Good Morning Everyone! I hope you are well, happy and in good health. Today we’ll talk about a topic that interests so many people Which is “Studying in Canada” and we’ll specifically talk about universities about the best and most famous universities in Canada This issue has been raised numerous times on the Facebook group and here on YouTube Today I’ll talk to you about the best universities as well as the best specializations within those universities so that if you are trying to specialize in a particular field, you’d know the specific university where you can study it Let’s start! By far the University of Toronto has been the best and most famous university in Canada for years The University of Toronto was founded in 1827 and English is the primary language of instruction and communication there It includes so many specializations like the Department of Sociology, which is concerned with humanities Faculty of Arts & Science, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering Faculty of Medicine and Medical Sciences, and of course the Department of Computer Science What’s nice about that particular university is how old and prominent it is it actually has the first academic publishing house in Canada and the first Faculty of Forestry which concerns with studying and preserving the forests in Canada and if you didn’t already know, the size (area) of Canadian forests is three times the size of Egypt A great number of trees! There’s also The Center for Critical Development Studies Which has a department for Literature and Critical Theory the university is a pioneer in medical science where the research which lead to the discovery of Insulin (remedy for diabetes) was carried out It’s also a pioneer in stem cell research The main campus lies in the center of town So many tourists come to visit the campus just to see the old buildings of the university University of Toronto has 700 undergraduate programs (degrees) and 200 postgraduate programs such as PhD and Master degrees This university has a huge number of students, approximately 60,000 and 15% of them are international students, which means they are not Canadians nor permanent residents but are actually foreigners who come to study The university is also famous for it’s Business Administration programs and is also famous for its alumni, three of which served as Governor General of Canada, four of which served as Prime Ministers of Canada, another four became presidents in other countries and ten of its alumni received the Nobel Prize. So it’s obviously the best university in Canada Let’s jump to number two on the list which is The University of British Columbia It was established in 1908 in the beautiful city of Vancouver among the trees and the beaches, just picture the beach being only 6 Km away from the university! so you can finish your classes and go surfing! In 2007 the World University Rankings ranked it 13th in the world, which is an excellent spot It has so many departments like the Faculty of Applied science, School of Community and Regional Planning Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Commerce, School of Population and Public Health, School of Law, School of Journalism, School of Nursing and of course schools of Finance, Business and Accounting The student count is approximately 50,000, the quarter of which is international students let’s take a look at the achievements of its alumni firstly, seven of its alumni are Nobel Laureates and 65 of its alumni won gold medals at the Olympics so the university also encourages athletic excellency among the students But I think the biggest achievement of the university is in the Department of Physics The University of British Columbia has the largest cyclotron in the world A cyclotron is an apparatus which accelerates the movement of particles Three of the university’s alumni went on to become Prime Ministers of Canada, including Justin Trudeau He graduated from the Faculty of Education; Yes! Justin Trudeau was a teacher! Moving on to the next on the list, which is the dearest to my heart; McGill University I don’t love it just because it’s the university where I study, but because it really is a great university It’s a beautiful university! It was established in 1821 by a businessman called James McGill It’s in Montreal and it ranks as the 40th, or maybe the 41th, or 42th in the world Among its departments is the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Business Management, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Dentistry, also the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences the language of communication and instruction in McGill University is a mixture of both English and French so some subjects are taught in English and some are taught in French i.e some degrees are in French and some are in English McGill University if famous for teaching management science It has management degrees in almost everything for example, in the field of Health, there’s a masters degree in Management of Drug Manufacturing, a master degree in Management of Medical Establishments and there are management programs for everything else, it’s the “specialty” of the university and that’s why it’s the only institution that represents Canada at The World Economic Forum The university’s main campus is at Mount Royal, it has a wonderful view of the mountain and its buildings are very beautiful and that’s why it’s listed among the most beautiful universities in the world The student population is approximately 40,000, representing 150 different nationalities. There’s also the University of Montreal which is one of four universities in Montreal, Quebec it’s a French-language university that was established in 1878 It includes about 13 faculties and 60 departments the most important one is the Faculty of Engineering because of the research in nuclear energy and optics it also has a Faculty of Architectural Design, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Education Faculty of Music, Faculty of Nursing and there’s also the Department of Theology and Religious Sciences which concerns with comparative religious studies and such it is ranked somewhere between the 100th and 103th among the best universities in the world and although it’s a French-language universities, some subjects are taught in English and that’s a big deal for Québécois (residents of Quebec) to study in English! The student population is around 50,000, the quarter of which is international students and Arab students are mainly from Northern Africa; from Tunisia, Algeria or Morocco like McGill Universities, the buildings of University of Montreal have beautiful designs I’m not aware of anyone famous who graduated from there; but among the alumni, there are ten Premiers of Quebec, which is the head of the province of Quebec Moving along to the west, The University of Alberta was founded in 1908 So it’s relatively “new” compared to the previous universities in our list it ranks in a spot close to The University of Montreal, around 107th in the world But it’s an English-language university since it’s in the province of Alberta, not Quebec it offers programs in multiple disciplines such as Economics, Business Management, Humanities, Art, Engineering, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Health, Medicine, Medical Sciences, and Computer Science What’s peculiar about that university is that it actually attributes to the total income of Alberta but the income of The University of Alberta is approximately 12.3 billion $CAD they cash in so much from students! anyway, this much income represents 5% of the total income of the province Student population is around 40,000, they also represent 150 different nationalities I know so many Egyptians who are enrolled in that university and I think it has a partnership with Al-Ahram Canadian University in Egypt University of Alberta has the first Canadian School of Public Health which concerns with preventing the infection of diseases not curing them but what I find most beautiful about that university is its library which contains 17 million books; enormous amount! Joe Clark who is one of the graduates became the Prime Minster of Canada another graduate, Richard Taylor is a Nobel laureate Next is McMaster University which is in Hamilton, Ontario it was establish by prof. William McMaster in 1887, so it’s quite old! it includes many departments such as Humanities, Art, Economics, Business Management, Engineering, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Health, Medicine and Medical Sciences it also includes a Faculty of Commerce which was established in 1952 Although the number of international students is not very high; as it is around 3800 but that’s not bad compared to the total number of students Then there’s is The University of Waterloo, which was not named after someone called Waterloo! but it was named after the Battle of Waterloo, which was between England and France in 2017 it was ranked 173rd in the world but I’m not sure of its current rating the number of international student enrolled there is 4700 it includes so many disciplines like Engineering, Art, Economics, Business Administration, Humanities, and Technology and so many other departments, the link to which I’ll leave in link in the first comment down below along with links to all the universities mentioned in this video Next is The University of Calgary which was ranked 195th in the world in 2017 the number of international students enrolled is around 5000 it includes disciplines as Business Administration, Economics, Humanities, Art, Engineering, Technology Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Computer Science, Health, Medicine and Medical Sciences Of course I don’t need to say that you would enjoy being at the University of Calgary or the University of Alberta in the summer! I’m not going to tell you that you’d enjoy being there in the winter, since they are in Alberta and all! Next is the Queen’s University, which has such a nice name! imagine a girl saying that she goes to the university of the “queen” by the way, the majority of its students are girls, maybe because of its name in 2007, it was ranked 2nd in Canada it includes disciplines such as Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, Education, Arts, Commerce, Computer Science, Environmental Studies, Law, Urban Planning, Science and Applied Science The Faculty of Commerce in Queen’s University was ranked the 1st of all Faculties of Commerce in the world but is that what I like about Queen’s University! Did any of you notice something? It has a Faculty of Pharmacy! If you haven’t noticed, most of the universities we talked about didn’t have a Faculty of Pharmacy Pharmacy is not a common specialization in Canada Queen’s university ranks somewhere between 200th and 250th in the world It’s an English-language university and it has 3000 international students Then there’s is Simon Fraser University which is fairly unknown to people outside Canada but it’s a good university, it ranks somewhere between 200th and 250th in the world it has around 8000 international students and it includes numerous disciplines such as Science, Arts, Social Sciences, Computer Science Economics, Business Administration, Engineering and Technology Of course there are so many other good universities in Canada like The University of Western Ontario or The University of Sherbrooke and Laval University which I believe are great universities as well The University of Sherbrooke is relatively new, it was established in 1954 and it’s a French-language university, so is Laval University The University of Sherbrooke is known for teaching Medicine and Medical Sciences It has a Faculty of Medicine and a Faculty of Pharmacy so it’s famous for medical research and innovation Laval University is the oldest university in Canada, it was founded in 1663 it has an advanced medical department as well but it includes so many other departments like Regional Planning, Law, Forensic Science, Arts, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Philosophical Studies, Music and Fine Arts, Education, Engineering, Nursing as well as Religious Studies you’ll notice that all the French-language universities such as, The University of Montreal, The University of Sherbrooke and Laval University have a Faculty of Medicine and a Faculty of Religious Studies, since they were all founded by the church and the catholic church of course controlled those two fields, religion and medicine There’s also the University of Saskatchewan which was founded in 1907 It has faculties for Medicine, Nursing, Law, Dentistry and Pharmacy Then there is the University of Ottawa was established in 1848 by the way the capital of Canada is Ottawa, it’s not Toronto nor Montreal it’s not a “big” university but it’s reputable in post-graduate studies it ranks number 5 in post-graduate programs in all of Canada, but not as high in graduate programs it also ranks number 1 in the world in Business Administration Then there’s the University of Victoria which was established in 1963 you will enjoy the weather in Victoria in summer and winter, you can also see Aboubakar Idriss every day! University of Victoria includes a number of faculties for Engineering, Commerce, Education, Arts, Science and Fine Arts A very reputable program (degree) in this university is the Master of Business Administration There are other universities as well such as Acadia University, The University of Manitoba, Brandon University and Memorial University Memorial University has the cheapest tuition in Canada, that is why most international students apply to it first There’s the University of Winnipeg which is in Manitoba regardless of the fact that Winnipeg is the home of the cartoon character “Winnie-the-Pooh” but University of Winnipeg has a special center for economic studies that is very prominent in the world it also includes a Faculty of Asian Studies and a Faculty of German Studies As I’ve told you, there are so many details that I ought to mention about each university but I wanted to give you a general idea about the best universities in Canada and as I said earlier, a link to a video will show up somewhere in the screen to inform you on how to apply to these universities and look for a specific programs and such studying in Canada has a great advantage which is the ability to get a Work Permit after finishing your studies after that you can apply for an immigration visa to settle in Canada which is what most international students do since most of them end up living here unless they came on a scholarship that requires them to get back to their countries after getting the degree Anyway, that was all for today.
