine a cool place is that Stephen King is from there, loved reading his spooky books! Reply Alicia Kreisler says: October 12, 2019 at 1:11 pm Yeah Maine is funny af. We are extremely generous and caring so that line about least charitable is BS.
